notes

Dave Mullany started playing guitar in 1968 in upstate New York near Woodstock where he grew up watching local musicians like The Band, Paul Butterfield, Bonnie Raitt, Orleans and NRBQ. After a decade of playing in bands, Dave moved to New York City in 1977.

In NYC Dave further developed his musical style playing with members of John Lennon's group "Plastic Ono/Elephant's Memory Band " in the band Rogue. Dave spent the next 12 years playing in the clubs and studios of New York City performing shows with Muddy Waters, Jerry Garcia, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, Bo Diddley, John Belushi, Mike Love of the Beach Boys, and Jorma Kaukonen in venues such as The Palladium, Folk City, the Savoy, The Lone Star Cafe, The Blues Brothers Bar, Roseland Ballroom, CBGB's and Studio 54. As part of Bo Diddley's band, Dave toured New England, including shows at New Haven's infamous "Toad's Place". Rogue was featured in the 1983 movie "Hell's Angels Forever" along with Willie Nelson, Bo Diddley and Jerry Garcia. Dave has recorded with Shawn Colvin as well as with Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller.

In 1991 Dave and his family moved to Portland, Oregon where he began focusing on acoustic guitar and the roots of the blues. Having studied with blues greats John Cephas, Phil Wiggins, Woody Mann, Bob Brozman, Martin Simpson, Dave brings a strong traditional blues style into his original music. In July of 1999, Dave produced and shared the bill in a sold-out show with Woody Mann at Portland's Community Music Center. Additionally, he has performed in numerous Portland events, most notably the Hollywood Theater with Gov. Kitzhaber and St. John's Tavern where he again shared the bill with Woody Mann.

This year, 2002 has seen Dave's CD "Little Wonder" released in February. Debuting to a packed house, the CD has received an enthusiastic response including a FOX TV feature on Dave which aired in February . Fans from as far away as Ireland have purchased the CD. Performing is just one passion of his musical life, Dave also spends time teaching guitar. Since 1985 Dave has worked with hundreds of guitarists on all levels. Dave has joined the staff of International Guitar Seminars, teaching at both NYC and San Diego alongside masters such as Bob Brozman, Woody Mann, John Cephas, John Renbourn, and others.
What the musicians are saying:

John Cephas: "David, you deserve my highest praise. I was so impressed with your playing..., you are ready for the big time....I have full confidence that you can handle any endeavor in the music field"

Bob Brozman "Dave plays and sings with lots of feeling, and is dedicated to his craft. His old National Duolian guitar seems to match exactly his soulful message."

Woody Mann: " Dave brings fresh ideas and a commanding presence to traditional material. He has matured into an artist with an original contemporary voice."

So easy to listen to, and such beautifully written lyrics!

    Sounds good and honest

  • extraordinary musician, one of Northwest's true musical assets
author: Cascade Blues Association "Blues Notes" by Greg Johnson

ned numbers are filled with emotion and he exhibits the often neglected less-is-more attitude of playing that many musicians would learn a great deal from taking the same lead. Acoustic treasure Mary Flower joins him on guitar on three pieces including a nice reading of "Hesitation Blues".. Little Wonder is a pleasing offering if you are looking for the perfect mood-setting on a rainy afternoon. It's relaxing, heart-warming and a nice display of Dave Mullany's talents as a guitarist. If you are a fan of acoustic-styled guitar, Blues or otherwise, Dave Mullany is one of the Northwest's true musical assets. Check him out.
