The Dirt Surfers are 100% ROCK. Originally inspired by the heaviest rock band of all time, Black Sabbath, The Dirt Surfers evolved as they studied the muusic of Blue Oyster Cult, The Pixies, and The Clash.

Instead of vocals, The Dirt Surfers rely upon the guitar heroics of Doug Cornell (AKA "The Dirt Kahuna"). Cornell's ability to create lyrical passages with his guitar leaves the listener with melodies permanantly inprinted upon their brain.

"I was raised on Iommi, Blackmore, and Buck Dharma," says Cornell. All of these guys had technical chops, but what I got most from them was their capability to create melodic lead guitar passages."

The new Dirt Surfers' album, Kick Ass, Take Names, begins with an absolutely T-Rextacy searing version of the classic T. Rex track "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." Listeners will bounce around the room while listening to high-energy tracks like "Wicked Nutmeg," "Twisting a Hairpin," and "First to the Wall." Other important songs are the instrumental rock version of The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black."

A Message from Doug Cornell:
"When I decided to give up vocal songwriting nearly 10 years ago,I had no idea that I'd be able to create 5 albums worth of instrumental songs. Writing instrumental tunes requires an entirely different mindset. The songs need to have a strong melody, yet not be repetitive or formulatic. It helps to have many different influences, and I rely upon my background in athletics for inspiration.

The songs on this CD were mostly created to accompany short sports films.
"Kick Ass, Take Names"was written for a sports team.
"Titanium Springs" is featured in the motion picture: "Accidental Icon- The Real Gidget Story."
"Addicted To Chlorine" and "Treading Water" are music for swim teams.
"Wicked Nutmeg" is a soccer song.

When you listen to this album, try to imagine a 100 meter sprint, a discus throw,a perfect soccer pass or a dive from a 1 Meter spring board. Maybe the music will inspire you to take up a sport!

This album is dedicated to all amateur athletes, those of you who train hard to be faster, fitter and stronger than those who choose not to work out.

I must also thank Carol, Caitlin and Brian for allowing me to pursue this crazy passion."

  • Breathing Surf-Punk Life into Some Old Standards
    author: Flo

Bang a Gong - Swinging, fun, hardcore, perfect! Wow, the multitracked guitars sound super Dirt! The opportunity and licensing must be very exciting, I can see a lot of opportunities opening up with these brother, take it to the limit, kick big ass and to hell with the names. Paint it Black - loveX3 the build up, the guitar sounds are right on, the heavy chorus is a ruch of andenalin, wow your leads are terrific, I never knew your finger could fly like that. I need to hear the whole tunes man!!! Bring on the iTunes Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - my favorite, you completely made this track your own, breathed a lot of surf-punk into and made it one of the better covers I ever heard of a Beatles song, tough job done to perfection. The chorus just kills man, too awesome.
