The Daylights: bio

There is a new band in Los Angeles. Unafraid and optimistic, The Daylights are a three-piece demanding attention, whether they mean to or not. Ran Jackson (guitars/piano) and his brother Ricky Jackson (bass/guitars) split time at the mics, while Adam Farley sits content to beat the paint off his drum kit. After just a year in LA, the band is packing out clubs and drawing loyal supporters nationwide. With the release of their first offering, The Shift and Blur EP, The Daylights set a daring tone, being just as much inspired by The Beatles and Led Zeppelin as they are by John Steinbeck, Radiohead or even Frederic Chopin, for that matter. It is music that is vast and cinematic in nature, inevitably becoming a sort of soundtrack to life. The Daylights' trademark: giant melodies that sink in for days. The band recently signed with Daylight/Epic Records and are currently in preparation to record their first full length LP. Expect a national release date sometime in early summer '07.

Appeared at:
New York - Mercury Lounge, Arlene's Grocer
L.A. - The Viper Room, The Troubadour, The Roxy, The Whisky, & Café Largo
Nashville - Exit/In, 12th & Porter, Dancin' in the District, 3rd & Lindsley
Austin - SouthXSouthwest

    author: William L.

Not exactly my cuppa--nonetheless, these lads have definitely got "IT": well-crafted tunes, sparse, yet complete, and the players are extremely tight--a case of the Whole being greater than the total sum of it's parts. These guys deserve the big league & I hope they make it.

  • Shift and Blur
    author: Teresa Henderson

I first saw this group open for OneRepublic in Columbus, Ohio and was blown away by their haunting melodies. Usually the opening bands are a time to go to the bathroom and get snacks, but this band caught my attention and held it. Their powerful ballads, each building on the momentum from the last had me screaming for them by the end of the performance. The band also has excellent stage presence and knows how to work and audience. After their performance I bought their Limited Edition EP, available only at the shows and was mesmerized on the drive home. The next day I was online buying Shift and Blur and singing along. I also met the guys after their performance and they signed my cd. They were really sweet which only made me love them even more. I recommend any lover of good music pick up this cd and try to catch one of their shows to see them live. I can't wait until they come back to Ohio.

  • Really great music is getting even better
    author: Sonny

This is great stuff and it's getting even better. Check out the guys on tour with One Republic this winter and spring! www.lost.eu/721fe

  • Amazing
    author: Jen

You can hear the echoes of U2 in this album, yet the sounds and songs are still fresh and original. I love this album and I only wish that it included more tracks. I can't wait 'till the next release!

  • Makes Me Happy!

    author: James Taleporos

What can I say, there have been alot of new albums out this year, but this c.d manages to rank close to the top. Superb.

  • nice work fellas!
    author: lband rick

dude! we're loving it! can't wait for more!! The band I play with leads worship in our church...we're covering "outsider" for a series about really connecting with people. Good stuff!!

  • I love the outsider.
    author: bernie

I agree with the previous review. I found this song while playing the SIMS 2 and got so frustrated that myspace or youtube does not have this song and I was on the verge of giving up until I came across this site giving me the chance to listen to OUTSIDER!!! Love the song.

  • The Daylights are in more places than you think...
    author: Opal Green

Besides being on Laguna Beach, if anyone owns The Sims 2 University game, you might have noticed that their song, Outsider, plays (with simified lyrics) on the stereos under "College Rock." I fell in love with that song when i first heard it coming out of the little virtual radios in my favorite computer game.... and I've been trying to find out where to get it ever since. Needless to say, I'm very happy right now.

  • Leaves something to hold onto.
    author: jayyy

I adore Outsider, right along with "You know who you are" and "she'll never tell". It's a shame weapons is not included on this cd. It really is amazing. The Daylights deserve loads of support, their music is original, catchy, and music to my ears. amazing doesn't begin to describe how much i love their music.

  • A Superb CD!
    author: Gwen

I've been looking forward to owning The Daylights CD for about 3 months now. I finally found out where I can get it (through MySpace), and I immediately ordered it. With anticipation throughout the next 3 days, I waited for the arrival of my CD. It finally came, and I slipped it into the CD player and proceeded to listen to EVERY SINGLE word, lyric, beat. A-MA-ZING! I canNOT wait for you guys to create more wonderful tunes to feel my ears, and my time. Keep up the good work. God has blessed you! :-)

  • Just buy it!!!!
    author: Tracy M

This is one of the best CD's I've ever bought. Buy it - you won't be disappointed. Outsider's brilliant but it's not the only great song- there are 7 more on here which could all easily hold their own against the likes of Coldplay or Snow Patrol. I can't wait for their next offering. On the basis of Shift and Blur, they deserve to be huge.

