notes

"A Schooner Songbag"...Songs for the S/V Denis Sullivan includes seventeen songs about Wisconsin's Flagship the schooner S/V Denis Sullivan and the history of the Great Lakes. Wisconsin Lake Schooner Artist-in-Residence and "chantyman" David HB Drake and the Schooner Shanty Singers (members of David's Monthly "Shanty Singout" gathering) are joined by a panorama of Milwaukee folk artists featuring Will Branch, Monica Marshall, Kevin Soucie, Rodd Walker, Chuck Ward, Negamojig (The Milwaukee Ojibwe Choir) , and special guest Pete Seeger. Pete Seeger's work with the "Clearwater" on New York's Hudson River was both an inspiration for the Wisconsin Lake Schooner "S/V Denis Sullivan" and a role model for Drake, who served on the "Clearwater " crew. David received the WAMI "Folk Music Artist of the Year 2002" for his work.
The album includes songs adapted from "salt water" Chanties for actual use on the schooner, original compositions, and historic songs of the Great Lakes.

  • Say a prayer for those who sail the Lakes of A-mer-i-key
    author: John Williamson

Wisconsin folksinger/songwriter David HB Drake offers an insight that few deepwater salt sailors understand, and the music in this album reflects this. The Great Lakes were often known to ocean sailors as the Lakes of Amerikey, and they frequently looked down on Great Lakes sailors as farm boys or country bumpkins who sailed around in ponds and puddles. That's what they thought until they tried sailing the Lakes themselves. This album has some wonderful songs, but David Drake's message is best illustrated with his own original work the Lakes of A-mer-i-key, a composition (and performance) which alone is worth the price of this album. This reviewer agrees with Ms. Satter that this is indeed a 5-star offering.

  • A "must have" if you'd rather be sailing
    author: Carolyn Satter

This CD is a great combination of solo and group voices singing of the seas. If you would rather be spending your time of the water, this is a great addition to your library. If you don't know the songs already, you'll quickly be singing along. If you are a sailor "from afar", you quickly become attached to the songs.
