notes
The Country Music industry is always full of surprises and DESERT HEAT, country music’s dark horse is certainly no exception. A band that began in a barn in rural Quebec nearly 17 years ago has the big boys in Nashville talking.
No one was expecting one of country’s hottest new acts to explode from this part of North America. There has not been a major country band emerge from this part of Canada in industry memory.
Ever.
DESERT HEAT’s song writing style and sound is truly unique, influenced by the rural isolation but rich cultural history of their home. Their music could best be described as a blend of traditional country music, folk, bluegrass, pop and driving rock. The lyrical content is image-rich story telling with a simple sentimental voice and street-smart, fun-loving sensibility.
DESERT HEAT’s debut CD (which was co-produced by Wayne Warner) on the B-Venturous record label, “Forever Road” is quickly gaining critical acclaim across Canada and the USA. The first single, “Gone (but not forgotten)” was immediately picked up by country radio stations radio across Canada and put into regular rotation literally within days of its release. DESERT HEAT is to be officially introduced in to the USA in early 2006. They have already built a substantial fan base to the south, penetrating the market coast-to-coast and border-to-border solely through word of mouth.
Recently, DESERT HEAT was the one of the opening acts for The Road Hammers on their sold-out tour across Canada. Immediately the two bands hit it off and audience reaction was nothing short of phenomenal. After the shows new fans eagerly lined up to meet the band, to have autographs signed and take pictures with the boys as well as the headliner.
With over 1000 professional live performances under their belt, DESERT HEAT knows how to put on an explosive and dynamic show. In the early years they won numerous back-to-back regional battle of the bands competitions. In 1996, the group landed a gig with Canadian broadcasting giant, CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National TV and CBC radio), performing for the season launch party. Their successes lead to them becoming the house band for numerous other CBC events. Kenny King (CBC Senior Manager, Eastern Sales for CBC Media Sales & Marketing) claims, “ DESERT HEAT was a major high light of CBC’s 1997 Fall Launch event in Montreal…They were so well received that they were booked for four more subsequent CBC events in ‘97, ‘98 and ’99. Simply put, the ‘Heat rules!”
The release of their first album, ‘Forever Road’ is just the beginning for this group. With over 200 original songs yet to be recorded they are standing at the precipice of becoming one of the greatest country rock acts to ever come south. This is a dark horse worth betting on.

The Best CD I've Listened To In Ages!
author: JasonThis CD is quite simply - superb! Desert Heat have put together a great collection of catchy songs that will grab your attention from start to finish. The up beat tempos of "Every Little Thing" and "Gonna Getcha Back" will keep your toes tapping, while the harmonies of "When You Come Around" and "Once Upon A Time" will keep you humming for hours. For those listeners who enjoy a good ballad, "Rain 'N Whiskey" provides everything a great slow song should. The tongue in cheek lyrics of "Wiggle It" are likely to make it a poplar choice in dance bars everywhere. "Summer" has hit written all over it, as it has a great melody and lyrics that evoke memories of lost love and summers gone by. Finally, the album is rounded off by the soft and soothing lyrics of "Forever Road", which speaks of a love that grows forever and cannot be broken. If this album is a sign of things to come, then Desert Heat is on their way to BIG places. Get this CD... You won't regret it.

Practice Makes Perfect
author: George Peden - CSO Staff JournalistThere’s an adage my mother and my remembered math teacher at high school used to tell me. Practice makes perfect. Desert Heat, out of Quebec, Canada, must have heard the same advice. Plying and ploughing their music for years, cris-crossing America and Canada as a covers band, they’ve recently released their debut, Forever Road (B-Venturous Records). And let me fuel the interest; from the opening chords to the last bar, these guys offer a biting style that leaves you wondering why they waited. Recently on the road as the opening act for Jason McCoy’s band, the Road Hammers, Desert Heat is one exciting act. The band, who’ve been together in the main for over 18 years, is Trevor Bruton on lead vocals and younger sibling Tim on guitar, with Jarrod Tetreault on acoustic guitar and Robin Wilkinson on bass. Besides playing, these guys also back up on harmony. (New band inductees Terry Joe Rodrigues on banjo, mandolin and harmonica, with Scott "Mookie" Foster on drums, now add power to an energetic and talented line-up.) A support cast of album notables including Dave Pomeroy on bass, drummers John Gardiner/Paul Scholten, Keith Sewel on guitar, Russ Pahl on lap steel, Wanda Vick on mandolin and Dobro, Michael Rolas on keyboards and Michael Spriggs on guitar round out the instrumentation. The album, recorded in Nashville, comes with 11 tracks, all produced under the guiding hand of friend and band mentor, Wayne Warner. Packed with sting and grunt, the album is hard, rocky and fuelled with a confidence that comes from the band writing all the tunes. Shaded with vocal comparisons to John Mellencamp, the album grabs from the first track. And it doesn’t let go. “Gone But Not Forgotten”, telling of a romance that’s moved on but that lingers still, is the lead track. Punctuated with some solid lead guitar, it’s a redeeming plus not over stated across an album that shows versatility, style and overall balance. “Summer” is a tale of a girl with a seasoned name; the track, pumped with tight drumming and a hooky guitar riff, rides nicely with band back-up harmony – it’s a winner and a radio certainty. The tune shows the writing promise of the band, it highlights their cohesive harmonies and, if that’s not enough, musically, it offers a catchy pull that stays with you. Other winning tracks on the album include the rock-edged “How You Do It” and the piano-lead “Rain ’N’ Whiskey”. With a title offering the needed ingredients to make a lover’s misery complete, the tune, again, brings the band’s talents to the front. Trev Bruton’s vocal ache and the crafted playing all showcase diverse possibilities for a band that strays, ever so keenly, from Nash Vegas predictability. For something different, have a listen to “Wiggle It”. Sounding like something you’d hear on a Confederate Railroad release, the track, on first hearing, disappointed. I mean, wiggle it? Pounded, loud and brash and wrapped in humor, the track tells that the good times are waiting…if you follow the given advice. It seems an odd inclusion here, but give it several plays, and like the song tells us:” it ain’t hurtin’ anyone.” The band’s hoping for some major label interest this year. We hope they get it. They come weathered with road and touring experience, they play and harmonize tightly, and Bruton’s edgy vocals, sharp and raw without over emoting, make them ready. Practice makes perfect.

