Cyril Lance first heard Muddy Waters as a kid growing up in Honolulu, Hawai'i - an event set him on the path directly to his latest recording "Stranger in My House" 25 years later. Cyril has played guitar professionally in many different genres soaking up the vibes of rock, blues, jazz, reggae, latin jazz, folk, celtic. But since that first time hearing Muddy, the intensity of the blues has always stuck with him and been his anchor.
Cyril has played all over the country and in Europe most recently finishing a three-year stint with zydeco blues harmonic player Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos in the late '90s. A child of the 60's and 70's, he fell in love with the great jamming bands: Allman Brothers, Traffic, Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana... His musical journey led him to explore jazz and art-music and he studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts while playing in the northeast in the '80s.
In the mid-'90s, Cyril moved down to the piedmont of North Carolina, an area rich in the tradition of blues and American roots music. There he reconnected with his love of this music and started incorporating it into his writing and touring as well as honing his skills on slide guitar and lapsteel.
Stranger In My House, his latest album, incorporates all these diverse influences and combines it with honest, thoughtful writing and intense, spontaneous recordings that capture the soul and intensity of blues, R&B, swing, acid-rock, new orleans funk, latin jazz. This album features the incredible singing of Grammy-nominee Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes), jamming Hammond B3 and piano playing by Matt Jenson (Ronnie Earle, Johnny Adams, Mighty Sam McClain), and Cyril's road-mates Chris Carroll and Kelly Pace playing bass and drums - one of the finest rhythm sections in the south (Bob Margolin, Skeeter Brandon, Paul Osher, Pinetop Perkins, Rev. Billy C. Wurtz, Detroit Jr...).
This album rocks, it cries, it grooves, and it moves. Classic jam blues!!!
author: JohnI sit here listening to the CD version of Hot Tamale Baby. As fantastic as it is, it does not compare to hearing it live (Jack of the Wood, Asheville NC, 11/17/2007). Without the usual studio constraints, Cyril opens up and lets it wail. So why buy the CD if he is so much better live? 'Cause he ain't in my living room 24/7!!!
What a Ride.....

Blues The Right Way
author: Big MikeThere are a lot of bands that say they play the blues. A lot of them lie. However, with Cyril what you get is a true blues experience. This cd serves as an amazing reminder that blues when done right is the most amazing music in the world. I recomend this cd to every blues fan and every one curious about the blues. Cyril and company easily hold their own against any blues band out there today. Definitely check out "I Went Down", "Just Not Ready" and "Light Of This World". Those tracks alone would be worth the price. Yet, you get seven more great tracks that will find their way into your daily rotation as well.
Turn up the volume for great blues
author: Kjartan AlbrigtsenI purchased the CD at CD Baby, and from the samples on the web, I really looked forward to receive the CD. It did not disappoint me at all. Imagine this scenario: You are at a club with your buddys, hanging out for a couple of beers. The chat between you and your friends is loud. The nights artists goes on stage, and you wonder if you should go someplace else, where you can talk in peace and quite. After Cyril Lance pulls off "It's a stranger in my house", you decide not to leave, but to do the talking some other day.... This CD really requires to be played loud.
Great music for the rockin blues man!
author: Thomas DavisI picked up this CD at a show they did at the Temple Ball Gallery in Chapel Hill. It is a fine CD from first to last. My favorite song by far is #2 "I Went Down" and my wifes is #8 "When I first Met You". You will not be disapointed. It is a great CD! This is the first review I ever wrote, so let that tell you how highly I think of it.
GREAT ROCKIN' BLUES!!

I also had the opportunity to see Cyril & the band at Blue Bayou Club on Friday, 7/25. He & his band are even better LIVE!! But I truly cannot say enough good things about the CD.. BUY IT, If you love BLUES, you'll Love this CD!
this is the way blues should be heading
author: mike gibsoni'm a music fanatic from way back and have just lately been introduced to the new blues scene. i'm lucky to have a local blues radio show 1 night a week. i heard hot tamale baby and couldnt wait to find a copy. this cd excedded all my expectations. i cant tell enough music fans/friends about it. i love it from front to back and look forward to seeing cyril live as soon as he comes to nc. the fusion of great guitar hooks and keys is as fresh as anything i've heard in 2 years. dont waste time. buy this cd and enjoy.

this album is a great example of what a very good blues band can sound like. All members ride the groove of Cyril's fantastic guitar playing. Having seen these guys in concert and not knowing what to expect I was greatly suprised and look forward to seing them live again.
Heart and Soul sharing a bottle with the Blues....

It's as if somebody in charge told Cyril Lance he had one album, one shot, to show all of his strongest influence and greatest strengths. Cyril was certainly up to the challenge, assembling a excellent band lead by the incomparable talents of Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers, Blue Floyd). Cyril and his band manage nicely to create a sonic fury required for driving blues-rockers like "I Want the Real Thing" and "Hot Tamale Baby" and still exercise the reserve required for the more intimate moments like the title track "Stranger In My House" and the beautiful instrumental "Remembering Jon" honoring Cyril's late brother (the album is dedicated to the memory of both his brother and father). This album is steeped in blues. In addition to the cover of Reverend Gary Davis' "Light of the World", complete with a quite enjoyable Zydeco-esque arrangement, Cyril and the band give us their take on Willie Dixon's "Same Thing" which although worn out by practically everybody still sounds fresh under the careful supervision of Lance. If that weren't enough to satisfy your "blues tooth" the track "Just Not Ready" features a slide intro that turned the ground under my feet into mud right before my eyes. This is my first suggestion for a Handy Award this year, and the best advise I can give you on the next CD you should buy.mao@spinjunkies.com
