DENISE FREEMAN
A Musical Biography

Denise Ann Freeman began singing at the age of five. By the age of seven she was confidently singing a Charley Pride hit song with her father as he strummed his guitar. Denise grew up in a musical family with her mother playing the organ and her sisters singing and playing the acoustic guitar. Together they would entertain all and sundry, in a swanky four-part harmony.

Denise started writing poetry at the age of 13 and by the age of 14, she was playing the guitar and composing songs. (To date, she has written more than 200 poems of which she has turned into a self published book, called "A Lyrical Life".)

When Denise turned 16, she entered a singing competition under the youth category, for the Sri Sathya Sai World Peace Festival. She won 1st prize for best rendition and best composition, which led her to win a trip to Perth, Australia.
She also appeared at the KL Plaza Extravaganza decked in a cowboy outfit, belting her songs to the public.

In 1987 Denise's father opened a Country & Western Pub called the Gold Canyon. Denise took this opportunity to sing a few numbers with a few local bands whenever she could.

In her late teens, Denise jammed with OD Levy and the resident band, at the River Bank in Central Market and even formed a band of her own, at thelocal college she attended. She also jammed at a bar called Treffpunkt with Alex Peters.

At 20 years of age, Denise hit the stage again, singing to a large audience at the Strange Days Concert, organized by Peter Hassan. Held at the British Council, the proceeds of the tickets, went to the Nature Society.

The following year, Denise's country and western jingle, " Go super Shell" hit national radio and t.v. and since then, Denise's voice has been used for many a product in the Malaysian advertising scene.

In 1993, at the age of 23, one of Denise's songs featured in Markiza's album, Open Secret. The song was called 'Up on a Hill', and was sung by Markiza.

Denise embarked on a professional career in writing for more than a decade, whilst continuing to sing and play the guitar on the side and jamming with musicians, whenever she could. In 1999 Denise traveled from Malaysia to Finland and then to Romania, whereupon she continued to write more songs.

Naked & Undone, the album
In 2004, Denise decided that 17 years of song writing was too incredible to contain. The result- eight of her best songs recorded in Malaysia, backed by some of Malaysia's renowned artists like Julian Mokhtar, Jaime Wilson, Jimmie Loh and Bada .

Her musical ability and her versatility from song to song are undeniable throughout the album. Her melodies are memorable and very sing-along. In fact, most of her tracks are commercially catchy.

Her world of music glides from folk to blues to soul and country and western. Called, 'Naked and Undone', the album is really an open journal, in which Denise bears her soul for anyone wishing to listen, or read into her.

Her musical influences as she was growing up (besides Charley Pride & Johnny Cash) were Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald and Van Morrison. Her country and western influence prevails subtly in her music and she has the up beat rhythm of Shania Twain and her lyrics are 'Edie Brickell' sharing a tequila sunrise with 'Suzanne Vega'. She does all her own female backing vocals. Yet, Denise is an individual in her own right.

"Putting this album together was an incredible journey for me," Denise says.
"I worked with the multi-talented JD; the director genius of Studio 21:05 and star guitarist from the rising international band, Pop Shuvit. JD created a unique pulse behind each song, exploring different genres and instruments like harps, flutes, the udhu, djembe and a didgeridoo sounding instrument. "

"What makes the album extra special is, I got to work with some exciting people in music and I had input from people I grew up with like Rafique Rashid, Peter and Markiza Hassan, Antares and Amir Yusoff. The end result is an album that is culmination of my past and present; a reflection of whom I am - an open book, hence the title of the ablum."

So, Get 'Naked and Undone', with Denise.

  • Naked and Undone - Great variety of music
    author: Kay Broom

I love the variety of music and lyrics. Denise is so multi-talented. I met her personally and she is so sweet, a very special lady. I would like to hear more from her.

  • So raw
    author: Nas

A really raw album. Cuts to the chase about emotions so many of us feel in one way or another. The fact that Denise's voice is so smooth and sexy doesn't hurt either.

  • Refreshing and something for everyone
author: CJL, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia

Denise's album is very easy on the ear and if you take the time to listen to the lyrics you are in af a treat. I have only read the story behind one of the songs, but wish I knew the story behind each song. Even my old mother likes the album and she actually borrowed it for two months. Well done Denise! I am sure we are quite a few who look forward to your next CD. Keep up the good work! By the way your life performance was good too...

  • Who wouldn't want to get naked and undone with Denise?
    author: Ralph Polko Netherlands

8 intense and divers tracks, for sure to touch everybody somewhere! All Denise's songs make me want to get naked and undone with her, track 8 being my definite favourite...

