notes

Dick Hindman began playing classical piano at age 11.

Then, in 1961, someone played him an Oscar Peterson record.

He was excited by jazz since it combined the dynamic rhythmical concepts of blues and the tonality of classical music.

He then began listening to Eroll Garner, George Shearing, Art Tatum, Ahmad Jamal, Miles Davis with Wynton Kelly, and Bill Evans.

In 1972, Dick played his first recording date as a sideman on Pete Christlieb's "Jazz City" album.

In 1973, Dick moved to San Francisco where he worked as a musician in many jazz clubs.

In 1978, Dick went to Denver for nine months to head up a trio at Clyde's Pub where he worked with Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Dakota Staton, Harold Land, Blue Mitchell, Leon Thomas, Eddie Jefferson and Richie Cole.

Back in San Francisco, Dick joined up with Richie Cole, recording and touring in Japan, Europe, the United States and Canada.

He performed on many Riche Cole albums including "Hollywood Madness" (Muse), "Alto Annie" (Palo Alto Records), "Steam" (Palo Alto Records), "Pop Bop" (Fantasy) and "Profile" (Heads Up).

He also performed on the Manhattan Transfer's Grammy winning "Vocalese" album.

Dick has also played with Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, and many other jazz greats.

  • A rare find!
    author: Martin Jones

I stumbled across this Dick Hindman's CD by sheer chance looking for some traditional tune called the Secret Garden. I did not get what I was looking for but instead I have found a real jewel which now takes it's place in my collection. I played the tunes on the site and knew that I just had to have this music. Thank you to every one involved!

Dick's incredible time, taste and technique in a Oscar Peterson style makes this CD a winner. Hear a bit of Niels Pedersen in Paul's inspiring bass playing and memories of Ed Thigpen in Colin's performance!

  • As good a jazz trio album as a human being can make.
    author: Reed Kotler

A very original, yet mainstream jazz piano trio album. This is about as good a jazz trio album as a human being can make. If you dig Bill Evans or Oscar Peterson, you'll love this album.

  • A great jazz piano trio. As good as it gets!
    author: Pat Rickey

This is a great CD set for anyone who loves the piano trio. All of the playing is fantastic. You'll love this recording. The piano intro and solo on the track Somebody Somewhere is one of the best piano solos ever recorded. Check this out!