The perfect Road trip CD for a bike run
author: Jerry DubetIf your musical tastes only allow George Jones, Porter Wagoner and Patsy Kline, then do yourself a favor and don't buy this CD. On the other hand If you like Kenney Chesney, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban and even the old Eagles stuff, this CD will become one of your favorites. This was the perfect Road trip CD. This is my sound track for interstate 95 and Daytona bike week from now on like the Eagles are for Sturgis. -My 2 Cents.

Plenty of pedal steel, banjo and vocal harmonies, nicely coated with a West Coast spirit and strong rhythm section. It's flashback time with Canada's Desert Heat to the bliss-out, acid-washed Southern California country-rock scene of the 1970s. Wearing their influences on their fringed sleeves and western boots, this four-man outfit conjures up a sound swirling with tie-dyed touches of the Eagles, Pure Prairie League and The Outlaws. Though they've been in existence for some 15 years, this is their debut album, and for some strange reason they traveled to Nashville to record, where they added guest musicians Dave Pomeroy (bass), John Gardner (drums, percussion), Keith Sewel (acoustic guitar), Russ Pahl (lap steel, and banjo), Michael Spriggs (acoustic guitar), Wanda Vick (banjo, mandolin, Dobro), and Michael Rolas (keyboards, and piano) to their own guitars and bass. Desert Heat fills the album with driving country-rock lovingly accented with steel and banjo flourishes and great vocal harmonies. Trev Brunton's crusty lead vocals- he stays within himself and doesn't oversing- help push it in that direction. All songs are penned by the band, and are of a good quality, though the disc does have its frustrating moments. The singalong, slightly childish Wiggle It and the twee Every Little Thing might have been better left for their live shows, but when the band aligns all their elements right, as on the old yet new sounding Gone (But Not Forgotten) and the slower Rain'n Whiskey, they move out of the retro 1970s time-warp into something memorable in its own right. The playing, led by Tim Brunton's sly and biting guitar work and the forceful rhythm section, is tight, lending the music a great sense of urgency. It's easy to describe Desert Heat as a retro band, but gems like the rootsy Gonna Getcha Back or the heart-aching Summer reveals a band that deftly meshes country's woe and twangy whine into powerful music. CD Review - DESERT HEAT - Forever Road DESERT HEAT Forever Road B-Venturous Records - DHCD6152118 Produced by: Wayne Warner and Desert Heat (11 Selections – Playing Time 40:17) Gone (But Not Forgotten) / Summer / Forever Road / Every Little Thing / How You Do It / Just Like The First Tine / When You Come Around / Once Upon A Time / Rain ‘n Whiskey / Wiggle It / Gonna Getcha Back Desert Heat is a four-man (and growing) band out of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. That in itself is pretty special, since they represent one of the rare Quebec-based acts to break onto the national country music scene in ages (notwithstanding that four-sixth’s of Emerson Drive is Quebec-born). The group, featuring lead singer Trevor Brunton, Jarrod Tetreault (guitar/vocals), Tim Brunton (lead guitar/vocals) and Robin Wilkinson (bass/vocals), presents a high-energy style of country and country/rock, with a mixed sound that ranges from the early country/rock of Poco and Pure Prairie League to the more contemporary work of Canada’s Doc Walker band. The Desert Heat package is made even more impressive considering that their material is all original, written largely by Jarrod Tetreault and Trevor Brunton; and delivered with strong four-part harmonies. The album’s lead single, Gone (But Not Forgotten) has already generated some national airplay. There are several more selections here that should create a similar stir, most notably the album’s powerful title track Forever Road, a bluesy/country offering in Rain ‘N Whiskey which is delivered with a gritty vocal by Trevor Brunton and supported by some special “thunder” effects; and Gonna Getcha Back, a ‘newgrass’-flavored effort, complete with a banjo intro, which is likely the most ‘countryfied’ item on the album. Listen also for something special in the driving Just Like The First Time, which is given a soulful vocal reading. Some of the country/rock cuts here, Once Upon A Time, Wiggle It, Every Little Thing, and When You Come Around (not the recent Deric Ruttan hit of the same title), should all be welcomed by today’s country radio stations who feast on high-energy music. Forever Road was produced by Desert Heat in Nashville studios with the help of Wayne Warner, and features a star-studded lineup of session players (Wanda Vick, Russ Pahl, Troy Lancaster, Dave Pomeroy, etc.). The Desert Heat ‘sound’ has already become an in-demand commodity within Nashville circles… it should be interesting to see how quickly Canadian radio catches up.
