notes
With a demo so sparce they didn't even give me the song titles. But I'm so enamored with this band I'm going to play them anyway, whatever it might be called. - Richard Milne, WXRT 93.1 Chicago
Every time I hear The Delafields CD a different musical flourish grabs my attention, accordian, piano, harmonica, lead guitar. This is live roadhouse and honky tonk music with a pop sound in the best sense of the word. If you can't get to see them, take the CD home, crack open a beer and dance around in the kitchen.-- Tom Jackson WLUW 88.7 Chicago
The Delafield's performance schedule the past two years has almost exclusively revolved around a monthly gig at the popular neighborhood bar, Simon's Tavern, at the corner of Foster and Clark in Chicago. It is in this small and smokey venue where The Delafields chose to quietly hone their impressive sounds while building an almost cult like following. With the release of their debut CD, "The Delafields", they make their presence known to the Chicago music scene.
Recorded by popular punk rock producer, Matt Allison, nine original and two traditional songs make up the CD. Sounds of bluegrass, rock, pop and a mysterious hint of Civil War era songs were carefully woven together by Allison's dynamic punk sensibility. The merging of these forms bring a sound all its own that is both accessible and distinctive.
Allison, best known for his production work on all the Alkaline Trio records as well as The Lawrence Arms, Duvall, Sarge, and early Uncle Tupelo says of The Delafields' CD, "This is a great example of how American music should be known. It's one of my favorite records I've recorded and it will be a shame if it's not heard by everyone."

Paul Q. shines as lead vocalist/songwriter - The Delafields Rock the House!
author: Bob and Nina Qutac from OhioGood, foot tappin', fun, Country/Americana music, excellent instrumentation and ballad-like lyrics. Hey, CHICAGO, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are going to want more of The Delafields once this CD gets around! We need to air this on K105 for the tri-state area listeners. Enjoyable as a whole, there is something here for everyone; from our favorites Salina (hidden song), Dog Tired and the Johnny Cash style of I Will Always Be with You to the more subdued St. Fort and downright therapeutic Wait. We're hooked on The Delafields!
An Harmonica Party!
author: Ctrl Alt CountryThe five lords save the most beautiful number till the end as dessert. That is, after all, the hidden bonus track Saulina, a jaunty, elegant alt-country roots-rock number boosted by an extraordinarily vigorous harmonica party. (Translated from the Dutch.)
...well crafted originals, wonderful instrumentation, vocals, and arrangements
author: Clint WeathersOn their eponymous CD, The Delafields say two things right up front that I'm always happy to hear: First, that the heart and soul of country music has vacated Nashville and planted itself firmly in Chicagoland. Secondly, that Americana isn't just American. There is truly wonderful conjunto accordion work from Eddie Torrez that compares well to that of the great Flaco Jimenez, and it gives the CD just a flat-out fun quality. There is also great songwriting from Paul Quaintance and Scott Anderson. This CD throws in obvious influences from all over the American music spectrum, shakes them up, strains them out, and serves up 101 proof authenticity. Along with their well-crafted originals, The Delafields put the torch to two traditionals, "Sitting On Top of the World" and "Lonesome Blues"that will have you singing right along. For purely bonus points this CD definitely gives the impression that this has to be a fun band to see live. That speaks a volume for the production work done by Matt Allison. The sound sparkles and shines with a wonderful balance, giving the listener that sense of being within arm's reach of the stage. With their wonderful instrumentation, vocals, and arrangements, it's almost a shame they didn't include one of the wonderful covers they mention on their website. This CD will definitely go on my iPod for some top-down driving music this spring.
The disc is a masterpiece
author: Jeff Berkwits, Illinois Entertainer...the 12 tunes on The Delafield's eponymous debut are a sheer delight, with tracks like "Lonesome Blues" and "Dog Tired" inventively combining bluegrass with rock, punk, and classic Tin Pan Alley pop. The band crafts brilliant melodies brimming with piano, guitar, harmonica, and banjo that resonate, both lyrially and melodically, long after the album has ended. Presented in a simple, straightforward style, the disc as a whole is, quite simply, a minor masterpiece.
Note-perfect cowboy music
author: Dan Laidman, Punk PlanetThis is sweetly haunting, note-perfect cowboy music. ...The vocalist is blessed with the ideal alt-country voice, a subtle twang that anchors enough understated emotion to fill a hundred miles of wide open prarie. It takes real talent to glide between heartbreak and honky tonk, and these guys do beautifully.
This music is IT
author: JayThese guys' songs really point to the best of the American spirit. While the lyric often portrays situations too much to bear, the music lifts and propells. Even in the fog, the horn guides us.
A busy Americana outfit plays festive Tex-Mex pop with healthy intensity.
author: Mark Guarino, Chicago Daily HeraldPicture Michael Stipe fronting a busy Americana outfit, and you'll get a hazy first impression of the Delafields. Next to its lead singer who sounds a lot like the R.E.M. crooner, this Chicago fivesome is not just another factroy line incarnation fo the Bottle Rockets (the touchstone, it seems, of every band trading their Sketchers for Durangos). One reason why is indie punk producer Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Duvall) who checks the irony at the door, and brings the band's Saturday night aggression front and center. A blues traditional ("Sitting on Top of the World") gets juiced with punk energy and overall, the band plays its festive Tex-Mex pop with healthy intensity.
