  • Joyful & Optimistic!
    author: Smoothjazz.com Review

How many of us as little girls (and boys) turned a hairbrush into a microphone as we belted out tunes to our audience of stuffed animals? Such was the case for Deena Russo, who mimicked Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and even Frank Sinatra to her own mirror image. She continued to sing as she grew older with her tastes and influences expanding as well…rock & roll and the R&B flavors of artists like Aretha Franklin and Steve Wonder worked their way into her repertoire. With such a wide ranging musical sphere it is no wonder that Russo’s latest project, YOU’RE MY GREATEST MIRACLE, is infused with hints of jazz, pop, rhythm & blues… all delivered with razor-sharp, soulful vocals. Inspired by new love and the birth of her first child (hence the album’s title), it is a joyful, uplifting and optimistic recording from beginning to end. The track “Rio” conjures up an exotic, ardent, amorous encounter with its steamy, sexy Latin groove, Kevin Longden’s luscious guitar lines and a killer piano solo from Ben Armentano. Another favorite tune, “I’m Coming Home” has a deep bluesy feel to it that is ideally suited to the richness of Russo’s voice. YOU’RE MY GREATEST MIRACLE should certainly ensure that Deena Russo no longer has just an audience of one. ~BETH LEWIS
