notes

Dave Tutin is a British-born singer-songwriter who lived for many years in New York.

Raised In Vain is thirteen tracks recorded with some of the finest musicians in that city.

Larry Campbell – after years on the road with Dylan – is here on pedal steel guitar, mandolin, lap steel and violin. Shawn Pelton, described by Dave as "the most musical drummer I've ever worked with". And a host of others including Eric Weissberg. But what brings all these fine players together – superbly produced by Craig Snyder who also adds his eloquent guitar skills – are the songs. A lyricist who in his own words is "like a young man running in an old man's shoes" Dave's songs quickly explain why such a gifted group of players wanted to help record them.

Free with Raised In Vain comes a second, six-track album called Afterthought. With the exception of some deft touches
of piano and cello, this is an acoustic set featuring Dave and Craig. Dave was clearly fooling with us when he left out the space – songs like these only come after thought. Serious thought.

Dave recently left New York for the peace and quiet of the desert outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico where he is hard at work on the follow-up to this award winning album.

In May 2009 Dave was awarded a Gold Medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards for his limited edition collection of poems - or words to that effect - which is available at amazon.com.

  • smooth, dark, melodic, intriguing

Unfortunately, I am out of town and away from my stereo (with CD), but I listened to this twice after receiving it last week. I saw Dave play at Cornelia Street Cafe (nyc) in March, and was really impressed by the band. I hate to sound like a music snob, but I'm a musician myself, and it takes A LOT to get me interested. This CD is stellar. Very melodic, interesting lyrics, many tunes are on the darker end of the spectrum in terms of harmonies. There's a good balance of slower tunes and more upbeat ones. I could list some influences, but it may sound cliche. Let's just say they're all wonderful. Very exciting to hear such quality music these days.

  • infectious melodies, sophisticated lyrics - very impressive

For me, this album so strongly calls up the best of the Beatles ( the evolved Beatles, of Abbey Road, the White Album etc.) - in a couple of ways. First, with melodies that are tuneful, hummable, irresistible, that stay with you after even a single listening, and really burrow into your brain the more you hear them. And second, with sophisticated lyrics that deal with a range of topics - travel, memory, history, Empire - honestly, soulfully, and as well as they deal with love. You really get a sense of Dave Tutin as a man in the world, who has the gift of capturing and expressing that world. And don't get my Beatles analogy wrong. Tutin has a sound entirely his own--distinctive, relaxed, in command of his material. Very impressive.

  • Melodies that stay with you, lyrics with depth. Must buy.

These are the kind of songs that really sneak up on you. At first you're impressed by the craftsmanship of the songwriting and the poetry of the thoughtful, sometimes poignant lyrics. But before you know you know it, you're hooked. The melodies stick in your head and you find you're singing them to yourself all day long. So you go back, listen again, each time making a new discovery and taking something from the CD that you missed before. The more you listen, the greater the rewards. The collection doesn't fit into a specific genre, and that's to its credit. Tutin's a true original. Beautifully produced. Buy it now, thank me later.

  • George would love it.

Tutin's got a voice that reminded me more than once of George Harrison. Combined with some beautiful and tender lyrics, stories about England and some amazing musicianship, the disc is terrific from start to finish. Considering how good it all is, I don't think George would mind the comparison. Highly recommended.

  • Wistful, romantic, melancholy, engaging

This is the type of album that doesn't come around that often. It is a true album in the sense that it is crafted, produced and put together like a single piece of work. While the whole may greater than the sum of the parts, in this case the tender lyrics and artful instrumentation of each song all hold their own too. Purely orignal with hints of Dylan and Leonard Cohen. A beautiful CD! I like the cover artwork too...
