Delta Reign is a gulf coast band that is cooking up a unique new sound that fuses traditional bluegrass with western swing rythms, tight vocal harmonies, jam band style instrumentals, stirring in some blues, a dash of jazz, resulting in what some are calling "bluegrass...delta style".
They are a relatively new band from the Mobile river delta and Perdido Key, Florida area that got together in the fall of 2004 for a jam. There was an energy and groove that they had together and instantly, they knew that this was to be a new band. So one week later as hurricane Ivan changed all thier lives, Delta Reign was formed...
The band members of Delta Reign are Benita Murphy on upright bass and most of the lead vocals, her husband Pat Murphy on banjo, lead and harmony vocals, and Norman Jeter on lead guitar and harmony vocals. Each of them bring to the table their own unique background of musical influences that blend together and give Delta Reign that unique sound that is “stretching the boundaries” of traditional bluegrass.
While the band was formed in fall of 2004, it took them about a year to start pursuing their music professionally. Playing mostly local venues, colleges, some live radio programs and a few festivals, the band has been building their repertoire and honing their musical skills. They are now expanding their horizen by traveling and playing more shows and festivals. Having just released their first CD in September 2006, the band is excited about where this still developing sound might take them...so be on the lookout, you'll be hearing more about this "delta bluegrass" band, Delta Reign.

I saw Delta Reign for the first time in Hattiesburg at the Roots Festival, and was very much impressed. Had to leave quickly afterwards, so could not purchase a CD at the time, but ordered it later. On my hour-long commute each day, I've enjoyed the CD nearly as much as the concert. Hope you'll be producing more soon. Stick with that combo bluegrass/swing/gospel sound, I love it. One other thing, I liked your fiddle player at the show. His antics were as entertaining as his excellent musical abilities.

Three's a party- with delta bluegrass!
author: Brook CrowleyNow this is one of my favourites. Benita Murphy, her husband Pat and Norman Jeter on the guitar really have it made. Add Phil Proctor (who guests on mandolin on "Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan?" and you have a real reat throughout. The album has a pair of famous Hank Williams standards and a wild version of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues", which certainly give this album something to behold. But my best favourite has to be "Ready for the Times to get Better", especially Benita's beautiful bowed bass solo. Wether it's blues, bluegrass, or in this case, "Delta Bluegrass", That's Delta Reign!
