A little over one year ago I met Adam Falcon at one of my gigs at the sadly now defunct, Danny's.com Cafe in Ossining NY. Danny told me that there was a really heavy guitar player in the audience, using names like Roberta Flack and George Benson. I wasn't paying attention, after all, there are lots of heavy players in New York. Once I heard Adam play - I paid attention! I asked him to get together to share tunes and tea. Each time we did, we would end up playing til past 3AM. A few months later I suggested that we start doing a little gig together up in New Paltz . There, we play for three to four hours, each calling tunes and the other one following. We never formally rehearse and it is really exhilarating every time we play. That is what I wanted to bring to this session.
The Song Writer's Notebook is a collection of sketches, of songs and arrangements by Adam or me. Essentially it is a live recording - a moment in time in a dynamic process of discovery. There is something so exciting about recording a song that is new or one that becomes new with the addition of another player. Make no mistake it is a risky kind of recording. You'll hear us talking and laughing at times. Adam's infectious laugh and his commentary at the end of so many songs became integral to the tracks and was therefore left in the mixes. I called Billy Masters to work on this recording. I worked with Billy before and knew that he could get the guitar sounds we needed in a super stripped down production like this. I brought out some very new tunes that I have never recorded with my band and Adam brought some more songs and a few of his super arrangements. We stretched each other as far as we could, Adam coaxing me to play more and more guitar, while I pushed him to sing more and more with me. I hope it is as enjoyable to listen to, as it was to make and thank you for purchasing this CD.