  • WOW!! best album I think I've ever bought.
    author: Emily

This is the first time I've bought a CD and loved every song! The songwriting is amazing and you guys sound phenomenal! I can't believe you don't have a record deal already- you will soon though. Good luck and God bless.

  • This CD is a must!
    author: Dan P.

Ok, I'm a sucker for memorable melodies and excellent production. I'm sure Keane and Cold Play fans will love this band.

  • THE DAYLIGHTS ROCK!! THESE ARE KILLER SONGS GUYS!!
    author: Lance McIntire

Genius songrwiting and texturing! This EP leaves me craving more! Favorites include Little Girl, Typical and She'll Never Tell, but Boy on the Moon, Outsiders and If Words Were Bullets round out the spectrum for a killer listening experience in spinning this EP. Take a listen..it is well worth it and it will become a favorite!

  • It only took twenty seconds of play to do a little Shift and Blur
    author: The Canadian

I love this sound. A salute to the early 80's Brit Pop sound with a Beatles influence thrown in. Intelligent writing. (Lennon without the bitter sweet depression maybe? Hmmm...) Twenty seconds into "Outsider" and I wanted to click, "add to cart" right away, but, rather than be impulsive I also gave "Weapons," "You Know Who You Are," and "Boy On The Moon" a listen too. I was sold. Now I really want to catch them live next time I'm down in L.A.....Lovin' The Daylights.

  • Rocks from track to track.
    author: CHINASKI

Musically melodic and rythmically tight - The Daylights have created a palette of sound and lyric that will stand the test of time. Shift and Blur keeps rocking from track to track with a variety of styles that most bands cannot muster. RECOMMENDED.

  • Fabulous!!

  • These guys need to cut their hair
    author: Bryan The Big

The music is phenomenal, but those hairstyles kill me... and what kind of name is Ran? I mean who names themselves in verb form, let alone PAST TENSE verb form... Just kidding - amazing music here worth 3 times what you can get it for here... The Daylights really truly are crafting soundtracks for life. Ricky kisses better. -B

  • This EP is Prozac to my CD player.
    author: Romel Comacho

Without a doubt one of the best CDs I have listened to in a while. As someone who manages a record store, I do have to be up-to-date with everything that’s around and learn how to filter the crap that saturates pop culture today. There are great examples out there where the image of an artist or band over-shadows the actual raw talent of the artist, like Christina Aguilera for example. She is perhaps one of the best artists around today, but because of the way we think as a society, we focus more on image than take the time to actually listen. The first song I heard off "Shift and Blur" was "Outsider" and I instantly fell in love. The Daylights have an amazing ability to mix period’s of music together to come up with a fresh but familiar sounding style of music. From track one to eight you’re given a dose of something new. I know these guys have what it takes to hit it big; however, I can’t help but feel that at times I wish they would remain unknown as to be my little amazing secret.

  • AWESOME SOUND -- soulful, melodic and yet rocks!
    author: Marci

This is now my favorite CD! It is soulful, melodic and yet totally rocks too! I particularly like "If Words Were Bullets" and "She'll Never Tell." "Little Girl" and "Outsider" are totally awesome as well.

  • Catchy, but with depth
    author: J Hancock

Great work. I have been dying to get a CD of some of their songs since I first heard them in Nashville. Outsider is a great opening anthem, and a bit self-descriptive of their journey through the music biz. The unapologetic, yet tempered idealism of If Words Were Bullets, has echoes of U2's Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Boy on the Moon is a cool, dark, lonely night's reflection. Haven't we all been there before? I'm impressed to see the continued hopefullness in songs like Little Girl. Love wants the best for others, wants others to dream big and not be intimidated by life. This song captures that very well. For me, Typical sums up the American dating experience. 'nuff said. As has already been mentioned, She'll Never Tell is ingenious storytelling; building up a tension, that is never resolved, and which explodes in the outro. Brilliant. The sense of longing for something more, not only personally, but for others; to see love completed runs true in You Know Who You Are. All in all, a brilliant first release whose only weakness is brevity. "You're gonna be alright" guys.

  • pretty good
    author: ping

i bought the CD for the song "outsider". the other songs on the CD are alright but the only one that stands out for me is track one "outsider".

  • Finally! These guys are what the LA music scene needs in a big way... real emotion/power/musicality/and a performance that blows your hair back from the first note on... LOVE IT. ... keep an eye out for them -- I would bet that they will be household names before long.

