"Radio Doria", the fourth recording project from singer/songwriter Doria Roberts released November 7, 2000.

PRAISE FOR RADIO DORIA

"Philadelphia-bred, Atlanta-based singer songwriter DORIA ROBERTS' latest CD RADIO DORIA (Hurricane Doria Records) is a solid follow-up to 1999's critically lauded "Restoration." The 14 tracks of this 50-minute disc are filled with Roberts' often outspoken political views and compelling storytelling skills, accompanied by her own aggressive acoustic guitar work and a tight but subtle backing band comprised of bass guitar, drums, and violin."
-- Margaret Coble, Southern Voice

"Not just lamenting, she lays down the truth via her lyrics in a creatively rebellious way. She's got a lot to get off her chest and packs a punch with every song. Is folk music boring? Not the brand being served up here; Doria Roberts is pioneering something you might call "fierce folk" Not in just lyrical content. The rhythm guitar in itself is driving, providing a perfect high performance vehicle to carry her message."
-- TC Krentz, Boston Girl Guide

"Political activist, gay rights activist, women's rights activist, Doria Roberts keeps her plate full of issues. Radio Doria had to be released on her own Hurrican Doria lable because these are issues that keep the majors running. Atlanta should be proud — she is a woman of menas. There is no question that these songs represent an important musical statement that will carry all of us through a ptentitally dark political landscape.
-- Roi Tamlin, Southeast Performer Magazine

"Just a girl and her guitar can sometimes blast above the rowdiest rock. That's the case with Doria Roberts. Her lyrical wisdom and simple strums combine to make for one grooving gig. Roberts' music is both political and emotionally savvy. "
-- Curve Magazine

"The songs on Radio Doria prove she is worthy of a large audience."
-- Jeff Clark, Stomp & Stammer

In early 2000 Roberts decided to remain an independent artist when faced with the opportunity to sign with a major label after performing at Lilith Fair in 1999. She wanted to release a CD that perfectly captured her feelings on the subject of artistic freedom.

While brainstorming after a show Roberts realized her name was an anagram of radio (i.e doria=radio) and that all the songs she had chosen for the CD were topical.

The irony of the discoveries being that most of the songs, because of their subject matter, would probably not be deemed very "radio-friendly".

After watching the first round of Presidential debates, she decided to expand the theme from "artistic" freedom to freedom of thought, speech and action. The eleven songs chosen for "Radio Doria" range in topic and intensity. Along with the lyrics, Doria has included the REASONS why she wrote each song so that her words are not taken out of context and listeners get the full impact of their meaning.

With all that said, it's important to note that "Radio Doria" is a very personal album involving very public issues. And, like her third release "Restoration", it couples infectious melodies and smart guitar work with original and powerful vocal delivery on every track.

Enjoy!

This CD is a great testament to the new folk-punk music. Like Ani DiFranco's earlier accomplishments - Radio Doria is full of raw emotion. She leaves it all for the world to see, and feel. Buy it - You will love it - and want more! Cheers to Doria. She is brilliant!

  • Great!

I loved this CD. There is so much vocal variety in the songs and the messages are strong and meaningful. In the world's current state of affairs, this CD is powerful in its condemnation of injustice. Thanks Doria!

The songs on "Radio Doria" prove that Doria Roberts is worthy of a large audience much like the Indigo Girls have accomplished. -Jeff Clark
