notes

Born and raised just thirty minutes from Indiana's own rock legend John Mellencamp, David has been surrounded by music for his entire life. Listening to everything from Bach to ZZ Top as a young boy, the now eighteen-year-old singer and songwriter picked up a guitar at the age of thirteen and has been writing music relentlessly ever since.

After playing with a band in Columbus, Indiana for two years called Trial and Error and performing with talented musicians, such as Chris Shaffer from the Why Store, David is now taking his solo act on the road in support of his first self-released album "Where I Belong."

David's ability to howl in a deep, sandpapery growl one minute and sing in an angelic, ballad-style voice the next leaves crowds begging for more. One of the funniest and most talented acoustic artists out there, David likes to use his performances to everyone's advantage, benefiting such organizations as the United Way and the Turning Point Shelter for Battered Women.

"Where I Belong" is comparable to Ben Harper's Live from Mars acoustic disc, but what sets David apart from anyone else in the music biz is his poetic writing style. Throughout the album, you can hear the lyrical genius of a writer who admits that what drives his music is that he "certainly doesn't have everything figured out just yet." Put this album in your CD player, and you will be amazed that this artist just graduated high school!

From the title track love song to the jam of "The Legend of Jack Kerouac," this record has something for every fan of acoustic music to enjoy. Check out the website for more info and concert dates.

Every word has so much meaning in its context. I expect to see this guy blowing up soon!

  • A great artist and a good guy.

This CD is a must, and if you get a chance to see him live, it is an even greater must. Everytime he plays around my area I go to see him. He is a great guy, and his music is great too. I own both of his CD's and more, and I love every single song he made, and still makes.

  • My favorite new artist!

This CD is a phenomenal start for Dave McMillin. I first heard portions of the CD on WGRE-FM, and fell in love with his acoustics and lyrics about things close to a college kid's heart. Not only does the CD showcase his writing ability, but also his exceptional playing and sound. I can't get enough of it!

  • Pleasant surprise
    author: Jennifer

This is the first CD I have heard from David McMillin, and I was very impressed and even more surpised to learn that he is still in high school. This CD and its lyrics is not just applicable to high schoolers! His voice has scratchy sound to it, but with the lyrics and melodies of the songs on this track, it works perfectly. With just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, and the upbeat tempos it a great CD for driving to or listening while hanging out with friends. I have found that this CD is perfect to have playing in the background while I am writing and doing work. My only complaint is I wish that there was a little more variety of melodies on the CD, the first three tracks sound very similar to one another.

  • Beautiful, Enchanting Songwriting
    author: Discovering Artists

10.14.03 David McMillin: Where I Belong His songwriting is beautiful and enchanting throughout this collection of acoustic jams. McMillin explores reality in "Lifetimes and Yesterdays" when he sings, "Lifetimes, yesterdays/Dreams all dreampt before/Now those dreams have to live in evermore." Ranging from topics of love to spirituality, McMillin's verses are heartfelt and complex, always honest. Vocally, he's got somewhat of a bluesy, gruff voice. If you like Edwin McCain, you will probably enjoy this vibrant assortment of intertwining acoustics. Favorite Tracks: Lifetimes and Yesterdays, May Your Sun Always Rise Rating: 3.5 stars

I like the music it is really good for someone who has only been playing five or six years. I like the way I can relate to the music. Keeping it easy for the listener to undersand is not always easy... especially if you are a deep thinker. I can't wait to hear more!

  • This guy rocks...
    author: Stu Smith

I may be biased, but I think that this album is a big step for a high school senior, and in the past year since its release, David's music has only gotten better. His live shows are awesome and his next album is going to be great.

  • Best young musician in Indiana
    author: Scott Johnson

This CD is a huge step from his last release. His vocals and songwriting improved greatly and I'm glad I got to see him develop his music along the way. Way to go Dave

  • Great acoustic album
    author: WGRE-FM

WGRE added David's album and has gotten excellent response. Although he takes the singer-songwriter approach to his music, there is a certain distinct style that makes it his own. We love and reccomend it!

  • Pre-Highway 61 Dylan meets Springsteen's Nebraska meets Columbus, Indiana

A great CD from a great guy. Hopefully I'll still get thank you cards when I come to his concerts in 10 years. Regardless, Where I Belong is a musically solid album with some fantastic lyrics. Combined with his unique voice and some carefully crafted music the album becomes one of the best all acoustic CDs I've ever heard. My personal favorite song on the album, 'The Legend of Jack Kerouac', packs about as much good old fashioned rock n' roll as you can into a one man one guitar performance. Great work, and I look forward to hearing more in the future.

  • Glorybound :)

This CD is comprised of fourteen songs that feature an amazing acoustic sound and an even more amazing voice. The future of this aspiring new musician is undoubtedly heading for the stars, and like the rest of his fans I love seeing David's hard work pay off. The music is full of passion and heart, and this CD should most definitely be an addition to the collection of everyone who appreciates great music. To the artist- Keep following your dreams and listening to your heart.

  • The next Dave Matthews
    author: Holly Ann

Where I Belong...this CD encompasses everything a high school student or young adult will face; life, love, death, and self discovery. David's lyrics are soul based and true. It's one of those CD's you can listen to over and over...and over again, and not get sick of it! David you did a great job-best of luck in the future!*

  • Impressed
    author: Lindsey Stickans

It's hard to keep this review short, to keep it about the cd, and not to talk about the artist. David is a great musician, song writer, and an all around great person. His cd definitely reflects his outstanding musical talents and love of the art. Where I belong is a cd that adequately touches the many aspects of adolescence, high school, and fitting in. The lyrics culminate the experiences of growing up: hardships, over-coming obstacles, and love. It's a cd that all teens should add to their collection. It's bound to make an impression. Thanks David, I've truly enjoyed your music! Good Luck and Best Wishes- Lindsey
