Dave Golden's first year on the scene had turned a lot of heads:
“Up-and-coming singer/songwriter Dave Golden... an interesting change from the usual... His songs echo John Lee Hooker’s definition of the blues.” (Entertainment Today) “Edgy and poetic Dave Golden has quickly become a favorite... He’s attracted the ‘A’ List to his door.” (Americana Tonight) Golden had been offered a recording deal by Bob Johnston (Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson) and was being courted by several others. He was in New Orleans putting the finishing touches on his debut album, Wake To These Satellites, when disaster struck. The original masters disappeared and in the course of the flooding, the backups were destroyed beyond use.
What survived was a collection of one-takes recorded in the back of a van in the foothills of Austin, Texas. This hauntingly tender collection has just been released by New York's Saing Music as How to Breathe.
How To Breathe is a dark, tough, honest, raw and tender album, unique in its true-grit approach and lyrical complexity. It has drawn comparison to the work of Leonard Cohen, Lloyd Cole and Bruce Springsteen's landmark album, Nebraska. This is a collection of one-takes, recorded and mixed live in the gutted back cavity of an old white tour van. There are no overdubs and there are no effects. In an era when technology and fashion dominate the music world, this is an intimate and honest portrait one American songwriter on a February night, sometime between 12 am and 3 am, somewhere in the foothills of Austin.
It's an odd story that led to the release of How To Breathe, but the end product is quite satisfying. Dave's back to doing what he does best: touring, touring, touring and playing, playing, playing. It reminds me of Leonard Cohen's best songs - just completely dry and naked and stark and straight to the point and gritty and honest and true. If you like Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Tom Waits or other gruff true grit singer-songwriters, I recommend this CD.
