"...jazz fusion has seldom ever been more expressive, more engaging and personable...David Hughes' album is one to be excited about."
-CD baby
"...terrific melodies, funky bass lines, and great horns which take you through an energetic journey"
"...Swoosh is a slam dunk! David Hughes is a name that we all need to remember"
- Bonnie Schendell/Smoothviews.com
"...Hughes delivers funk-laden grooves, guitar-like chordal voicings, and many horn-influenced solos. Although Hughes' virtuostic ability as a bass player is completely apparent throughout this recording, it never obscures the emotionally evocative experience he is attempting to convey to the listener."
"Hughes proves that he is a premier bassist who definitely deserves wider acknowledgment."
-International Institute of Bassists
"...the Crusaders' standard "Always There" was the set's standout, with six-string electric bassist David Hughes bringing guitar sensibilities into the chords as he went beyond providing mere foundation."
-Philadelphia Inquirer
"...His six-string instrument definitely gives him the room to redefine the jazz fusion genre."
-AllaboutJazz
"Millertime shows David in the role of a deserving Marcus-Miller-successor. Very convincing. A top notch bass player."

David Hughes
was born and raised in Sweden but is now based in Los Angeles, California. After studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockolm, Hughes left for LA in 1994 for a stint at the Bass Institute of Technology, BIT. After receiving the BIT Outstanding Student Award, Hughes soon joined the teaching staff and began to explore life as a studio and live musician.
David received his first important break when Wayne Henderson of the legendary Jazz Crusaders asked him to join the band. Other credits include Chaka Khan, Melissa Etheridge, Burt Bacharach and Connie Stevens and Ray Manzarek (the Doors). He has played on countless sessions for TV and radio and for films such as Firehouse Dog and Old School, in which he also appeared.
A composer since he was old enough to reach the piano keys, the release of Hughes debut CD Swoosh united his greatest passions - composing and performing. With the release of Foreign Shores he is reaching for a new musical level, with more complex compositions and live, interactive performances.
Hughes is married to Shirley To, who plays bass, keyboard and percussion in his band. His family lives in Sweden.
Currently Hughes fills his schedule touring and recording with David Benoit, the Jazz Crusaders and Keiko Matsui, and with recording sessions and local performances spanning jazz to rock and classical music. When he has time off, he likes to compose and ride his bike or ski in the SoCal mountains.

Excellent bass-player!
author: joachim brueggmannGreat bass-player! On this album, David Hughes plays the bass like Brian Bromberg did it on the Zebra Recordings. Very groovy bass licks. Important CD for every bass fan!

It won't take many words to entice jazz fans to take a peek into this album. With the bassist from the Jazz Crusaders, featuring special guests David Benoit, Wilton Felder, Greg Mathiesen and Dave Anderson from the Rippingtons, jazz fusion has seldom ever been more expressive, more engaging and personable. And while jazz fusion might not be known for its mainstream appeal, the sophistication of pop influences in "Swoosh" steers it towards accessibility. Influenced by Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller and the Yellowjackets, David Hughes' album is one to be excited about.
Perfect Technician
author: Georg PilgerThis guy is performing a ride through different Jazz-Rock-Stiles that will impress. Everything is really perfect but I miss somethin personal that will seperate this great Bassman from the other Millers, Baileys...
Cold Fusion!
author: Rena SearlesExpressive and exciting licks on this CD. Like a tall iced tea on a hot summer day, this music refreshes the spirit and begs us to linger. Cool, Man!
If you are a fan of the Bass guitar, get this CD. Excellent work!
author: Bruce ArtisIf you like jazz, bass and westcoast music then this is for you.
author: JanDavid produces music that is at the same time rough and funky and gentle and delicate. If you like modern jazz, a strong presence of bass and a westcoast touch then this is definately for you.
A CD that is both funky and melodic with many bass gems.
author: MichelangeloNice melodic tunes that you don't have to be a bass player to appreciate. The featured bass parts blend in well with the arrangements.
Excellent bass work that doesn't overshadow the music.
author: DucktoneSometimes when bass players put out solo projects, the bass guitar tends to be just too much - I just don't think it's meant to be the lead instrument. But on this CD, the music is accessible and smooth with great bass work that's unobtrusive and doesn't override the rest of the fine musicianship on this CD. One of my more enjoyable smooth jazz purchases for sure.
Simply good!
author: Good! good!Did you hear how he took his music to a higher cloud when he teamed with David Beniot. A couple more collaborations with the trend and pace setters will get Hughes far. I challenge him to give this a try on his next CD.
Lovely
author: BeaTh music is smooth and delightful. I don't know any technical terms to use, but the CD has been in the player by my bed ever since it came. It's been great for the wind down and reading before the day is over.
Excellent Bass CD!
author: WilliamGreat Music! I hope to hear more from this bass player!
Swoosh is a real treasury for friends of the bass.
author: Smooth & SoulSince the success of the music group ABBA all listeners know, good music is coming of Sweden. The bass is David Hughes' instrument. So why not call his website swedebass.com. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Hughes has been a Californian since 1994. He got his merits as a member of the jazz crusaders. Now he is back with his debut album "Swoosh", featuring Hughes playing six-string fretted and fretless bass guitars. Read further at http://www.smooth-jazz.de/starportrait/Hughes/Swoosh.htm

I LOVE BASS CDS, AND THIS GUY CAN PUT OUT A CD TOMMORROW , AND I WOULD BUY THAT ALSO.THE TRACK #11 HAS THE ALAIN CARON VIBES, THE NOTES ARE MELODIC, AND SWEET TO THE HEAR. IF YOU HAVE MONEY SPEND IT ON THIS CD, YOU WILL NOT REGRET.
Fantastic Project
author: BALIt would be difficult to call this just a CD .... It is a big big project with some of the finest musicians there is ... David in my opinion is unbelievably great musician and of course BASS Man .... I like all songs and I will certainly listen to the whole CD many many times ... but since the review is my ... I want to say that my favor songs are when David plays melodies and solos on the bass. It describes his style the most. His warm sound and beautiful imaginations are very touching to me. You can hear a lotês of influences and that is GOOD in case of jazz music but I hear his style coming through.
Monster!!!
author: howdyThis is definitely a cd of masterpieces. I can't wait to see this artist becoming another world famous jazz icon. David Hughes made bass guitar a Star!
Great music and really cool bass playing
author: Thomas JohnsonI thought this CD had some really great music on it. I'm a bass player myself and I was very impressed with the melodic playing of David Hughes. It's been my favorite CD to play when I'm driving and especially listening to the last song makes the commute much easier. Great album!
