notes
This is the video shot at Martyr's in Chicago on May 16th-7th 2006---the show from which 'The Sole Inhabitant' CD audio was taken. You may have seen several of these songs in podcast form at www.thomasdolby.com. Some people say this video footage is even better than the Berklee School of Music footage featured on 'The Sole Inhabitant' DVD. It's different, that's for sure. Whereas the Berklee show was very nicely shot and edited on high-end gear, this video was edited by Johnny Dekam from his minicams dotted around the keyboard rig (and on Thomas' head!) and is distinctively 'noir', almost Frank Miller-like in its look and feel. So Thomas decided to make it available as a DVD. Now, as many people have already bought TSI DVD, CD or both, and given that the podcasts are free, it seems crazy to ask you to pay top dollar for this item, hence the low price. As a special bonus track, in addition to the regular eleven, there's a live recording of 'Airwaves' featuring an ambient video mix by Johnny Dekam; this version will not be available in any other form.
[NOTE: if you already own 'The Sole Inhabitant' CD, then you already have the audio for tracks 1-11. What this disc gives you is the video of the same performances, plus the bonus track 'Airwaves.']

Never have so many...had it so good!!
author: BuddhaboiI got this excellent concert dvd the other month & am only getting round to scribble these few lines now because i have seriously been watching this gig over & over @ every available opportunity. Thomas Dolby is an electronic legend & this beautifully crafted dvd is testament to a genuis. I luv how its been shot & the use of the old film material just adds that extra bit that engages & mesmerizes! This is outstanding value for money! Hats off 2 CD Baby 4 their prompt reply to me also as i;m based in the UK & needed 2 know if the dvd was compatible here...which it is ;) Mr Dolby is working on a new studio album which i can't wait 4. This dvd has fuelled my interest in him. His recent mix of Radioheads last single was awesome & got many votes. I will, on the strength of this dvd - be purchasing The Sole Inhabitant! Do urself a favor & get this amazing concert dvd ;)
If I could give this 100 stars, I would!!!
author: Peter FirthI loved every single second of this DVD..... being a huge fan in the 80's, I can honestly say, like wine, Mr. Dolby just gets better by age. This DVD is something no fan, casual to devoted, should miss or be without!!! Can't wait for the new music, Thomas!!
Awesome
author: Bill HeatonI just downloaded this from I tunes and it is amazing. I saw Thomas Dolby for the Flat Earth tour Front row here in Tempe AZ in the 80's and have been a fan since. This brought back some great memories.
new wave bliss
author: Thomas F Ellis IIIBelieve everything you read -- this dvd is fanstastic. I saw this tour in Seattle, and the show was one of my favorite concerts ever. It's great to have a document of Dolby's triumphant return. Musically and vocally, he is spot-on.
Pure Entertainment
author: Richard AveryMr. Dolby's talent never ceases to amaze me. A brilliant performance.
Thomas Dolby Live In Chicago DVD
author: GummyGreat one man show live. Not an accoustic 'unplugged' type concert. Can't beat the low low price! A must for any fan.
Great DVD!!!!
author: Joseph DellIt's so great to listen to an artist who after all these years can sing and sound the same he did years ago. Truly an amazing artist. Can't wait to see him at the next tour in NY
Great 80's musician !
author: ROUX GAELVery nice live tour ! Thomas Dolby is not very know in France, but I know some of songs like "WINDPOWER" or "SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE"... Hope to see him in Paris in 2008 ? All the best, Gaël

Please please please !!!! Come to Belgium !!! Thanks thanks thanks.
Yeah, baby!
author: JeremyJust wonderful. The music is fantastic (obviously!!!!) but it's the way the man layers each song live on stage that makes each performance truly unique. A must not just for any Dobly fan, but for anyone interested in current music technology in action.

