notes

Ripping Stories For Boys is the 11-track debut of Brisbane artist Jacob Diefenbach.

Little over a year ago, you had a better chance of spotting Jacob dancing at “The Beat” than performing at “The Zoo” on the eve of the Valley Fiesta, but in that short time, Jacob has firmly established himself on the local music scene with his prodigious piano skills and instantly memorable vocal sound.

Jacob’s own story has led him to a place where he is uniquely positioned to comment on what it means to be male in today’s society.

Diefenbach grew up in Central Queensland, surrounded by unyielding pressures to fit a mould of masculinity that simply wasn’t right for him.

In a world where young boys were expected to play rugby, not the piano, Jacob struggled to tread the line between what he was told was right for him, and what he knew was right for him.

Ripping Stories For Boys is told from “the other side of the pride”, as Jacob puts it.

“For me, being a ‘man’ was something dark and incomprehensible and inescapable. Everything I wanted for myself drew me further and further away from the pride.”

Jacob’s music spans a wide range of styles and influences, from the sharply whimsical ode to the male obsession with cars (Drive to Kill) to painful and elegiac explorations of the different ways deny their true selves (Casanova, Shepherds Sleeping).

A recurring theme is the pressure of expectation. Aryan Boy is a thumping, almost spiteful anthem to the gay club scene.

“Aryan Boy was a revelation for me. When I ‘came out’, it was a sensory explosion. I traded my piano in for a skin-tight shirt and didn’t look back. Eventually, it caught up with me and I saw that my “liberation” was disfiguring me and turning me into something sinister – almost inhuman.”

The keystone on Ripping Stories For Boys is Favourite Son, which tells the achingly personal story of a son growing up striving to match his father’s image of the ideal son. The song traverses guilt, disappointment, hatred and, ultimately, love, survival and understanding. This one story captures Jacob’s promise as an artist; it is honest and beautiful and confronting and universal.

Jacob is the rare kind of artist who arrives “fully formed”. Jacob’s next project is well underway but “top secret” for the time being.

“It would wrong if I stayed in this place… but these are the stories that needed telling first.”

Jacob's first Album has been here for ages, and while I have had it for some time, I have not thought of giving it a review. Ripping Stories for Boys is a great starting album for Jacob Diefenbach. The music talent of Jacob is an absolutly World Wonder, his voice is a refreshing one that many will soon fall into a deep trance listening to the stories he shares with his listeners. Master of Disguise; Jacob's second album, is a great way to get to know his wonderful musical talents, don't forget to check out his offical site www.JacobDiefenbach.com to see his YouTube videos, which will leave you wanting more!

  • Inspirational, clever, witty - can't wait to hear more!!
    author: Meg Dawson

I am so totally impressed with this artist. With so much shallow commercial rubbish around it's so great to hear something original, thought provoking and musically inspirational. Maybe a little too honest and edgy for some tastes but that's what I love about it. Something tells me that Jacob Diefenbach has the courage and the talent in bucket loads to go where not too many others are willing to go. Keep it coming!!!

  • Hard to get into, but brilliant.
    author: popeda

I heard some of this cd on myspace, and what i heard was brilliant. Perfect lyrics, brilliant musical movement, and amazing backgrounds. Thought the entire cd is amazing like this, many of the songs are amazing in too similar of ways. Some of the slower songs are hard to get into and hard to differentiate between other slow songs on the album. Golden Boy, Caged, Drive to Kill, and Aryan Boy all add some variety to the mix, and all the other songs are very deep and thoughtful. Although hard to get into at times, this cd showed incredible talent and just about anyone will find something in the lyrics that they can relate to.

  • One of a kind?
    author: Amy Dobson

Jacob was passed onto me by a friend on Myspace. Totally random. I can't stop listening to his CD + can't wait for more! Some songs are bitterly sweet and pure and seem to just float along and others are psychotic and crazy and passionate. Very versatile and very confident, especially for a first CD. There may be a few others out there like him, but Jacob is in a space (if not a league, I love Rufus too) entirely of his own. Love you Jacob.

  • Takes you on a journey of self discovery
    author: Ryan

Jacob's debut cd resonates with so many young gay guys who are entering into the big (and often scary) world. Tears are shed, lessons are learnt- but all of the pain and anguish voiced is in counterpoint to the purity of his beautifully sincere tenor. Jacob's music breaks ground by unashamedly showing the dirty underbelly of 'the scene' and yet his intimate insights leave the listener with the feeling that there may be hope amongst the glitter, condoms and fairy wings.

  • We Want More!
    author: Stephen G.

Cool, challenging lyrics, which frequently display the wisdom of an old soul...These works are bright, witty and very well produced, and show a shrewd awareness of not only the fads and foibles of gay culture, but our c 21 world of surface glitter and sterotypes, where reality is continually subverted/shaped by so called political correctness/the powers that be; we can hopefully look forward to more from Jacob in the future...

  • Honest,intelligent and a soul searching journey - a pop opera
    author: Jeffery Browne

This CD has pupose and integrety. Beatiful, sensitive and witty lyrics. Total honesty and a refusual to compromise to appease main stream sensibilities. This CD and artist is unique and extremely gifted. Musically he explores a hole gammet of emotions and concepts and he does it brilliantly. Hard to believe that this is a bebut album.

  • Nice to be surprised.
    author: Dave O'Sullivan

I heard about Jacob thru mogenic.com and traced his cd back to cdbaby. It's nice to know that with all the crap out there and all the sell outs and wannabes, someone like Jacob can come along and crush them all with raw talent and honesty. I don't think I've heard anybody who writes and sings like Jacob. Faves are Aryan Boy, Favourite Son, Exiting and An Ordinary Kind of Guy ... (but I love them all, lol)
