The Deep Roots project features some of Portland, Oregon's finest musicians who, for the fifth year in a row, have teamed up with a group of high school seniors to put out a powerful 22 song CD.
In order to create this compilation, titled "Deep Roots 5," the song writers visited a high school classroom and taught a writing workshop for the students; sharing the tricks of their trade. Then the young writers tried their own hand at lyric writing. Eventually, the musicians took the young writers' words and turned them into these songs.
The students not only wrote the lyrics, they also helped design the CD cover, took photographs, wrote press-releases, maintained an awesome web site (deeproots.com), and put together a sixth annual release concert.
The music is rich with life and integrity, and all proceeds from the CDs' sale are used to pay the project's production costs. Along the way, kids learn that hard work and perseverance pay off, and they also realize that their voices are powerful, and their ideas worthwhile.
It all adds up to make this project one of the coolest around. Wanna help? All you have to do is buy a great CD at bargain price. Enjoy.
