notes

FIREPROOF was made in an old fire-station in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Recorded mostly live to 2" tape with Ray Rizzo on the drums, Jonny Flower on bass, dawn on guitar/vocals, and Adam Lasus at the tape machine. Dawn camped out in the studio alone for a week doing overdubs and tinkering with various electronics, then Gary Maurer came in to mix the record. Bob Hoffnar, Steve Curtis, and Gary Maurer (all members of the band HEM) added beautiful things to the album.

Artist Danica Novgorodoff did all of the drawings and artwork, then Dawn silkscreened and stamped them into the world!

  • Music for dawn, twilight, or any other time
    author: Jason A. Thomas

An intriguing and beautiful album by someone who has already left an incredible mark on the world of 'underground' pop music. Just as original and wonderful as her first, but with less avante-garde music and more of a folk and country sound that seems to show the influence of her native Kentucky. For some, the traditional folk tune "I Don't Need No Man" may come across as some kind of Lesbian anthem, although there is no evidence of this persuasion in Landes herself, and she is seen with men in the videos for the romantic "Twilight" and "Straight Lines." Some songs seem very appropriate in a time of fear and a series of national and international disasters. One is "Bodyguard," with its wonderful personification and description of paranoid household items. Another is the touching "Dig Me a Hole," which expresses a longing to be sheltered from the craziness of the big city after moving from a small town. "Tired of This Life" is a beautiful track that sums up the way I believe many people feel living through the disturbing and often sad years of the early 21st Century. The melancholic "fireworks" passage reminds me of recent 4th of July celebrations during an era when patriotism seems to be forced rather than genuine.

  • Excellent full-length follow-up to "dawn's music".
    author: Bob Kosturko

Fireproof showcases Dawn's growth as a songwriter and vocalist. It's a quantum leap forward from her debut "dawn's music"--which, by the way, I still enjoy. Maybe it's all the touring and recording with Hem that's given Dawn more confidence as a singer. Fireproof finds her in fine vocal form. It feels like heresy to say this, but I think Dawn is a technically better singer than Hem's Sally Ellyson. (Hem-lovers, please don't flame me!)

  • Great CD, happy and relaxing
    author: Hauna

I only recently discovered Dawn Landes from her cover of Young Folks. I quickly searched to find what other music Dawn had available and I ordered Fireproof and Two, Three, Four from CD Baby! I enjoy every song on Fireproof. Of course I have my favorites like Twilight and I Don't Need No Man. But I enjoy listening to this CD over and over. I highly recommend this CD and artist.

so this is a great cd- very beautiful. totally worth it to support a great local artist like her. a few songs are obviously derivative of other artists (not talking about the tom petty cover), but still very enjoyable. could be more raw/free in her singing.

  • a hit, but...did you hear 'dawn's music' too?
    author: audrey

"fireproof" arrived at my doorstep just the other day (from cdbaby.com!!) and I was pleased as punch to hear ms. landes moving in a more produced, more sell-able direction that by no means has any negative connotations in my book. it just means i might see her on tour in my neighborhood in the near future! anyways, after hearing the entire cd I was impressed with the succession of tracks 3 and 4 ('tired of this life' and 'twilight') which are songs mixed with full sounds and complex levels without losing dawn's natural ability to sound like a folk singer without being hokey. dawn always has five stars from me but tracks like "I Don't Need No Man" and a couple others (I'm blanking) stray from the modesty and simplicity that I enjoy so much in her music which is why there are only four this time. but still, nice music and nice two-headed bird.

  • great CD
    author: Steven Weber

My expectations for the CD were high given how much I enjoyed Dawn's first album. I was not disappointed: the songs are well crafted, well played, and all highlight Dawn's unique vocal stylings. The CD is well worth its price.

  • Beautiful
    author: Morgan

This CD has become a favorite in my collection. Three songs on this recording give me chills- Bodyguard, Dig Me a Hole, and I'm In Love With the Night. The rest of the songs are great as well, but those three really thrill me. I saw Dawn open for Hem back in February 2005, and I've loved her music ever since. Thanks, Dawn!

  • Sweet sound For a sweet Girl
    author: Jessica Ramage

Dawns music is amazing. I just got the CD and each time I hear it my emotions are captured, and I can't decide whether to cry or laugh. Its joyful simplicity captures the soul, and leaves you wanting more.

  • This girl kicks butt - gently and not-so-gently!
    author: Debra Scott

This CD blew me away! I've listened to it every day since I received it and continue to find it new and fresh each time. I haven't been this impressed with an artist in many a year. Just listen to the exuberant lyrics of I Don't Need No Man or the aching beauty of You Alone and you'll be hooked for good. Excellent CD, can hardly wait for more from this amazing girl.

  • crunked & sweet idie folk
    author: J. Simone

Dawn's music is all at once sweet, silly, touching, and unique. At times she sounds like a crunked-out Jewel riding a yellow submarine to the center of the earth, and yet during some of her softer songs I'm reminded of Judy Collins.

  • real feelings, artistically driven music thank-you!