  • Astounding vitality and verve in a debut album from a potential international st
    author: Antares

I doff my hat to Denise Freeman for getting down and just doing what many singer-songwriters dream about but rarely accomplish: putting their money where their mouth is and recording their own songs, instead of simply bitching about how dumb and demoralizing the music industry is. For her debut album, Denise has put her heart and soul into producing an absolutely listenable - and danceable - collection of very personal songs, that effectively blend a disarming rawness of delivery with precocious sophistication. You can FEEL this lady's soul shine through on every track; and the broad range of styles makes it wonderfully eclectic and never repetitive or blah. Denise does soulful country ballads and middle-of-the-road radio-friendly fare - and then surprises with a disco number or two a la Christina Aguilera! The musical arrangements are mature and tight and beautifully support her vivacious personality and crystalline voice. NAKED & UNDONE bears repeated listening and will grow on anybody with unjaded ears. I shall certainly cherish my autographed copy - especially since I first met Denise when she was all of 16. What a joy to hear her all grown up and sexy as any pop icon! :-)

  • Unexpectedly refreshing music
    author: A. Pasqual( Sweden)

Denise bares her soul to her public. No doubt her songs are drenched with pain and loss but that is real life. We listeners recognise ourselves in her music. My absolute favourites are FREEDOM IS CALLING, A CERTAIN KIND OF BLUE and EASY.

  • Naked and undone is full of touching lyrics and dancable rythms.
    author: Riitta Huttunen, Finland

Denise Freeman´s first album Naked and undone is full of touching lyrics and dancable rythms. This cd doesn´t need to put to certain category, because you can hear well made music from country, blues, folk, rock and even funky on same cd. Freeman is talented musician and songwriter who should get to know by bigger grouds. Denise´s voice is soft, deep and rickyleejones-like:) I would like to see her on the stage in an intimate consert place, where she could sing her songs and tell her stories and absolutely acoustic! The cd is well and proffessionally produced and surely worth of every dollar!!! My favourite is ballad, Freedom´s calling! In the lyrics there´s everything you need to know about life. This music works especially on monday mornigs. It makes you smile and give a lot of energy for your week! You´ll dance to your work!

  • Think Madonna or Shania Twain. People once said “She can’t sing!”
    author: Deb Ong

Think Madonna or Shania Twain. People once said “She can’t sing!” about either of them. Mention Joss Stone, Missy Higgins, Macy Gray or The Opera Babes and they were virtually unheard of in their respective genres just five years back. Yet hard work, marketing and some added years changed all that. Today we live in an age that’s so commercial and merciless, it therefore means more to watch a flop and call it “reality” than support potentially greats. Sometimes you got to slow down to really hear the music. Hard as it is to find heart in anything, Denise Freeman is one who put her soul literally into this baby. Back home in Malaysia, in a country that cultivates conservatism among other values, Naked And Undone caused quite a stir what with its provocative cover shot and title. Contrary however the contents aren’t even remotely explicit. Anyone who dares delve into it will find it’s good clean fun. The album is about one life – the experiences, choices, twists and turns that led to success… that a small town gal made it this far enough to share it, well, with the world, is some achievement. In every song is a story of loss, love, hope and inspiration. Since Counting Crows there hasn’t been an album to take on the road until now. Favourites such as “Freedom’s Calling”, “Certain Kind of Blue” and “Travelling On Empty” are exactly the ones that’ll leave you feeling abuzz, if not earwormed. These are reminiscent of daily challenges, on a broader scope imparts principles by which to live with memorable lines like "Gotta learn to live right, gotta make choices, got to lay the plan, do the best you can, always… it’s all about learning". For a former teacher, that’s an A+ for effort. It deserves a mention in the local music scene (where self-made artists too often go unnoticed or are least appreciated) because the beautifully arranged tracks and awesome mixes make it essentially an eclectic collection of country, blues, dance, R&B and jazzed up folk. In a word: wow!

  • Cohesive and beatiful recording with many great songs
    author: Simona Bocaneala (Bucharest, ROMANIA)

Naked and Undone is near to me because of songs like Easy, Freedom Calling, What's so wrong about loving you and Naked and undone. Each song that she sings really tells a story about pain, love, neglect and freedom... This is a cohesive beautiful recording without a bad song and many great ones. The lyrics are sensitive and the music lovely. It is obviously a successful starting point for her creation work which shows elegant simplicity and artistic depth. Great CD to listen to while driving or relaxing!
