A World Beat Soul Project. A blackboard jungle; a martini with as many olives as you can spare; a knuckle sandwich. Vocals like a brim low over one eye. Soul like an electric eel skin suit. These are vignettes to groove and kiss and cry to.

Dorian Holley is new to the solo scene. Perhaps because he has spent most of his time backing folks up. The vocal coach on American Idol the last four seasons, he also sings on Don’t Forget The Lyrics, and was a featured vocalist on Dancing With The Stars for its first three seasons. Listen closely and you can pick his voice out on the film Happy Feet. Then go dig up a copy of cult fav, The Five Heartbeats. Dorian is the voice of Choir Boy, which is kind of funny because when he was a kid he WAS one in the world renowned Bob Mitchell Singing Boys Choir. Since then Dorian has done all of Michael Jackson’s solo tours; toured with Rod Stewart, Queen Latifah, James Taylor, Lionel Richie, Don Henley, Linda Rondstadt; sung with Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Usher, Cristina Aguilera, Fantasia, Stevie Nicks, Patti Labelle, Chris Brown, Jon Legend, Chris Daughtry, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Joss Stone, Seal, Chrisette Michele, aw man, the list goes on and on. When you can’t sleep late one night, Google him. That’ll do it.
But you won’t sleep on his music. It’s a World Beat Soul Project. Complimented with the killer poetry of Dorian’s unique take on love, life, holding hands and, of all things, Bar B Q joints.
Dude. This one’s gonna stay on REPEAT. Betchu a hundred bucks. And I’ll double that if you don’t have a laugh or two on the way.

Awesome, what a beautiful voice with so much talent. I will have to listen to the CD another twenty times to chose my favorite, because I loved them all.

Dorian is a real singer. I enjoyed listening to lyrics so masterfully delivered that the picture, the scene, the meaning behinds the words came alive in an all too clear picture within my head. How refreshing to not be robbed of the experience to interpret the music the way I see it in my head. Well Done!!! I look forward to the next project.

What a great cd this is! Not a weak track on it! Besides being an excellent singer Dorian's songwriting is exceptional too. All songs played by real top musicians. If you like Arnold McCuller's solo cd's you have to check this out for sure. (And if don't like Arnold's music you better check it out anyway or you will miss one of the best independent cd's of quite some time!!!)

When we lost Marvin we found Luther. Now that we have lost Luther, we have found Dorian. Light some candles and some incense and get into the hot tub with someone special and give this one a listen. Smooth, sensitive, sultry, seductive and simply sumptuous. Musical, magical, mystical. Listening to it reminds you of a drive up Pacific Coast Highway. Great vocals, tasteful arrangements. My favs are Freeeze and Not Gonna Fall

This man is a true artist. I have had the pleasure of working with Dorian on several occasions. He was my mentor and vocal instructor on American Idol. He taught me so much about music and singing. I personally have been waiting for this record all year. I know you will feel the soul and truth in this record, as it shines out of Dorian effortlessly. He is one of a kind and i just can't wait to see him live!!!

  • What Emory said...
    author: Nayanna

Well, I don't know if I can play my dad's record whilst doing all the stuff Emory suggested, but I damn near rock it for every other occasion! OB-viously this record is sick. Your voice brings me straight to my knees, weeping like I just got voted of ANTM or something. From the conception of many of these tunes on 109th and downtown LA, it makes me smile and feel soooo proud to see what they've become. You're brilliant son! Mad brilliant. I love your voice, your poetry and hope to become even half the songwriter you are. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!

  • "Independent film"
    author: Emory Holmes II

“independent film” introduces American audiences to an artist in the fullness of his brilliance and mastery as a writer and performer. The artist is Dorian Holley, a generous and infecting and original talent who will take you back to the ‘old school’ love jams of Donny Hathaway and Al Green, and into the presence of the sweet, modern masters of slick city pop (Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross) whose legacies he extends and of whose energetic and grace-filled virtuosity he is a worthy exponent and inheritor. “independent film” reveals Dorian Holley as a songwriter/performer of disarming subtlety, seriousness and appeal. And as the title of this collection suggests, “independent film” frames a series of moving sound-portraits, a sweeping audio-visual first-person narrative of the hot (“Never Say Never”) and cold (“Freeze”), the triflin’ (“Ev.Er.Ry Day”), the mystical (“Compassion”), the playful (“Student of Love”) the tragic (“Hit Man”), and the poignant (“Not Gonna Fall”) episodes of loss, aspiration and love that each of us must find a way to contend with and engage every single day of our lives, down here on the ground. Dorian Holley, is an associate musical director for American Idol. Were he a boasting man, his resume could boasts 30 years of achievement, first as a member of the renown Bob Mitchell Singing Boys Choir, when he was a boy; and later, through his many distinguished years as one of the most sought-after studio musicians (vocals; keyboards), working back-up for the most notable performers of our time (Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Little Richard, Usher, Trisha Yearwood, Jon Legend, Mary J. Blige, et al). Now, thank God, Dorian is out front, sassy, humble, sexy, silly, sensuous, generous, sweet. Sharing with us that incomparable voice -- that voice, which is both trained, as well as blessed, with uncommon perfect pitch – a voice that sensually, lovingly, effortlessly and brilliantly invokes the spiritual roots and exuberance of soul in the old school – that art form that is defined as much by the raw passion and physical surrender of its performance style as it is by the mature, world-aware sexuality, emotionalism and good humor of its lyric content and themes. And with that incomparable voice, Dorian makes “independent film” a serious soundtrack for the young-at-heart still in-tune with love’s most ardent memories: with the pleasures of the porch-lit-lip-lock, the slow-dance in yo’ mama’s basement near the spiked punch-bowl, and after all that, after the kissing, the huggin’ and the squeezin’ comes the breathless come-hither tug of bedroom eyes and luscious lips, the perfumed breasts, the sweating chests -- and the dark rooms, as humid as a tropic isle, full of monkey moans, and a farting, funky growl of pain so sweet and sharp and hot the pale moon swimming in your baby’s eyes blushes red and bright as birthday cherry pop. Yes, “independent film” is all that. I play the damn thing every day, to get my groove on right. I suggest you do the same.

This one is new to my collection. I love the way it feels. Smooth, peaceful, soulful colors that are simply magical. I dig the "live" soulfulness. You'll hear something different every time you listen. Wash Me With Water is a favorite. Hauntingly sweet. Thanks for the gift Mr.Holley!