  • play that again
    author: JGoulet

The album rocks, the writing and the sound go together perfectly, i heard this c.d through a friend from california, i cannot believe this band isn't bigger than they are right now, one of the best c.d's, i can listen to it over and over again

  • The Daylight boys are cuties!
    author: Darcy Pier

This CD is amazing! I really like the song called Outsider. I actually found this song from the TV show Laguna Beach. I heard it and i was like Oh my god and i kept listening to it over and over, because i liked it so much. I'm glad I bought the CD it was totally worth buying!

  • Daylights CD is great!!!
    author: Mike Green

The CD was great. There is nothing better than buying a CD because you heard and liked a particular song, but the entire CD has songs on it that are even better. The entire CD has songs that are so different and shows the range of the Daylights. I recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for something fresh and original.

  • Great album, solid catchy tracks
    author: Paul M

Very catchy sound, great vocals and the songs all form a cohesive album. Outsider is a great track that sticks in your mind long after...the guitar sound is very rich. Come tour Canada soon!

  • you know who you are is awesome
    author: ashley gremillion

you know who you are is my absolute favorite song on this cd! but all of the songs are wicked! revolution and outsider are so cool! great beat and everything! they are definately my new favortie band!

  • Ever changing
    author: Nick

The first time I put this disc in, I didn't know what to expect except "Outsider." Then "If Words Were Bullets" came on, and it reminded me of Rufus Wainwright. "Boy on the Moon" was completely different from the first two, and it just keeps on changing. It's almost like a sountrack, and this variety of songs will kill your Cd player with how many times you play it.

  • Great Cd, Great band
    author: Katie

After seeing The Daylights perform Outsider on the Late Late Show, I had to have this CD. Outsider is a great song to open the CD. The only song I didn't like at first was Typical, but it's starting to grow on me. My favorite track has to be She'll never tell. I find it to be intriguingly mysterious. Everytime I listen to this song it makes want to know what this girls secret is. All in all great Cd, great band.

  • THE BEST CD EVER!
    author: Katie

I love this CD and the band itself! Outsider is my favorite song of all time by far! Great job guys!

  • Best CD that I have listened to in a long time!!!
    author: Joemel

This album is very eclectic with great melodies. They don't have a definitive sound which keeps the album from becoming monotonous. They sound like Third Eye Blind, Rooney, Zero 7, Jeff Buckley, or Radiohead in any given song. I can't wait for their next album. Thanks to the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson for giving them some national exposure.

  • Very Impressed!
    author: a friend

I went to school with Adam, the drummer, and I'm very pleased to say "I knew him when." He is such a down-to-earth guy, and I know he's worked hard along with Ran and Ricky to come this far. I'm excited to see where this CD and their music takes them next. I've listened to the CD over and over and have shared it with quite a few people who agree that it's very good music! Best of luck to The Daylights... I think big things are right around the corner. :)

  • Great Sound
    author: J Mars

Heard these guys perform a few times. Finally purchased their CD and am not disappointed. From the first performance to now, they continue to grow and their sound continues to develop. You can tell that they are meant to be performers. They have such passion, great stage presence, and such a real sound. Their lyrics sing about life in a unique way. Can't wait for their next album

  • "Outsider" is brilliant, so what's the rest of the album like?
    author: C. Uchida

The strength of this album is “Outsider”. A brilliant alt-pop tune from start to finish, “Outsider” stands out from the rest of the songs on the album. From those first haunting chords, to the beautiful falsetto vocal in the bridge, “Outsider” deserves the rave reviews this band has gotten on the site. It even got them on the Sims 2: University soundtrack. The E.P. is worth the price based on this track alone.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think the rest of the album only disappoints because of how beautiful “Outsider” is. “If Words Were Bullets” has a great start, and then goes into a strange Beatles-esque rhythm around the 1:10 mark and loses something. “Boy on the Moon” and “She’ll Never Tell” are both very forgettable tracks. At least “She’ll Never Tell” gives us a nice little surprise at the end. “Little Girl” is a nice little pop tune, but nothing extraordinary and “Typical” has some interesting chords during a fairly catchy chorus. “Happy” is a sweet song but “You Know Who You Are” is the best acoustic track and the second best song on the E.P. Without “Outside” this album is very good, but also very ordinary. This is not an insult, there are a lot of terrible indie acts out there. “Outsider” though is something very special. Simply brilliant from start to finish, I still would have bought the CD if it was the only track on the album. It’s pop perfection.

