From the emotional depth of his music to his direct and thought provoking lyrics, Don Dartt "the Artist" utilizes an eclectic range of musical experiences to explore life's deeper meaning. It's a union of sound and spirit that cumulates in a powerful new CD from Dartt Entertainment, "Don Dartt: Born For Paradise". "It's music with a message", says Don "I grew up around a strong gospel music influence and consider it a pleasure to express my experiences and my faith while using the music of my generation."
Don is the eldest son of gospel singer/songwriter Tracy Dartt, author of such gospel classics as "The God On The Mountain", "The Last Sunday" and "Your Blesser Aint Never Been Blessed". "Dad was in several gospel groups during my early childhood" says Don, "in fact he was on stage singing the night I was born, but about the time I turned 8 Dad started a solo ministry and for the next several years our family lived in a 40 foot bus and toured the USA".
Gospel music was his family's life but Don never thought he'd end up writing, recording and performing it himself. "I'm a big music fan" says Don, "but I spent more of my childhood listening to Movie Soundtracks and Symphony Orchestras than I did listening to gospel. I guess gospel music was such a big part of the rest of my life that it just... got in there."
During those years on the road Don began to compose his own music which he played on any piano he could get his hands on. He also became interested in puppetry and quickly became an accomplished ventriloquist, a gift he was able to share with Dad's concert audiences all over the USA. "I had alot of fun writing scripts for my dummy friend Stanley" says Don, "and making people laugh was a great way to make new friends. The primary distraction on the road though was definitely the music. Any given day you would find me watching the road go by with a cassette player in my lap, earphone stuck in one ear and 'Star Wars' music blaring away in monophonic glory... competing only with the engine noise in the other ear."
Don's interest in movies didn't stop with the music though, from early on Don's sights were set on a career in film-making. "The idea of making films consumed me" says Don, "it's like the ultimate Art form in that it incorporates all of the other Arts". Don pursued his interests in Visual Arts at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications and took several courses in Music Theory and History. Upon graduation Don received an award for "Highest Acheivement in Video Production" for his original :30 minute Sci-Fi Comedy, "Through The Vortex". While at Liberty, Don fell in love with fellow Telecomm student Debbie Klittich and the two were married in 1989. The couple spent their first few years of marriage in Virginia where they had two children, Taylor and Rachel.
After L.U. Don spent several years working at TV stations and video production houses which also led him to jobs as a Freelance Music Composer. But in 1997 Don began a part-time ministry that would take him him back on the road. "I put together a program that would include some comedy with my dummy Stanley" says Don, "and I'd do some instrumental piano tunes - some of which I composed myself - but then these lyrics just started coming to me and soon I found myself up on stage singing my songs... I never thought I'd be doing that."
In 1998 Don went full time with his concert ministry and took his wife, Debbie (an accomplished Dramatic Artist) and the two children on the road. Debbie presented original dramatic monologues in the program and together the couple performed around 100 concerts a year. "It's been like a flashback of my childhood" says Don. "We've had some awesome experiences. We've met alot of great people and seen some incredible things. Just in 2001 we visited downtown Seattle, Boston, Washington D.C., Tijuana Mexico, the St. Louis Arch, Niagra Falls and made an emotional visit to Ground Zero in N.Y. City, three weeks after 9/11. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything."
After 5 years on the road as a performing artist Don has finally recorded his first full-length solo project: "Born For Paradise". "I've produced a few projects that contained some of my music," says Don, "including a comedy album with Stanley (Don's wooden sidekick) and a Christmas album, but this is my first all-out record as Don Dartt the 'singer/songwriter'. 'Born For Paradise' is about my faith, my relationship and my position with God" continues Don, "it's about His grace in dealing with me as His child and about me in my human condition trying to figure out my end of the deal".
A close listen to Don's music will clue you in on his interests and influences. "It's all mixed up in there" says Don. "There's a little Country, a little Rock, a little bit of Classical, Pop and Dance, some ethereal overtones and definitely a taste of the big Movie Score - gotta have that! I listen to all kinds of music and I write all kinds of music. Some people want to pidgeon-hole everything and stick you neatly into your category, but I just do my music. I want the song to be what it is and take on a life of it's own."

An Excellent and Inspiring Album from the Heart
author: Scott Till - Co-producer & Vocals For "hemotheory"If music is the key to moving the soul, then "Born for Paradise" is a wonderful example. It's an excellent and inspiring album from the artist's heart and I truly enjoy listening to it over and over again. Another bonus is that the album is produced and engineered excellently and delivers clear and crisp sounds to compliment any audio system.
It stays with me all day long.
author: DmazanecI just like that whole thing, but especially the one called There's a Time. I think Sharon Dartt's lyrics are the best I've heard since the last Jars of Clay album. The combination of her poetry and Don's musical style is quite infectious. The tune stays with me all day long.
sounds good, but not my style.Add some heavy metal and I'll buy it.
