notes

"It gives me renewed hope, when I see the success and happiness that comes from someone introducing something joyful and good into the world."
-MDH, Listener

"I had all these plans for tonight, and now all I can do is sit here and listen to this incredible music... I love this recording..."
-Jenny, listener

"The passion and emotion imbued into the songs could have been dangerous in the hands of a lesser artist... Grant conveys a sharp musicality, drawing the listener in... The tunes follow no particular genre, rather blending jazz, classical, gospel, soul and pop into a lovely blend... the music speak(s) volumes in its presentation, as on the tender, flowing "Balm in Gilead," which would have made Brahms proud... Grant lays his soul bare on this entire disc and comes out better for it."
-Kyle O'Brien, Jazzscene

To Darrell Grant: "I am so taken with it ("Spirit") that I am a little nervous about having loaned it to a friend; if I don't get it back, I may suffer serious withdrawals. Thank you for sharing your heart through this most beautiful work..."
-Christina Patterson, Listener

To Darrell Grant: "I am overwhelmed at the power of your compositions... Your CD has become my New Year's gift to every member of my extended family."
-Bill & Marianne, Listeners

"When you sample a fine wine, the characteristics that matter most are taste, texture, body and bouquet. In jazz piano, I've come to associate those characteristics with Darrell Grant... He can be a minimalist or a heavy hitter on the keyboards, varying his touch to accentuate his interpretation of the melody. Yet it's Grant's arranging and composition skills that add the coup d'grace to this CD, demonstrating to even the casual listener why he is respected by jazz critics as a masterful mood maker."
-Wayne Thompson, Editor of Jazzscene Magazine

"Without even bothering to listen to the MP3 files I just ordered ("Spirit"). What a wonderful surprise... I am blown away... I have enjoyed it over and over again... It is so beautiful..."
-Elizabeth Ward, Listener

"Darrell Grant presents a varied but holistic program of music on his uplifting CD "Spirit", which evokes the naked and unabashed, unpretentious call of the human heart..."
-Michael Brewin, jazz guitarist and author

To Darrell Grant: "...my deepest appreciation and most sincere thanks to you for heartfelt music, beautifully conceived utterly free of bull..."
-Steven Cantor, Oregon Public Broadcasting

"The SPIRIT remains strong in Darrell Grant's sensitive touch and ability to truly inhabit the spirit of whatever music he applies his abundant skills to." - Willard Jenkins, JazzTimes, BET on Jazz

Pasted above the keyboard on Darrell Grant's piano is a wrinkled post-it note containing two words-"Show yourself. " "These words are a daily reminder to me. To search deeply for what matters, and to believe in the power of communication." The words have lead Grant on a path from pianist with jazz legends and in-demand New York sideman; to critically acclaimed band leader and composer, to respected educator and singular solo artist. They are manifestly expressed in his new CD Spirit. Reflective, heart-felt, and personal, Spirit marks the moment when influences, experiences and inspiration come together to create work that is, as Duke Ellington says, "beyond category."

"I wanted to return to the place before I knew what music was called, when it was pure emotion and spirit. These are songs that move me at that deepest place. They are songs that make me cry. My goal was to approach them honestly and simply, without artifice or heed to genres." - Darrell Grant

Drawing deeply from a wellspring of influences that include classical, gospel, jazz, pop, folk, and new age, Spirit seamlessly shifts and blends musical styles, held together by the common threads of intimacy and emotional directness. It is music from the heart to the soul.

Spirit's ten solo piano pieces spotlight the gifted piano artistry which took Darrell's four previous albums to the top of the jazz charts. The CD also features the vocal talents of Grammy-winning Nashville vocalist Lari White, and showcases for the first time Darrell's estimable talents as a songwriter and vocalist.

Portion of proceeds from the sale of Spirit CD's will benefit CM2: Children's Museum
