notes
The music of the Dan Stein Group represents a maturing and synthesis of composer/keyboardist Dan Stein's early musical influences: 20th-century Western classical music; urban music of the 70's such as Earth, Wind, and Fire and George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic bands; early jazz/rock pioneers Weather Report, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock; and the feel-good grooves of soul-jazz greats such as Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, and the Meters.
Combining rhythmic concepts drawn from funk and soul with extended harmonic concepts derived from the modern classical lexicon as well as George Russell's revolutionary harmonic theories, the Dan Stein Group creates music which is entertaining and accessible, yet at times challenging and thought-provoking; a potent, boundary-defying blend.
Dan Stein has performed with a wide range of artists including the hip-hop group Primordial Source; blues diva Dan Fuchs; rock songwriter and former Mommyheads singer Adam Elk; avant-garde improvisers Invisible Maniac; and the Jazz Composers Alliance big band. He has written and produced music for fiction and documentary films, original dance productions, and multimedia installations. He has a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Geri Allen, Ran Blake, Paul Bley, Jimmy Giuffre, Cecil McBee, and George Russell.

author: !Earshot - L. PoundsThis 8-track recording from the Brooklyn-based Dan Stein Group is an impressive collection of contemporary ... jazz ditties which stand up to repeated listenings. Dan Stein ... and his Group serve up a generous helping of groove-oriented cuts which trip and dance all over the musical spectrum. There are hints and blends of jazz, funk, soul, urban, R&B and rock all over this recording and every track is served up in a challenging and boundary-defining style that in no way alienates the listener, but instead invites the listener to jam along to loose feeling and fun interplay that emanates from this disc. ... Mr. Stein is an accomplished and educated performer/composer who has played all over the world ... and studied with jazz “heavies” like Paul Bley and compositional “heavies” like the noted 20th century composer George Russell. Russell’s harmonic theories have no doubt left a lasting impression on Stein because one of the bright spots on “There Goes the Neighbourhood” is that every song seems memorable and catchy after only having listened to it a couple of times. ... Stein enlists a stellar backing band ... and delivers a varied enough pallette of music to keep your jazz-ass shakin’ for hours on end.