Totally superb dvd a must buy for any true dolby fan
- author: Pete Willis
The dvd is without a doubt superb it captures Dolby at his finest!!! The sheer skill it takes to build up the tracks is evident on every section and well worth the money for that reason alone I would recommend this dvd to anyone
Excellent performance of Dolby's comeback tour. Enjoy!
author: J. CadigalThe DVD is of the Chicago venue of Dolby's Sole Inhabitant Tour. Compared to the earlier one from Boston (which I also bought), it is shorter and more polished. The DVD has the extra track (Airwaves), which is a must for any Dolby fan. Another enjoyable performance.
Excellent performance
author: Doug NanceI have enjoyed this DVD vey much since I received it. TMDR staged an excellent performance, and the recording quality is first rate. I think the sound is superb, and the video is moving. I really got caught up in the music as well as in the visuals.
the sum of the parts
author: carbonThis DVD should complete the Dolby legacy in anybody's collection. Familiar tunes, that you may have carried with you for years, are given a final re-interpretation by the artist himself with a visual backdrop that updates his use of projections from the earlier tours in his career. Personally, I found this DVD superior to 'The Sole Inhabitant' DVD, but both are a suitable way to 'tie up' any loose ends left. PS. The inclusion of Airwaves on this DVD makes it invaluable to any fan.
Please come to Japan, Dolby!!
author: Asushi ONOGreat!!
I was glued to the screen!
author: Ben BiddleKnowing every song by heart I heard both the familiar and new twists that Mr Dolby chose to produce in his live show. Any fan will certainly enjoy seeing the song assembly process as he creates new loops on the fly and brings up favorite old samples that put his stamp on those venerable compositions. His head-cam offers the viewer a perspective that few get to experience. A must-see for any Thomas Dolby listener!
Dolby on Stage awesome like always
author: Thorsten HeinzeI was really looking forward to this Live DVD and Thomas Dolby doesn't disappoint, this artistic vision on stage with the video wall and thomas on stage performance capture the viewer instantly, the sound quality is crisp and the music rocks. I just can advise you to check it out, one of the better concert dvd's around. Thor
Just like being there...on stage, or off
author: Bowling in New OrleansI was there, and the show was terrific. This DVD, without a doubt, succeeds in capturing that experience. Often concert videos become monotonous to watch, so that you might as well just listen to the live CD. However, this DVD captures the entire performance exceptionally well and is always visually entertaining. Also, as a musician, I appreciated the use of Dolby's headcam to observe the technical aspects of his performance.
Thomas is Timelss
author: A Noted ScientistAfter Seeing his latest round of shows in Los Angeles, this was a joy to revisit his line-up. He does most songs justice, but really shines with Leipzig and Budapest.
Buy It Even If You Already Have The Other DVD
author: ThomasThe description at the top of the page is spot on. This is definitely different enough from the other DVD to warrant a purchase. The reverse holds true. Buy 'em both! I liked the performances on this DVD better, but the other DVD has TMDR explaining each song's origins before each performance.
Great for the completist
author: JenA great addition to my Thomas Dolby archive, it was really fun to watch the concert footage and sing along. Definitely funky visuals, got a real sense of what it must have been like to be there.
best of his talents, eclectic mix of songs
author: howard schumacherTom Dolby took a break, and now he's back. Though some of these songs are not his most popular, he performs those that allow him to showcase his talent as a singer, song writer, engineer, and on-stage talent. He sequences the material for us in real time. His performance is retro, but he shakes it up with edgy modern variations. This work could easily win him a larger following.
Pretty cool stuff.
author: 80sGeekGreat gift for the Dolby collector. The new version of Airwaves is really cool. I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but it's still worth getting the CD for that track alone.
I'm back at Martyr's
author: Peter NeubertIndeed – it feels like I am back at Dolby's performance at Martyr's in Chicago in May '06! The camera angle from the back of the audience is eerily similar to the vantage point I had at the concert I attended. Excellent visuals combining stage, headpiece and video shots complement the audio. Great to see the master at work from close-up angles!
A solo show not to be missed!
author: BeechwoodAveAs opposed to the Sole Inhabitant Tour DVD released late last year, this set from that same tour, recorded at Martyrs in Chicago, is a very intimate performance, with the audience right up close. That, plus Johnny Dekam's visual capturing of the show, makes for a very personal kind of experience. The musical performances are better than the other DVD, and the bonus of a live "Airwaves" at the end (recorded in Austin, TX) makes this a must-have for the Dolby-phile. Great re-imaginings of his best tunes from earlier in his career!
5 stars PLUS!
author: James MillerThis is the audio fans were looking for the first time around! CD BABY rocked again, this being our 2nd or 3rd purchase from them and they got our shipment cross country in only two days! Thank you, Thomas for keeping the price down on this one for those who had purchased the other DVD. Thanks again, Thomas and CD BABY! You both rock!
A Triumphant Return
author: CHINASKIThomas Dolby has always been able to project warm, emotional songs against a genre of music that is often cold and aloof. This tour marks the return of one of my all-time favorite songwriters after a 12-year absence. Dolby performs stripped-down versions of some of his best work using an array of state-of-the-art, classic, and homegrown MIDI controllers. Highlights include surprisingly moving performances of "Leipzig" and "Flying North", plus a personal favorite of mine, "The Flat Earth".
It's just like being there!!
author: FrankHaving seen Thomas in March 2007, this DVD is as I remember the show. An evening of great music in a small venue with wonderful visuals being projected onto a screen. "Airwaves" was the closer that night and it blew me away. The laid-back version on this DVD is worth the price of it on it's own. This is a must have for those Thomas Dolby fans that want to revisit the live show or experience it if you did not get to see him on his tour.
The main reason you SHOULD buy this DVD is...
author: Robert Wright...because it doesn't sound like the other Sole Inhabitant dvd. On that original release, the performances are great as ever, and the video editing is fab, etc., but the sound is rather dismal, apparently taken from the ambient sound in the venues instead of being mostly from the sound mixer, which is truly a shame. (It's bad enough to convince me the wrong audio track was selected for mass duplication accidentally.) When I've wanted to show people how amazing these performances were, I've had to sync the DVD's picture up to the audio of the CD. Not anymore! The audio to the podcasts sounded incredible, and I'm so excited to get my hands on this DVD so I can have hi-rez audio and sync'd video for this amazing show!
