When Donovan's Brain assembled to record what would become their fifth album, it was decided to try a more organic approach to making music. Song were rehearsed in the studio, with all four members contributing to the arrangements.

A Defeat Of Echoes is the fifth musical offering from Donovan’s Brain, and their second for Career Records.

-Once again Donovan’s Brain has defied attempts to fit them into any of the neat modern categories. The sounds range from precise guitar rockers, Elizabethan folk-rock, deep social commentary, politics of the heart, and West Coast guitar architecture. The four multi-instrumentalists who created A Defeat Of Echoes do not recognize any boundaries.

-Upon the completion of their Career Records debut, The Great Leap Forward, the four members of Donovan’s Brain, Jeff Arntsen, Ron Craighead, Colter Langan, and Ronald Sanchez were sure they had created something special. Even before it’s release, Donovan’s Brain had returned to the studio to begin work on this new album.

- When Donovan’s Brain began rehearsing the new material for A Defeat Of Echoes, the self-imposed directive was that all the songs could be played live. The sparse, yet complex arrangements were the results of hours of studio experiments. The two band compositions emerged from these brainstorming sessions.

- Donovan’s Brain were again assisted in the studio by Career Records label head, Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) on guitar, Richard Treece (Help Yourself, Green Ray) on guitar, Megan Pickerel (Swoon 23, Jessamine) adding her distinctive voice, and power-pop legend Bobby Sutliff (The Windbreakers) on guitar and vocals.

- In the spring of 2004, Donovan’s Brain joined label mates Roy Loney And The Longshots (Drunkard In The Think Tank - 2004) and Australian Penny Ikinger (Electra - 2003) for the Career Mini-Van Of Stars Tour. In the tradition of the Motown and Stax-Volt Package Tours, Donovan’s Brain served as the house band, playing their own set and then backing Penny. Donovan’s Brain also found time to return to the studio with Angie Pepper (Res Ipsa Loquitor - 2003) to cut four songs for her next album.

- To recreate a “double album” in the digital age, the thirteen new original songs are divided into four discreet “sides”. Each member wrote a short instrumental that was used to mark the breaks in the program.

- A Career Records DVD accompanies A Defeat Of Echoes. Keith Lockwood filmed a Donovan’s Brain-Penny Ikinger concert for documentary about independent radio. The Brain footage was matched with an alternate version of the song Control to create the band’s first video.
