Jim DiSpirito has been playing the drums for as long as he can remember. He kept a steady course on the drums, studying music in the US at the Berklee College of Music and Indiana University of PA. He then studied overseas, including tutelage in India (tabla drumming) as a student of Ustad Zakir Hussain & Nishikant Barodekar.

He is a three-time Emmy Award nominee for his music for television, and has composed music for independent and IMAX films. Jim has also received a 2005 Telly Award for music composition.

As the percussionist for Rusted Root (1993-2001), Jim helped define the great rhythm-based sound that would propel the band to gold and multi-platinum sales.

Since exiting the band Jim has completed work on the project "big SILENCE", his debut CD, which incorporates the world-beat and American pop sounds.

Jim's wife, singer songwriter Carol Lee Espy, co-wrote, co-produced and performed on Big Silence. Other great players on the project include Dave Brown & Eric Reibling (The Gathering Field), Dwayne Dolphin (Geri Allen, Wallace Roney, Don Byron, Oliver Lake), Lindsey Horner (Bill Frisell, Tommy Flanagan, Joey Baron, Dave Douglas), Pete Freeman and Dave Hanner (Corbin/Hanner Band) ... plus many other wonderful musicians.

"big SILENCE" has drums, percussion, rock & bluegrass ... never, never boring.

Let "big SILENCE" be the soundtrack for your road trip.

This CD fills the silence with awesome rhythms, amazing and interesting vocals and wonderful surprises! It is so versatile and really highlights the incredible talent of these musicians. The words that come to mind are "real"... and "unique"! I have played my copy again and again and find something new to enjoy every time! Thank you!

Jim's solo cd is everything that's missing from Rusted Root's sound today. You're doing yourself a great dissservice by not owning this work of art.

I was turned on to this cd from a friend in tampa and couldnt believe my own ears... Jim is amazing and his musicains should be sainted... • everything I expect from Jim DiSpirito with a surprize or two

A well rounded project that holds all the cards of a great musical hand. Big Silence shows all the range of a true world class musician, and is still just a lil clumsy enouph that it doesnt come across as contrived... A great time with my headphones

  • Magical drive with the eternal heartbeat
    author: Jirus

As the year 2005 begins I just recieved this CD, Big Silence is joy of great proportion. The percussive music performs a dance inside the mind. The musicianship is highly skilled and the voices bring the words to life. With many influences, this recording is the whole ball of wax linking us to world sounds.

  • This is one of my all-time favorite albums
    author: Peg

Uh, what Purple Fly said. I love this CD. It's provocative, stimulating, thoughtful, intelligent... If you love diverse music, you gotta love this cd. If Cowboys & Indians was my personal soundtrack, I'd always be smiling and have sky underneath my feet!

  • Fun CD!
    author: lisa

This CD is lots of fun. Just when you think you have tuned into a trancey CD, the next song comes on and is blue-grassy. Definitely a welcome wide variety of sounds on this CD.

  • great disk man!!
    author: mick

This disk was great!! I downloaded it on to my minidisk, so now I can hear it everywhere I go! Thank for creating such a wonderful masterpiece of intelligent music!!

  • 5 Stars isn't enough!!
    author: Jamie

I usually don't write these things, but this was one time I HAD TO! First of all, imagine how long it takes an artist to create a CD that involves only one genre-such as rock or country western. Now, imagine how much time, effort, thought and talent it would take to create a CD with 5 genres...or even...10!!! The genres on this CD are extremely diverse, but they come together to form a wonderful whole-a masterpiece. The styles blend so well that they come together like a jigsaw puzzle. Ya know, one of those ones that's (supposed to be) shaped like something and has pieces shaped like who knows what? It's THAT good. When you listen to this CD, you won't be able to sit still. At least, I know I can't. If you don't own this CD yet, you should definitely buy it. And, if you think it costs too much (which it doesn't), ask Santa for it :)

