notes
Donna Tucker is truly a jazz singer's singer. She loves lyrics, makes each melody her own and, most of all, she allows you to feel the emotion in each song.
The late Frank Mantooth described Donna as "...a divine voice, sophisticated elegance...great to work with...wonderful to know..."
Sitting along side the stage, one immediately feels an enchantment of a truly remarkable artist. Tucker exudes a glamorous presence, a remarkable sense of musical stylizing, as well as a deep emotional interpretation of a song. Not only is she a remarkable stylist...check out her original songs "Won't Know 'til I Get There" and "I Like It Like That"...she's a gifted writer as well.
Along with Donna's superior musicianship and writing ability, "RIGHT AS THE RAIN" was made possible by some of the most gifted musicians in the country based in Kansas City. The unique arrangements/piano style by Leslie Maclean....the greatly talented and highly recognized Bob Bowman on bass, as well as Craig Akin, another great bass player. On saxophone and flute, Kim Park, one of jazz's incomparable talents and bring to the mix,the ever impressive Danny Embrey on guitar...add Bill Harshbarger playing his dynamic twists on clarinet... bring to this circle of elite musicians, Jerry Pollock's innate ability and talent on drums...a truly great sound.
Ms. Tucker's career has taken her from a classical pianist...yes, an accomplished oboist...a jingle singer, a university artist-in-resident... to on-camera talent in commercial television... to a photographer's dream...but, never did she stray from her passion as a jazz vocalist. Not only is she in great demand here at home...Japan became "home" to Tucker for 7 years while appearing at the Westin Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo TV descibed her as a favorite of guests visiting the hotel. Donna never fails to say, "My voice and my songs are who I am and I am thrilled to think that I have created a fan base around the world."
Donna Tucker has the ability to "live" a song and take you along on her journey...always wanting "just one more..."
"Tight charts, tasty selections, and the laid back, self-assured lower register of Donna Tucker introduces this new (to me) jazz singer via "Donna Tucker -Right as the Rain", her latest CD....sung most convincingly by an emotional, lyrical...Tucker....I hope I'll have the opportunity to hear Donna....in person sometime soon. She phrases really well, has a good sense of how to play with the rhythm(s), and emerges with her own style and sound. It's always a good sign when someone asks you, "Who does she remind you of?"...and you can't think of an answer. A very good sign."
-CAROL COMER, JAM MAGAZINE KANSAS CITY
"RIGHT AS THE RAIN" is an example of a first class production with an exceptional selection of songs the world will want to hear again and again...
Kansas City has become a second home for Tucker. Be sure to look for her at Jardine's...as well as the Blue Room in the Jazz District. You can find her with a big band as well as a trio....she's enchanting.

author: Mike LanningOnly in the past 5 or 6 years have I learned to appreciate Jazz. Starting with Diane Schuur and then moving on through various other artists and finally a friend at work told me about hearing Donna and I checked her out on her website. I liked what I heard and so I ordered the CD. What can I say but WOW! As much as I love Diane Schuur, Diana Krall and others, Donna went straight to the top for me. Magnificent voice, perfect timing, great soul, amazing song selection and wonderful musicians. I was completely and totally thrilled. I guess the other times I have been this excited about an artist were 1956 when I first heard Elvis sing "Heartbreak Hotel", 1963 when I first saw John Gary on the Garry Moore show and when I first saw Linda Eder on "Star Search". I cannot wait for the opportunity to see Donna perform live.
Which to choose..
author: Tracy Cassidy, B98fmI join those who rave about this album, it's been in my cd player since the day I got it, and I ordered it before it was released. To know such a voice from so near.. what a blessing. Donna, I have been waiting to get a back injury and surgery recovered enough to sit long enough to come and see you in person.. and I think I'm THERE. .. So, now I'm looking for new schedules.. To hear you in person will be a treat. Tracy
Awsome voice, excellent musicians
author: Daniel GouinExcellent album! A very mature and well controlled voice. Excellent quality and professionally sounding. I hate to make comparisons, but I have too - she reminds me of Holly Cole, one of my favorite female jazz singer of all time. WOW!
