notes

Vocalist Doris Spears comes on like gangbusters with "Evil Gal Blues", then switches gears becoming an even-tempered chanteuse. Her smooth ballad singing hides the textures her opening tune exposes and makes you yearn for more Blues. But she cranks it up again on "Stormy Weather", and a sultry "Day by Day". Sunsh Stein Jazztimes Mag 1999

"Doris Spears is the name. Remember it. Once you hear her, you won't forget the sound, and her powerful, but warm testament of Blues, ballads and whatever else she's more than qualified to musically deliver". Bob Perkins WRTI Jazz Radio/Philadelphia Observer 2000

"Jazz Duchess Spears' honed her vocal skills with some of the brightest legends in Jazz starting with Lionel Hampton and later, on to Houston Person, Jack MacDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Clark Terry, Abby Lincoln, Von Freeman, Ted Curson and others, all a testament to the industry's recognition of her talent". Trenton Times 1997

"Doris Spears and a stiff drink" response to a Philadelphia Inquirer nitelife reporter's question to a Zanzibar Blue jazz patron about whose music makes a great preface to his evening. Philadelphia Inquirer 1999

  • A "must buy" CD!!
    author: Prisca Molotsi

This is truly a superb CD. It starts of with a great, funky rendition of "Evil Gal", then drops into a beautiful ballad "Funny", she swings it on a number I've heard only Betty Carter do, "Jazz ain't nuthin but Soul". A great mixture of blues, ballads and swing numbers. She has a great voice, it's sweet at times yet not cloying, it's bluesy at other times, yet not rough!! FANTASTIC!!!

  • This CD is outstanding
