Holiday Jam is a bouncy and bright holiday offering. Jazz saxman Alan Darcy leads the charge with a fine ensemble bringing fresh interpretations to seasonal favorites and offering up a Darcy original, too. For the most part, these are smooth instrumentals with a lively edge; on two tracks, Darcy lends his own hip vocals (This Christmas and the original One More Christmas Song) with backing vocal support. For the bulk of the disc, though, Darcy wisely lets his saxophone do the talking, and the conversation is smokin' good.
The jazz styles vary from song to song, and the diversity lifts the entire presentation. I particularly enjoyed the New Orleans vibe to Silver Bells; the rhythms had me bouncing and beaming like an idiot. Interestingly, Darcy includes an easy listening/smooth jazz interpretation of Elton John's Can You Feel the Love Tonight (including some light harmonies by Leah and Kim Franca), and this immediately brought to mind (for me, anyway) "The Lion King," not Christmas, although the song's sentiment certainly has a lovely fit with the holidays. The old-style, bluesy Auld Lang Syne closes the album with just the right edge.
Nicely done, Alan Darcy & company. Your Holiday Jam makes me want to break out some freshly baked bread for a deliciously jazzy midnight snack. Bon appetit!
