notes

Digital Cutup Lounge: from the Hong Kong electronic underground.

Digital Cutup Lounge [DCL] are one of the leading electronic music groups to emerge from the exciting turn-of-the-century dance music scene in Hong Kong. Their music combines cutting-edge electronic beats and sounds with contemporary jazz improvisation, using digital music technologies to blend elements of old and new musics from around the world.

DCL cut and cut to the ruptures and the strokes, using computers to mix dance tracks, ambient noise, jazz solos, Internet radio broadcasts and music from all over the globe, following a massive multicultural collision course with our hyperaccelerated future.

DCL have released two CDs, Network Effects [Gogo.com, Mar 2002] and Cutup Mixdown [Gogo.com, Mar 2001], and their tracks have been featured on international CD compilations such as Eastern Sunrise [Universal Music Group, 2001] and Groove [Petrol Records, 2001]. They have also applied their uniquely warped sensibilities to remixes for such well-known artists as Astrud Gilberto, Barry White, Nelly Furtado, Enrique Iglesias, and Bollywood singer Asha Bhonsle.
Network Effects, their most recent CD release, is a hour-long continuous mix of original music from DCL and collaborators around the world including musicians and producers from Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Sydney.

In addition to their core lineup of two computers, bass and saxophone, DCL are often joined by additional instrumentalists as well, often including percussion, guitar, tabla, and erhu [Chinese violin]. They have performed at clubs and festivals throughout Asia and internationally, including venues in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, London, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Upcoming developments for DCL include performances in London, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and San Francisco as well as the release of a number of remix projects currently in the works.