  • This is some gooood stuff. Amazing music.

Whether you are breaking free from being held captive in the trunk of a Lincoln Town Car, hauling firearms across the Valley, or cruising the hood in search of you homees, this is the music that will carry you along--no matter the situation.

  • A work of genius!
    author: Gino Rodrigo

This CD is incredible. I popped it into the CD player as soon as I got it, and sat in a nice comfy chair and let the melodies take over. The genius behind lyrics of songs such as 'If Words Were Bullets' or 'Boy On The Moon' really touch the heart and leave you there thinking for the few seconds it takes for the CD player to move to the next track. Wow. Pure and simple.

  • One of the Greatest CDs ever. Period.
    author: Jennifer Burch

Thrity-four minutes of pure, great music that will have you hooked. Each song is creative and gives a new perspective. A must have CD that'll make you annoy your mailman (or woman) while you wait for it to be delivered. And when you finally get it, you'll want to listen to every song at once because it is that addicting.

  • WOW

  • swoon-worthy
    author: k

these songs are incredible. if sold in pill-form at walgreens over the counter, i would most-likely overdose.... the flow of the cd is perfection; not one song sounds like the previous, or the next. i will preach the gospel of shift and blur until the day i die!!

  • solid, catchy song-writing. lovely melodies and voices.
    author: alison shepard

my friend's roommate knows the drummer somehow, got a hold of the cd, and put 'boy on the moon' on his annual christmas mix cd. my brother, my husband, my producer, and i are in love with that song! so i HAD to buy the album. nice work . . . looking forward to hearing future albums. i'm so glad i heard about you guys--thank god for collin and his xmas mix cds:)

    author: sassystrand

I really can't stop listening to this disc. I've shared it with many, and everyone loves it. The passion that these guys are filled with, spills out into their tunes & lyrics. This disc contains beauty, variety, and lots of fun. They put on a good show too.

  • cant stop listening, its addicting
    author: Jennifer Avila

Although it's just 8 songs, its one of those cd's where ALL the songs are good, so it's definetly worth the buy, I still can't make my mind of which song is the best, so far none of them had hit the skip button. I love this CD, thank you Daylights :D

  • ***Welcome These Ousiders Into Your CD Collection***
    author: L-Boogie Kinlaw

Shift & Blur is cruising under the radar right now but soars above just about everything else that was released this year. The first cut "Outsider" acknowledges and celebrates uniqueness with a great mid-tempo melody complemented by lyrics that liberate. "If Words Were Bullets" is fun & clever. The "Boy On The Moon" will break your heart when he tells his tale backed by beautfully melancholy arrangement and instrumentation. Anyone in love will find the ironic misery that lingers throughout "Happy" all too familiar. Finally, "You Know Who You Are" ends the CD on a hopeful note with great vocals, guitar, and simulated strings. I hope the guys will fill out the last cut with more percussion and maybe a little electric guitar. It would make a great ballad reminiscent of "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Ran, Ricky, Adam & Co. have assembled a musical package of refreshing musical diversity with sincere expression and skillful storytelling. Shift & Blur is in my top 5 CDs released in 2004. The Daylights have a new fan!

  • LOVE THIS CD!!!!
    author: Barrett Justice

I'd first heard "If Words Were Bullets" months ago and I loved it. I waited months to hear more from this band. Their website hadn't been updated in months and I was sure they had something special going on. Then I check their website last week and the EP was released. Best CD I've bought in ages. Every song is great. Pick this album up you won't be dissapointed.

  • You can really feel the heart in this album
    author: Enigma

I've listened to it like 50 times in less than a week from getting it. My favorite song is "Happy." I think I’ve listened to it like 100 times apart from the album. My next favorite is a tie between "Typical" and "She'll Never Tell." You can really feel the heart in this album.

  • Incredible musical trip... A soundtrack of life
    author: Sean Carter

Incredible musical trip... A soundtrack of life... This CD is incredible! Awesome melodic rock tunes like outsider, If words were Bullets, and Typical will catch you immediately. The storytelling and emotion in She'll Never Tell will leave you in wonder. The musical space trip of Boy On The Moon is a song you will want to play over and over on a long lonely late night road trip. Each track will show more of the incredible artistic ability and range of The Daylights. Close your eyes, listen, and almost imagine yourself in situations where these songs could have been your lifes soundtrack. Choosing a favorite track is simply impossible becasue they are all equally incredible. Keep it coming guys and (not that youll need it) but good luck!
