notes
"Six String Shuffle" is a collection of solo acoustic guitar pieces running well over an hour's play time. All the pieces are original compositions except the traditional tunes "Amazing Grace" and "Sheebeg Sheemore". Despite what the CD title may suggest the music ranges in mood from romantic ballads to blues and ragtime pieces. I try in most of the music I write to have a distinct melody line front and center. I like to listen to music that I can hum along with. I hope that among these different songs there is something here for everyone who enjoys acoustic guitar music.
My earlier background in guitar is classical guitar but now I am writing music for steel string fingerstyle guitar. Guitars recorded for this CD include a Collings OM-1A, Collings C10 Deluxe, and an Albert Mueller S-6.
This is my third CD and my recording sound has evolved. For those interested technical details these songs were recorded in stereo with either Microtech Gefell M300s or a M300 with a Neumann TLM 103, preamped with a Great River MP-2H, and then on to a RME Firewire 800 AD/DA interface.
I SUGGEST FOR DECENT SOUND QUALITY LISTENING IN HI-FI MODE (STEREO) WHICH IS AVAILABLE ONLY UNDER "LISTEN TO ALL CLIPS - BROADBAND" OR GO TO MY WEBSITE AND LISTEN TO THE CLIPS THERE IN HIGHER RESOLUTION. CLICKING ON INDIVIDUAL CLIPS LISTED ON CDBABY WILL PLAY IN LO-FI MONO.

Love great melodies and fingerpicked guitar?
author: Michael DerningI've had this baby in my rotation for a couple months now. It always seems to merit another spin. In addition to being a first class fingerpicker, Derek is a prolific composer, overflowing with countless very cool musical motifs and melodies. If I had to start with something I'd say his heart is in classic rags but things always manage to morph. There's often a tin pan alley flavor where you swear someone is going to start singing (I think he should investigate this....). Regardless, the songs are always entertaining and very well presented. You can't go wrong with this one.
Another winner from Mr. Coombs!
author: Tom YoungWell if Derek keeps reaching up in the air and grabbing all the great melodies, what will that leave for the rest of the composer/musicians? Another fine collection to add to the Derek Coombs folder on my Ipod. The previous reviewers have said it all I think. Excellent compositions spanning numerous genres and played with great finesse. A must-have for the acoustic guitar fingerstyle afficionado.

I've had Six String Shuffle for about a week now and can't stop listening! "Token" just floored me..what a tune! The notes just dovetail so beautiful together. Outstanding writing and playing!!
Yet another inspiring compilation of tunes from Derek Coombs!
author: Andre Fortin"Six String Shuffle" represents another great collection of fingerstyle originals by Derek Coombs, and includes even a few covers of traditional and well-known classics(Sheebeg Sheemore & Amazing Grace). I echo the previous reviewer's comments on the artist's varied style and musical content of this latest offering. Derek's playing chops are most definitely on display on every track, and they expose the range of the music beautifully. It's an inspiring effort on his part and a treat to listen to. I agree! Six String Shuffle is a highly recommended addition to any CD player!
No shortage of adjectives to describe these tunes.
author: David HilyardAs I listened to Six String Shuffle I couldn't help assembling an array of adjectives that the tunes brought to mind. Bluesy rag, contemplative, jazzy chord melody, jaunty, cheery, mysterious minor voicing syncopation, Cole Porter-like, multi-textured, shimmering harmonics, fun 12 bar blues, resonant drone tones, soothing melodic style. This CD has it all. And played impeccably. My favorite is Token. Wonderful tone with lots of different techniques and a great feel. The CD recording quality is top notch as well! If you like the sound of an acoustic steel string guitar played well, buy this CD. Highly recommended!!!!
