notes
"This ensemble has become what it set out to be. It is a first rate group with talented players playing great arrangements. They have their own identifiable sound.....a breath of fresh air in today's music scene."
Jeff Hamilton
"On this recording, an exact mixture of five women and five men, none of whom are household names in the world of jazz recordings, offer a program of vital, mature jazz performance that is striking in its originality and virtuosity."
Gary Foster
The DekaJaz tentet has burst onto the Los Angeles jazz scene with a sound all its own. DekaJaz is co-led by Los Angeles Jazz Society winner saxophonist SCHEILA GONZALEZ, trumpet artist GLENDA SMITH and drummer/arranger MEGAN FOLEY who came together to form this band in the winter of 2000.
The band is comprised of some of the finest players in the Los Angeles area including SHARON HIRATA on tenor, LEE SECARD on baritone, LES BENEDICT on trombone, trumpeter LEE THORNBURG, STEVE GREGORY on guitar, pianist JOSH NELSON and SHERRY LUCHETTE on the bass. This fabulous melding of talent, raw energy and a vast array of musical experiences gives DekaJaz a sound you won't soon forget.
In addition to the players, the band has called upon the writing and arranging talents of Jack Cooper, David Caffey, Rick Lawn, Dan Higgins, Paul McKee, as well as their own Lee Secard, Megan Foley and Josh Nelson. Working with such a diverse group of players and composer/arrangers gives the band its vibrant and exciting sound. DekaJaz comes out swinging hard, brimming with energy and doesn't let up until they've played their last note. They possess a fiery intensity tempered with laid-back cool, as well as a deep commitment to keeping the music alive.

Having heard DekaJaz numerous times, I love having its CD.
author: Georgie B. CooperThe music on this CD is tough, but these young people make it sound easy. The title number, Eclectikos, is marvelous. Meanwhile, Sharon Hirata plays Cooper's The Warmth of Winter with both skill and soul.
