Introduction:
Conscious is the long awaited follow up to Julie Dexter's Peace of Mind and
Dexterity which combined have sold over 40,000 copies in their limited release.
A dynamic singer/songwriter /composer and producer hailing from Birmingham,
England, Julie's artistic passions flow in her latest effort, an insight to her
muse on love, trust, and the plight of perseverance. Blending the signature
brand of meditative funk and soul from label mate Michael Johnson with her
jazzy reggae vocal stylings, together they have produced Conscious.

CDBaby recommendation didn't disappoint........
author: SteveI wasn't able to find Carmen Rogers in the retail stores so a friend recommended CDBaby. CDBaby not only had the CD but also recommended that I try Julie Dexter AND guaranteed my satisfaction with their recommendation! Sounds like a no lose situation to me so I purchased both CD's. Julie Dexter didn't disappoint! This is a CD you can listen to from the first track to the last track and although I love Carmen Rogers, this CD is better. Pick it up!!

Conscious soul in an unconscious music scene.
author: diy dannaWith Conscious, the third time is indeed the charm for the soulful U.K. singer Julie Dexter. I first heard her silky neo-soul vocals while sampling new indie music at the eclectic cdbaby.com 3 years ago, and have been looking forward to hearing more from Ms. Dexter. I had high expectations after waiting so long since her wonderful sophomore LP Dexterity, to the point of downloading mp3s from the new album before a copy of the LP was available. From hearing "Choices", the opening track, I knew her latest CD was worth the 3 years wait. She starts off with a very laidback but musically conscious vibe that is consistent throughout the album that announces a strong, "new" force of nature in R&B/Soul. Unlike many Top 40 R&B albums, Conscious has wonderfully subtle and poetic lyrics, and music that doesn't sound programmed from a keyboard or the latest software for mass consumption. Please make a mental note: Julie Dexter offers the triple threat talents of writing, performing and producing - her way. This perfect example of how wonderful diy music is and can be is reflected in her conscious decision to take creative control of her music, not being dictated by marketing trends. As a British singer of Jamaican descent in a U.S./Multinational Corporation dominated music industry, this is a risky move. But the risk has paid off in more ways than one - she's sold more than 40,000 copies of this CD since it's limited release in Fall 2004, reaching fans across the Atlantic and around the globe - and inspiring other musical artists to write their own destinies. (Just listen to the Marvin Gaye "What's Goin' On" vibe of "The Race".) And please quote me on this: Julie Dexter's Conscious rivals Jill Scott's gem Beautifully Human and Erykah Badu's underappreciated Worldwide Underground. And she does it without relying on a copycat style. Julie Dexter has found her own voice, and that voice is clear with relaxed confidence and grace. Like her previous albums, Peace of Mind and Dexterity, she further explores her reggae roots, yet maintains her distinctive soulful jazz and funk sound in Conscious. Some of the remarkable songs include an opposite's attract heart-clencher "Like Ours", and "Show Me Now" - a beckoning slow groove with a seductive flute in the background. The title track asks the listener to question our existence, or as one biography states "re-evaluate ourselves". Then it all unwinds with "Rain Song", a jazzy, lazy Sunday afternoon track reminiscent of the sweet 'n' soft Abbey Lincoln. Overall, her leisurely musical meditation Conscious is welcome in a culture that seems dominated by mediocre talent that doesn't survive 15-minutes of fame. Julie Dexter is a truly conscious soul in an unconscious music scene. This CD is higly recommended for R&B, reggae, and neo-soul lovers, hip-hop heads, and even jazz purists. Ketch a vibe and enjoy!
Julie is HOT!!

One of the best new albums of the year
author: SoulTracks.comWith Conscious, Julie Dexter has confirmed that she is one of the most important and interesting young artists in Soul Music and has provided one of the best albums I've heard so far this year. Highly recommended. [To read entire review, visit www.soultracks.com/julie_dexter.htm]
Conscious by Julie Dexter, is an album that I have been listening to off and on
author: Bob DavisConscious by Julie Dexter, is an album that I have been listening to off and on for the past month. It's definitely become one of my "secret pleasures". Watching the career of Julie Dexter has become for me something akin to slowly watching a flower bloom. Closed it looks like it might be average and pedestrian, however slowly over time it blooms and becomes more and more beautiful. This is some serious "grown folks music" that is both thoughtful and erotic. Serious lyrics of romance and love, backed by by slow burning jazz/funk. Comparisons are always unfair, but I'll do it anyhow. Does anyone here remember how they felt when they first heard Angela Bofil, Gabriella Anders, Sade, etc...(Julie Dexter gives me that very same feeling). This album represents in my mind what all of the failed attempts at "neo soul" aspired to, but never quite measured up to. Of course the term "neo soul" is now out of vogue, but I'll take it and use it for my own purposes. As a child of the 1970's I can say without any sense of trepidation or fear that if this album had come out in say 1976 all of the rest of yall who are "children of the 1970's" would have brought this album as soon as you heard it, rushed home, carefully removed the album from it's sleeve and placed the pristine LP on the turntable. Then after that first play, you would be on the phone to your friends to come on over and listen. After hanging up the phone, you would then break out the incense and "iced tea" fully confident in the knowledge that you were about to turn your friends on to a musical treat that would soon send them scurrying down to the record store to repeat the very same process that you had just gone through yourself. Taken as a whole all of the songs sound like they could have easily been retitled "Adventures In Paradise Part 2". My favorite song on this album is "Small Talk", I haven't heard horns used so effectively in a slow jam in a long time. This is the best album I have heard so far in 2005 (we shall see if it stays there?) I fully realize that many of you out there are skeptical, and are saying to yourself (What in the hell is Bob talking about I've never even heard of Julie Dexter).... But that's ok (it won't be the first time that has happened) Yall gotta get past that "I've never heard of artist XXXXX" mentality. I realize that may be difficult for some of yall. But if you can't you are gonna miss out on some GREAT music. If you are a person who falls into this category, I ain't mad at cha, but please do me a fava by passing this review on to at least 10 other people that you know. Who knows, you just might be turning your friends on to some music that might change their life, if even for just one day. And for having done so, they will be eternally greatful (and you get some "extra karma points") This is one that you need to put on your short list of unknown artists that I asked everyone here at the beginning of the year to COMMIT TO BUYING A CD DIRECT FROM A ARTIST WEBSITE IN THE YEAR 2005. We will be featuring Julie Dexter's new CD "Conscious" here on Soul-Patrol.Net radio (www.soul-patrol.net) starting sometime next week. The following week we will doing an email blast and having an online listening party in our chat room. I strongly urge yall to check these things out if you want to experience some BRAND NEW... "Great Black Music From The Ancient To the Future..."
