notes
Expelled from classical piano lessons at age 14, (for playing boogie-woogie), D. K. Stewart was given an early opportunity to develop his own piano style. The result of his departure from tradition was the discovery of Jazz and Blues. This unusual pursuit at such a young age afforded D.K. the opportunity to meet and perform with a multitude of living blues legends; Big Walter Horton & S.P. Leary, Hubert Sumlin & Sunnyland Slim, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, James Cotton, Willie Dixon & the All Stars, Albert Collins, Sunnyland Slim, Sonny Terry & Browny Magee, Junior Walker, Clifton Chenier, Ray Charles, Paul Butterfield, George "Harmonica" Smith and BB King.
Remaining behind the scenes in most of his bands, Stewart began his stage career by writing and performing with the "NightHawks Band" out of Eugene, Oregon. This was the group that inspired the creation of John Belushi's "Blues Brothers", and later became the hardy force of road warriors that introduced Robert Cray to the west coast during the late 70's.
Producing and performing with NW giants Curtis Salgado, Robert Cray, Jim Mesi, and Paul deLay, Stewart inevitably put his savvy stage expertise to work for himself in 1985 by creating the "D.K. Stewart Trio". This effort produced his first solo project "The Sun Valley Sessions"(CR33-07), released in 1988, followed by "No Excuse for the Blues" (CR33-16), released in 1992. This last release of his third solo project "Don't Call Home" (CR-CD010) and induction into the "Muddy Hall Of Fame" by the Cascade Blues Association, has vaulted D.K. into the top echelon of the Northwest's finest performers.
Mr. Stewart performs regularly throughout the Northwest. His band consists of piano, guitar, bass and drums, occasionally augmented by a two or three piece horn section. The music is strong, metered blues with a definitive dance beat. Stewart's vocal work is a fine tribute to Chicago-style blues singing combined with a little New Orleans soul. This mixture of spicy "Barrelhouse" piano and hard driving southern rhythm, always produces a performance that's hard to forget and easy to dance to.
The man is a powerhouse, the music is authentic, the show is dynamic and the time is now! Get to out see this northwest blues legend at your earliest opportunity, just to soothe your soul.

Rock & roll/blues/New Orleans jazz/all-around fun CD
author: Jaynie Yeager LehmanI was a big fan of the Paul deLay Band in the early '80s (when Dave and Don were in the band) and saw the group often in Southern Oregon. I was pleased to recently discover DK4 and just had to get this CD. I wasn't disappointed! Some of the songs are reminiscent of the band I knew way back when, but they definitely have a new and distinct sound. I really liked the variety of sounds and styles (some bluesy, some rock and roll, some hard to classify). And I loved the artwork on the CD cover (by Dave's son maybe?)!
Energizing blues with a funky backbeat.
author: Annette OrbanI dare you to stay in your chair! This CD transported me out of my seat and down to the Waterfront Blues Festival. The groove just grabs you.

Talent, energy and fun create a work of art.
author: Marla in TacomaA memorable CD that’s a whole lot of fun. Impossible to sit still to this one. Each musician is extremely talented and they shine on this CD. Every selection is cleverly arranged and they play with amazing energy and confidence. The result is a work of art. My gratitude to the Washington Blues Society Bluesletter review that convinced me to purchase it.
Swing 'em round, dance 'em down, & lock 'em up!!!!
author: The Original SnakeboyI grew up in New Orleans, and when it comes to that nasty, funky, groove 'till you drop dance thang, how could it get much better than this !!!! This CD, actually recorded "in the house" in Portland, really represents what these boys are all about. Ain't no studio tricks here, these fellas can play....YEAH, YOU RIGHT !! I say they're so bad, they should be in detention !!! Lock 'em up !!!
This is the one!
author: Dodson WarrendaleI'd heard rumors of this new CD. It's unbelievably great. Raw and stripped down. No fancy overdubs or tricks. DK covers a lot of New Orleans stuff, but is also a master of straight-ahead Chicago blues. He has to be one of the best blues piano players on the scene. And the band is killer. Great grooves. This band swings hard. I love this record. Best yet.
