notes

Delta Moon -- winner of the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, February 1, 2003 -- formed in the late 1990s when Gina Leigh, Mark Johnson, and Tom Gray all lived within a few blocks of each other in Atlanta's Inman Park neighborhood. The three got together regularly in Mark's livingroom to work up arrangements of classic blues and original songs for two slide guitars and voices. Soon, joined by a rotating cast of percussionists, drummers, and bassists, the band was playing in rib joints, nightclubs, and festivals around Atlanta and neighboring cities. Following the March 2002 release of their debut CD, imaginatively entitled "Delta Moon," Following the March 2002 release of their debut CD, imaginatively entitled "Delta Moon," the band started ranging farther from home, taking their energetic stage show across the US, Canada and Europe. As one audience member said, "Thanks for inviting us to your party!"

Delta Moon's line-up on this recording was Tom Gray on vocals, lap steel, and keyboards, Mark Johnson on bottleneck guitar, Gina Leigh on vocals and hand percussion, Tommy Dean on bass and backing vocals, and Charles Wolfe and Gerry Hanson on drums.

2003: CD of the Year
- Kweevak.com

"Another stellar newcomer to the national music scene ... Delta Moon is poised for greatness, with nothing but a lot of opportunity and a very bright future ahead of them."
- Hittin' the Note

"This is an excellent-sounding album with lots of production punch, soulful performances, and spirited playing. Best of show: a rumble through Fred McDowell's 'Shake 'Em On Down' and Gray's greasy 'House of Dolls.'"
- Blues Revue

"A forehead-slappingly fantastic combo that wipes the floor with most of the competition."
- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"The name says it all: gutbucket Delta-style blues featuring a classy female singer and a pair of funky, slunky slide guitarists who play as one voice."
- The Charlotte Observer

"Two slide guitars speak in tongues and a young woman dances a siren dance."
- Creative Loafing Atlanta

"A perfect example of contemporary Southern roots music at its most affecting."
- All Music Guide

"Delta Moon has tapped into a vein of music that is as old as the hills and as vital as a river."
- Playgrounds Magazine, Columbus, GA

"Delta Moon strikes gold with raw intensity."

Delta Moon's self-titled CD is Southern roots & blues with a little country thrown in for good measure. Anchored by some amazing dual slide guitars from Mark Johnson and Tom Gray and tough & gritty but beautiful vocals from Gina Leigh, Delta Moon electrifies the Delta and sets the blues on fire. Spooky, swampy -- goose-bump music, with a little fun added to the mix. CDBaby's rating system doesn't go high enough... :-) Les

  • extra special, female and male vocals, some of the best I've heard!
    author: Uncle John

This is a fun CD. Keeps toes a tapping and your head swaying side to side. The mix is a real treat cause you get female vocals, male vocals and both singing together. Add to that some excellent guitar play and picking and you get an excellent variety. Love this album. A great asset to my collection, it should be in yours!

A great variety of blues tracks, with an incredibly different version of the classic Wang Dang Doodle that really works.

  • White People Can't Jump--But Some Can Play The Blues!
    author: Jack Gubanc

Delta Moon's music is what I would expect to hear if I wandered into an authentic Mississippi juke joint! The album is very "tight" with great vocals and quality instrumentation. The greatest compliment I can give the group is that they have an authentic Delta blues sound! Buy this CD if you are a fan of southern roots blues!

  • Gravitating !
author: Laura T Lynch of Kweevak.com

Delta Moon is a blend of roots-rock, country, honky-tonk and a heavy dose of the blues. Their music is reminiscent of the 20s and 30s with a completely modern spin. The three core members of the band are supported by a rotating rhythm section, which provides a steady solid beat throughout this eleven-track collection. Duel slide guitars complement each other and give the music a rich bluesy feel. Gina whose voice is soulful, sultry and wonderful shares the vocals with Tom whose style is deep and expressive. The two mingle perfectly together on collaborations such as ‘House of Dolls’, which is also a good example of the impressive guitar interfaces found throughout this CD. ‘Fooling Around’ infused with the blues, demonstrates the synergy and skill of the group. The piano work on this and many of the songs is stellar.

  • Fantastic!

This is an absolutely superior collection. Eleven great songs, superbly arranged and played. The original material like Mansfield Road and You Can't Make Somebody Love You more than hold their own with the cover material, which includes a great cover of Willie Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle. This CD is a must for any serious blues fan!

  • The Real American Idols Revealed!
    author: Sherri Schoenberger

These are what I'm talking about when I refer to American Idols! Real music, real tight, real people, real fun ! This CD makes you wanna shake your body and raise your hands and then wish you were growing up to be just like them !

  • Played it 3 times after opening!

How often do you enjoy every cut on a CD? Very professional and accomplished artists. If only they travelled up the East Coast.

  • Saw them at Rafters on St. Simons, and they blew my mind. Awesome!!!

One minute I was falling asleep in our condo with the in-laws, the next minute my very cool father-in-law asked me to be his designated driver so he could "check out this band" he'd heard about. The two of us snuck out, leaving the women and kids fast asleep, and what a night we had. Cold beer and even better music. I have been around the musical block, and I immediately smelled "professinal" all over these guys (and gal...). The guitarists were tight as hell, and the drummer was all business, totally cool down to the tips of his brand new running shoes that were probably worn more for comfort than for striding out in early morning jogs. You just have to see this band live. As my father-in-law so aptly put it through his jack and coke induced slur, "these fuckers rock..."--and he rarely curses! I am writing this from my home in San Rafael, CA, and I miss being able to see them again. Perhaps they will play our Fourth Street Saloon (free blues every night of the week) once they hit the big time and get out to the left coast. Thanks for the truly memorable experience. Joe P.

  • Amazing
    author: Tani Spielberg

Love the CD, especially Shake 'Em On Down and Wang Dang Doodle. Just as much energy comes through on the CD as in their live performances, which is no small feat. (Hi Dani...)

  • Truly awesome
    author: Dani Johnson

*This* is the reason why it's well worth the time to seek out indie bands instead of blindly accepting the tunes spinning out of the FM band. The mix of songs stirs up a range of emotions - you'll want to get up and dance with Shake 'Em On Down and the sassy Jelly Roll and then lean back, close your eyes, and gently roll your head and sing along to Play Me a Song, Little Blind Boy and You Can't Make Somebody Love You. No doubt you've heard Wang Dang Doodle by a number of artists (Koko Taylor, Howlin' Wolf - even PJ Harvey??). . .this is one of the smokiest versions you'll hear - and you'll want to hear it over and over. The marriage of Tom and Gina's vocals are unrivaled. Truly awesome.

    author: jon larry flowers

Loved it....the range of songs subject matter, lyrics and the instruments playing together, close your eyes and you'd think you were hearing a large black lady with a big voice belting the songs out...high marks! Waited a long time to get my hands on the CD and it was worth the wait.
