notes
d.o.n. stands for determination overcomes negativity. I would like to think that I'm not what folks are used to being from New Orleans, or from the current crop of artists that originate from down south. I'm not here to change the game, or to "lock down the block", or make anyone feel like less of a person after having listened to the music. My goal is to make quality hip hop music that enlightens, entertains, and informs, and most importantly last. I feel that my style is descriptive, with adept and capable wordplay, and boasts an extensive range of topics, without being too simple or overly cryptic. The Basics is my third album, and I feel does not lean toward the status quo in hip hop today, but rather set's the bar for quality rap music higher than it's contemporaries. I just hope that people who hear it, enjoy it. Peace. Be on watch for my EP The WARningZ coming soon.

"Capable wordplay" is putting it lightly this is the hot shtuff!
author: John Book, Music For AmericaD.O.N. is from New Orleans, and on his CD The Basics (self released), he greets the day with a refreshing "good morning" before he steps out of the house in order to take on the tasks of living. In "Man-E-Faces" he talks about the versatility he not only wants to add to his brand of music, but versatility in hip-hop as a whole and the versatility people can reveal to the world if they allow themselves to. In "Illustrious", D.O.N. offers up what he calls "capable wordplay" but this guy is beyond capable, he is very sure of how to flow, how to rhyme, how to write, and to execute it in a fashion that will make people become immediate fans of his work. He also touches on his spirituality and faith a number of times, more evident in "Hallelujah", a track that is radio friendly enough to open him to a wider audience. In fact most (if not all) of the songs here are radio friendly, but that shouldn't read as it being "weak" or watered down. Production-wise, he does all of his own tracks so you are able to hear him create his own path in his own way, and it reminds me of hip-hop circa 1994-1997, when it was still about mixing up the familiar with the painfully obscure. It's painful because the producer in you wants to know that sample, but it's so funky that you can't help but smile and just nod your head in honor of the D.O.N. He calls what he does "quality rap music", and it's rare for someone today to go back to that essence of what it was still just rap without hesitation. He's from New Orleans, but comes off sounding like he's from L.A. circa 1992, from the days of the Freestyle Fellowship or The Pharcyde. I like how when you hear his music, you envision the tales and the "capable wordplay" at work. This is the hot shtuff.
Do NOT underestimate d.o.n.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
author: DonavanI have been a fan of hip-hop my whole life, and am quite confident in my "ear" for good music. Don has that type of voice and rhymes that makes the whole album a smooth journey. It is never choppy, and the only disappointment remaining is that idle feeling of the album ending. The other great thing about Don (music and character) is that he is very humble, and the first to admit that he is an amateur. The Basic's seems like a metaphor, encompassing all of the latter, especially since it is his first album. It makes the whole listening experience completely worthwhile and 10 times more enjoyable. NOTE: Pay attention the ode to his father. Amazing.
