notes

Portland Oregon's Dearest, Crown is a drummerless quartet that mixes simple melodies & bowed, fretted, and wind instrumentation with electric guitar, bass, and keyboard work. The music wanders from bluegrass and folk balladry to pop somewhat reminiscent of the Verlaines & Neutral Milk Hotel. The words are a significant component of their compositions, dealing at equal levels of earnestness with geomorphologic phenomena, mathematical quandaries, and more conventional lyrical topics.

The band had its origins as a diversion for Todd Steinberg and singer/songwriter Sean Harrasser. Both were members of Harvester, an indie pop four piece. Harvester was quickly signed to Geffen, but the relationship was short lived. Following their major label debut, the four band members moved to 3 different states, yet Harvester would still release three more full length albums and one EP with Northern California's Lather Records and German label Trocadero Records. As Harvester's activity faded, Dearest, Crown became the focus of their songwriting and performance activities. Harvester's Steinberg and Harrasser were joined by Ryan Martin, also a capable singer-songwriter, and cellist Leif Webb. All fours members hail, curiously enough, from the small Northern California community of Redding.

Dearest, Crown began recording their debut CD last June with Larry Crane (another fellow Northern California transplant) at Jackpot! Recording.

Calling to mind favorites such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and the Verlaines, this heartfelt culmination of Americana folk is rather like Chinese food: while it makes the simple delicious and doesn't aim to be glamorous, it's surprisingly filling, yet in less than an hour, you want more! This man knows how to marinate his music in the richness of Americana while expanding the palate through the horizons of folk know-how.

  • music for hungry ears

I did not fall in love with this cd at the first hearing. It was interesting, but unfamiliar, like at a party, where everyone knows everybody else, except you don't know anybody. Subsequent listenings had me falling into the rhythms and patterns of the unique sound. The sixth or seventh time through (I may be a slow learner) my eyes opened and I could see that the sorrows and loneliness are a comfort. These are the songs your soul sings: full of truths about the way our regrets and fears make us human and pull us closer to each other; while being human means constantly looking toward the stars. This is music to dance to in joy, and music for the darkest corners of our nights. If you live in Portland go to the shows, the cd is a pale second to these guys live.

  • Dearest Crown is able to write a convincing love songs via parabolic equations.

When I first heard Sean Harrasser sing --I won't ask what it's like when she's dancing with him/I don't know what it's like to be under his skin,-- my heart sank. Perhaps song of the simplest, yet meaningful lyics. And that is how the whole album is. I am not sure if I can top some of the reviews of the CD that I have read. When listening to the CD it is helpful to have a dictionary nearby. What some consider lexiconic verbosity, I consider honesty. Harrasser writes how he speaks. Educated music for educated people. People often use the term Math Rock to describe certain styles, however, rarely is it applied to lyrical content. This album is more fun than a handful of permutations. Y=X-citing...