  • Incredible music from Jim
    author: eGuitarWorld.com

Jim took his time getting this out to the masses, and it was worth every minute. The versatility of the songs are killer. This very wide range of music really shows what Jim can do, and makes this the type of cd that you just end up keeping in the cd player forever..it seems :-). I've had this cd in my car stereo for a couple of weeks, and then take it in the house and really crank it to get the whole feel. The mix is excellent. If you get the chance, light some incense, light some candles, get a good set of headphones (or not) and just enjoy. This has become an all time favorite. You can't go wrong buying this CD

  • Unique mixture of sounds, excellent CD
    author: Jess*

Excellent CD! The percussion is amazing, it brings in sounds from all over the world. Also, it has a modern feeling and puts to together the drums, jazz and country western and makes it sound good. This is an awesome jammin' CD...

  • New, different, exciting, unique…this is a breath of fresh air.
    author: sCoTt

If you have grown tired of the same musical formula found all over the airwaves try “BIG SILENCE.” It is rock and country…. western and world music all rolled into one. I can’t fully explain it, but it’s new direction on well worn paths.

  • Big Silence. A collection standout
    author: Mark KTMRFS

Big Silence has been a stand out of my collection this summer. The changes the album goes through really adds to the fun of the of this release. Leaving Kashmir, while initially grabbing just from great rythm, really grows after additional listenings. The concept of starting with really driving drums only to submerge them as a backdrop to an even more interesting rythem keeps bringing me back for more. Other cuts off the CD like Cowboys & Indians and Moment #2 rounds things out nicely. The way Ozark Sruti hammers into Orlando is especially fun. Playing any music parties can be touchy. Not so Big Silence. It always gets the "who is this anyway" response Just when you think you got a handle on things, Jim fires up Orlando or Change.. Great disk. A must for your collection.

Initially, I thought it was a jazz percussionist experiment, but I find its totality is a myriad of influences...from Hindu...to African...with even some Native American influences. It's mysterious...it's exciting...it's challenging...and it adds kindness to an already existing kind vibe. It's Drugstore Cowboy meets Burroughs in one song. It's Rusted Root meets Chick Corea...in another song, and early Chick Corea, mind you...was an apartment favorite...at one time...depending on where I was at in my life. That is what music is all about really...it asks...where are you at in your life? And the judgements made regarding the music itself...should direct you to the vortex of mind expansion; in layman's terms, it feels easier to accept varieties of musical journeys...and other artists paths of self discovery...when one has ventured on a similar path at a similar time in their life. Music represents growth...in the artist and the listener. To me...this was a beautiful extension of what Jim already gifted us wtih knowing during his years with Rusted Root. We already know he is intelligent...gifted...and open minded; with his solo effort...we are able to go on his first journey of self discovery with him. We feel his trials...his pain...and his virtual growth...through the expression of music. It asks you to take a chance with him...walk through his forest of silence with him...feel his heart beat with pain...hear his heart cry out in joy...feel his warmth and acceptance as he embraces a myriad of cultural influences. In turn, our hearts become open to accept our fellow travelers from all walks of life into our personal vision of reality. And that feeling transcends all barriers. It allows for deep exploration and mind travel in order to transcend the line that is often drawn between the artist and his art, thus allowing the work of art to not be separated from the artist's first vision of himself, joining both the artist and his vision with the accepting heart of the listener into one masterpiece of free form expression. Combine this with artistic performance, introduce The Only Dance There Is and the channeling of the spirit begins...and true freedom and full artistic freedom from all constraints is possible...as one is able to move gracefully from one path to the next, glide with the angels on a spiritual journey through time and space that knows no personal self; a spirit unaware of boundaries and barriers that only the self places to close the mind from universal love. Halfway through this magnificent beauty, i see Jon Voight walking down the NYC streets...with his cowboy hat on...my heart hears i'm going where the sun is shining...through the pouring rain...only to change up and have me back in my brother's freshman college dorm room smoking joints and listening to jazz circa 1977. Maybe it's because i feel i know the artist's influences...finally...I am old enough or young enough...when the artist's point of zen and mine are familiar...we take each other on different journeys...on a path we all find common ground on. We finally understand that the path of pain growth and acceptance...leads to the highest art form.
