notes
"I often discuss album listenings as a journey. Never has that analogy seemed more appropriate than on this phenomenal album of colors, songs and vision-scapes that takes you into 11 little dreamworlds from which you genuinely aren’t thrilled to wake up."
-P. Kellach Waddle, Pulitzer Prize Nominated Composer/Folkwax Contributing Writer
"The biggest thrill of writing this column...is finding a talent like Krista Detor and a record like her A Dream in a Cornfield..."
-Mark Kirby, NY, Assoc. Writer/Reviewer musicdish.com
"Krista Detor is one of the finest singer/songwriters I've run across in years...with a voice that could sing the telephone book and make it sound beautiful and compelling!"
-Carrie Newcomer, Grammy Winning Recording Artist, Rounder Records
"A great voice..."
-Gary Katz, Producer, Steely Dan
"Creative, very diverse... from quirky to piano to pop, to full out produced blues..."
-Derek Sivers, President, CDBaby.com
"The force of power in these songs is as clear to the listener as her name itself:detour/Detor. Her range of emotion packed into these vibrant lyrics is a breathtaking journey off the beaten path."
- Kris Lee, Playwright, 2004 Tennessee Williams Award Winner.
Musical styles and influences abound in her writing and she displays a versatility that is hard to categorize. A poetic and sought-after lyricist, Krista's songs are vignettes, telling stories of time and experience. Her quiet musical intensity has been compared to that of Leonard Cohen. She's more than humbled by the comparison--but tends to shy away from discussion of inspiration and influence. "We're all constantly absorbing the physical and social landscapes. We process mountains of information every day...how could anyone single out one inspiration, one influence? There isn't just one. My biggest influence is every word I've ever read...and Leonard Cohen right after that."

Krista Detor will take your breath away!
author: Willa ShafferI picked up this CD and the new Mudshow the first time I heard Krista, which luckily for me, was up close and personal in an awesome house concert last weekend. I sat positively spellbound through each of the songs she and Dave Weber performed, entranced by her astonishing lyrics, superb arrangements, and Krista's magnificent vocals. Since that concert, I've immersed myself in the songs of Mudshow and it was tough to take it out of the loop long enough to listen to A Dream in a Cornfield...which is, simply spoken, a musical masterpiece in its every nuance! It amazes me that Krista Detor can be a secret among music lovers, if not her peers...she is unquestionably the most gifted singer/songwriter I've ever heard, and add to that her skills on the piano and magical ability to paint a vivid landscape with her lyrics, vocal range, and arranging, and this seems to conclude that Krista is a one-of-a-kind, superb artist in a class by herself. Good grief, folks, buy all of her music you can, and listen to her every chance you get and, by all means, GO SEE HER IN CONCERT! She will take your breath away, and that's a promise!
Wonderful!
author: TammyI'd been listening to Mudshow for months and just had to hear A Dream in a Cornfield! Both CDs are terrific! They go great with a bottle of wine by the fireplace!
A supreme talent
author: Betsy JohnsonI originally bought Mudshow, her latest CD and loved it so much I then bought this one. The styles seem different to me, but both are extraordinary. Phenomenal, poetic lyrics coupled with a voice that makes my heart sing. Just beautiful.
It's as if she can see into your soul
author: bobbie blues-girlTHIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CD's. Krista is oozing with musicianship, and this CD is a prime example. Her lyrics are twisted, loving, creative, and relevant. Her piano playing, and choice of accompanyment are superb. "A DREAM IN A CORNFIELD" is definately one to add to your music collection.
Here's why you should own this recording:
author: Claudia PetersonLyrics your brain can sink its teeth into, ample technical prowess to keep musicians (I mean the real ones, guys, not those of you who can play the intro to "Home Sweet Home" on the piano, 'kay?) aurally captivated, and always utterly listenable, this is one of the best first outings I've ever heard. Krista's voice is inifinitely versatile, conversational at times, then sexy, then pure , then all of those at once - but always beautiful. Beautiful arrangements, too - I defy the coldest & most heartless among us to listen to "On the Water" from start to finish without getting goosebumps, even if you're the type to roll your eyes at the sheer emotional breadth of the song (I'm a shameless weeper, myself). Buy this CD now, then start saving your pennies for her second. I'm sleepin' on the sidewalk outside the record store (figuratively) for that one.

A lot of artists want to stand out; that's par for the course in this industry. But few do. Most are cut from the same inch-thick, high-hat dough and half-baked. Not Detor. Unlike many freshmen attempts, Detor focuses her style on experience, not exposure. There's no apologetic riffs; there's no predictable expectations. The force of power in these songs is as clear to the listener as her name itself: detour/Detor. Her range of emotion packed into these vibrant lyrics is a breathtaking journey off the beaten path.
If you're a fan of the "new folk" songwriters - the pop-inflected, roots-inspired artists like Dar Williams or Gillian Welch - then you have no reason not to get yourself a copy of A Dream in a Cornfield. It's authentic music that's not afraid to be melodic, funny, smart or surprising. Lyrics are strong, the production and musicianship is high-quality (without being slick or overprocessed), but what really makes this album a winner is the strength of the songs. You might find yourself humming "Blue Sky" or "Salome" for weeks.
