"Family Dance" is the follow up to the acclaimed "Rocket Ship Beach" CD from Dan Zanes on the Festival Five label. This is the sound of friends getting together with electric and acoustic guitars, fiddles, tubas, accordions, harmonicas, tambourines, drums, banjos, mandolins, and voices, to sing and play traditional and original songs.

Family dance is a natural blend of folk, rock and roll, fiddle tunes, a capella hip hop, and dancehall- musical traditions of one sort or another updated for the 21st century in the relaxed and soulful style that made "Rocket Ship Beach" so popular with families around the world.

Special guests include Rosanne Cash, Barbara Brousal, Loudon Wainwright III, Sandra Bernhard, Rankin' Don a.k.a. Father Goose, The Sandy Girls, Donald Saaf, and The Rubi Theatre Company.

    My 2 year old daughter loves this CD. We heard Jump Up on Sesame Street and had to find the CD. This is such a great mix of music we never get tired of listening to it over and over and over!

    My 11 month old son and I saw Dan and his friends on the Disney channel doing Malti and we fell in love with the whole video! The song warms your heart and makes you want to sing, dance and learn Spanish! (My husband is Cuban and he is fluent, I know some but we will be teaching the baby so this music is perfect!!) Then we started seeing other videos from him and had to order the CD. This is the best CD! We listen to it constantly and we love it! We are ordering all his music!! Thanks Dan!

    I must add my voice to the chorus of people who recommend this album as one that is great for both kids and adults (and the same can be said for other Dan Zanes albums). And it's not just that you will be happy to listen along with the kids - I often will listen to some Dan Zanes songs while driving alone in the car. On this album, some of the outstanding tracks include Malti, Wonderwheel, and Water for the Elephants.

    This cd is superfun. The folk songs are great, and the original songs Dan does are great. The other singers are great too, and not just as backup. So nice and ecclectic. A great alternative to sort of bland options in the child-geared music dept.

    I agree with all the other reviewers who say that "Family Dance" is a hip, soulful alternative to so much of the yucky music produced for kids. Some of my favorites like "Jump Up" and "Skip to My Lou" get play on this dad's iPod even when the kids aren't around :-) All I can add to this long list of positive reviews is that the CD comes packaged in a little board book that is fun to look at when you're not dancing around. I end up storing the CD in a separate sleeve because I don't think the book does a very good job of protecting the disc, but I found the colorfully illustrated book to be a very nice surprise.

    I got this CD for my son after seeing the artists on Noggin, and it surpassed my expectations. I was in an incurable good mood for several days once we started listening to it in the car. Oh, yeah- our 3-year old son loves it, too! It's very happy and fun without being saccharine, with bluegrass/folk-rock, latin, and world music flavors.

    My 17 month old knows the sign for "more" and he LOVES 'All Around the Kitchen', he smacks his hands together so hard I think he might hurt himself! He spins, bounces and says "doodle doodle doo". We have to listen to it at least 4 times in a row before he lets me move on to the other great songs!     I always love Dan Zsnes. I just bought this (And all the rest) for my Son's daycare. They danced around in purple and green paint to it the other day. In the depths of fvery cold VT lst winter we danced around my living room to it after dinner--we never got tired of the music, although we couldn't keep up with the 3 year old.

    Like "Night Owl" this album is a wonderful experience for kids and adults. Great harmonies, arrangements and a good range of musical styles to keep you and the little ones happy. Good for singing alongs too! Buy it!

    This music really opens both adult and children's eyes and ears to music that they just won't get form other sources. The songs are lively and interactive, leaving almost no one sitting still through the album. We're going to go to a live show when Dan Zanes and friends come to town (Hey, that's TODAY!) As a grandparent, I had to get two copies: one for me and one for my grandson.

    I am so relieved to find children's music that isn't sappy or nauseating!!! My three and six year-olds are already beginning to sing along and I can play this music all day long for my own enjoyment as well. I just wish the CD came with the words to all of the songs.

    Our 2 year old daughter's favorite Dan Zanes cd. She esp. loves singing "All Around the Kitchen" and is constantly pulling out the cd to play. It's a great mix of upbeat and slower paced songs. A Dan Zanes cd is the perfect gift for new parents.

    Family Dance (like Zane's first disc) is the antidote to the slickly-produced children's music that only encourages passive listening. Although this is a great production, from the recording quality to Donald Saaf's fantastic illustrations, it doesn't sound out of reach. Dance along! Sing! Play! This album is worth the price if only for the essential observation by Rankin' Don, "There is no Hokey without Pokey."

    As a kindergarten teacher and parent of young children, I've listened to my fair share of "hokey" kid's music and believe me this guy is far from hokey! I love his funky style and the dance-ability of his tunes... very catchy and charming... Dan's voice is reminiscent of Lyle Lovett's and the spirit of both his CDs is light-heartedly appealing to people of all ages! What an uplifting gift to the world!

    We were introduced to the group at the Diller-Quaile benefit in NYC, at which you appeared. Picked up the CDs and, since then, while in the car, we listen to nothing else! From the back seat, my son, age 3, will cry out "Hokey Pokey, Number 4" (it's on track 4). In fact, he loves the whole CD, but Hokey Pokey is clearly the favorite, followed by the "elephant song." He puts the beat on his knee, and shakes his head, and sings all the songs. It's wonderful! My husband and I love the songs as well (I even play it when my son is not in the car). Can't wait for the third album.