DT is a distinctive piano player and a distinctive singer.
author: John GreenyaToo many chick singers (sorry about that) put out CDs with tracks that sound too much alike. Not so here. "Right as the Rain" is right on. Song selection is an intelligent mix of tunes and tempos, but what sets RATR apart is the twin pleasures of Donna Tucker's singing and piano playing. Add to that the refreshing fact that she doesn't sound "like" someone else. This artist has her own very distinctive voice -- see in particular "So Many Stars" and the title tune, but pay close attention to tracks 7 and 13 ("Won't Know Till I Get There" and "I Like It Like That") both of which are Tucker originals. Great artist, great CD.
Awesome! We love you Donna!
author: Eric BoltzDonna, thank you for doing this disk. To those who are thinking about buying this disk, Donna is a gem both as a performer and a clinician at a summer camp that I have attended.

Elegant and natural, this is a jazz vocalist with the perfect kind of presence for this timeless brand of music. With a voice that is undeniably confident and mature, she effortlessly breathes new life into this classic collection of songs that can be enjoyed over and over. The same can be said for the arrangements and her backing band, who take some real chances with some well known numbers but pull them off with class and pizazz. "Summertime," a song often known for its serenity and lilting waves of emotion, is given the upbeat treatment here, flirting with aspects of bebop but still maintaining the heartfelt intentions of the original composition. This approach flows throughout the album, and it works as a direct reflection of an entertainer and artist who isn't afraid to up the ante a bit, pushing these tunes to the brink and really making them her own. Her phenomenal backing band makes it all possible, sinking deep into the pocket of these modern arrangements and really adding a flow and mystique to the proceedings. If you're looking for a diverse selection of songs, enchanting vocals, and some top notch playing, you'll want to make this sophisticated jazz vocal performance a part of your collection.
Every lover of standard jazz music will love this CD
author: RM Myers--Drummer, singer, percussionist, composerI've always found that the one true way to rate a CD is by how much you enjoy it after the 50th time you have heard it. Most CDS that I buy just wind up on the shelf and start gathering dust. Not this one. I have listened to Donna's CD many times, and it gets better every time I hear it. The sound is SO smooth and good and well balanced and the arrangements are unique and leave you wanting to listen to it again and again. Please buy this CD. You will never regret it!
A sultry golden sound that surrounds you like a sunrise---
author: Larry Hatteberg - KAKE TVThe question you ask is why haven't I heard more from Donna Tucker? Her sound and jazz styling compliment each song and adds a depth that few professionals can master. Smooth, sultry and stunning, she has a sound that you'll put at the head of your 'play' list. It is an album that will make you an 'instant' fan. Encore! Encore!
I absolutely loved it!!
author: Scott GrasslI feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to enjoy this CD. Not only does she have incredible talent, Donna sings with her heart. And, as she taught me, that makes all the difference. I love it when good things happen to GREAT people. Buy it....I promise you won't be disappointed. I bought two, myself!
Great, some old & some original songs. A super talent!!!
author: Gayle DyeDonna is a great jazz stylist. This CD has many old, great titles, with a new spin on the arrangments. A couple of the titles are new to me, but are sure to be hits. It is really a pleasure to hear music that you can understand and enjoy.
Finally - after hearing her life for many years in Japan - now on CD
author: Gerhard R. E. SchmidtThis CD is really great, of course even better if you know the artist and heard her life - smooth, sophisticated and right to your heart - a must
Buy it!
author: ssmarshGreat CD-- Donna brings a mesmerizing voice to standards, and throws in a few surprises too. Any jazz lover needs this one! Watch for her when she's live in KC, too.
Donna is one of a kind, first rate, a joy to hear.
author: Barry Gaston KMUW RadioDonna Tucker is truly a great entertainer, and a world class talent. It's hard to beleive this is her first album. I've had the chance to hear her in person, she is is just as outstanding, in person as she is on her CD. Donna is one of those singers that make each song her own. So what's wrong with her? Only that she only has one album. Check out the title track and you'll be hooked.
