notes

The DKE plays Redneck Disco, which means there's a little funk in our country and a little country in everything we do.

The Dash Kizer Experience (DKE) was formed by Brett Holloway-Reeves and Jim Walker in March 2001. Brett grew up in Topsy, Louisiana on a hog farm. Because he'd lost his right eye, Brett scored a rehab scholarship to McNeese State University, where he majored in English and tried to outdrink the Drama majors (he lost). He began writing poetry at McNeese in 1986 and continued this avocation while working as a journalist and freelance writer.

Brett moved to Austin in 1989, and started graduate school at UT in 1991. He took a Master's Degree in English and became a fixture at the campus radio station, KVRX, where he hosted a variety hour called "The Coffehaus".

Brett's entreé into country music arose from the fuel of all great country songs, i.e., misfortune and shame. In 1994 Brett failed the qualifying exam necessary to pursue his Ph.D. in English. To soothe the pain, his wife Michele bought him a Gibson B-68 flattop. With the guitar and a few gallons of Wild Turkey, Brett was on his way to becoming Dash Kizer.

Jim Walker was working for a factory in north Austin when he met Dash at a party. Jim talked about his days playing bass with Austin country bands in the grand-old-days of the Armadillo, and all the beer he drank at the Austin Outhouse with Lost John Casner and other cosmic cowboys. Brett and Jim talked about jamming some, but Jim's schedule made things difficult-he had to open the heart-valve factory each morning at 4:30, which meant leaving his house at 3:45. Nevertheless, the musician's itch won out and the boys started playing every other Sunday morning from 930 to noon. It was better than David Brinkley.

Thanks to the Sunday jams, Brett's old poetry urge began to produce country songs. He passed the tunes around at Austin parties and back-porch barbeques, attracting attention from musicians and passersby, and the Dash Kizer Experience began to grow some legs. The first incarnation played together in the fall of 2001.

The latest lineup--Brett H-R as Dash Kizer, CC Rios on vocals, Jim Walker and JimmyJoe Natoli on guitars, Bob Mitchell on bass, and Cephas Wozencraft on drums-assembled in September 2002 and began recording at the Twisted Twig studio in Bastrop. This May they released their debut CD, Rise of the White-Trash Superhero on Hackberry Records. The record has been played on KVET, KVRX, and KAOS radio, reviewed in the Austin Chronicle, and circulated far and wide through the growing DKE Internet community.

Here be a brief guide to the sidekicks who make the White-Trash Superhero shine.

*CC Rios supercharges every room she walks into; she's not performing, she's just vibrating and letting you share the benefits. And though she's gorgeous, the best way to enjoy CC is to close your eyes and catch a ride on that voice. CC has begun recording an EP with three of her original tunes.

*JimmyJoe Natoli has made himself a legend as the host of the Westlake Farmer's Market every Saturday morning;yall check him out from 10 to 2 and get some fresh greens while you're there. JimmyJoe is known as Otto by the kids on his AISD schoolbus, and we call him Jesus-with-a-six-string.

*Bob Mitchell is a Cali boy who never grew up, thanks to getting himself to Texas a decade or so ago. Besides making bass a lead instrument, he plays guitar and harmonica, and serves as performer-in-chief designing our vocal harmonies. He's also in charge of the suave rico.

*Cephas Wozencraft is a Texas music veteran and the world's best drummer; he's played with Don Walser, Dale Watson, Chuck Barnes, James Hand, Johnny Gimble, and toured as a member of George Strait's Ace in the Hole band. Wooze tries to pretend he's a cynic, but look at his impish little grin-this boy ain't nothin but love.

DASH KIZER EXPERIENCE, Rise of the White-Trash Superhero

DASH WHO? Sixpiece country-rock outfit that enjoys a good Bob Wills tune, and as you'll learn in the first two minutes or so, are damn proud to be from Texas.
HOWDY, PILGRIM: "King of Texas" begins with this John Wayne sound bite: "'Texas is a woman,' ma used to say. Get a boy raised up to where he's got some size, and there's Texas a-whisperin' in his ear: 'Come on out with me and have some fun.'"
WHO ARE THE 'GHOSTS OF AUSTIN' IN THE SONG OF THE SAME NAME? Dan Del Santo, "Mambo" John Treanor, and Clifford Antone.
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON? All got in big trouble with the authorities for selling copious quantities of the sweet leaf.
CAN A BAND THAT QUOTES 'THE EYES OF TEXAS' ALSO SOUND LIKE THE BEE GEES? According to "Cash Flow," yes they can.
