Spiky, orphan, urchins inheritors of 60s pop, clash with the aural, textures and waves of the avant guard and country music.

notes

Performing and writing for the Cultural References is an outlet for expression of protest against the corporate controlled state.

This is the guise of activism we feel most comfortable with.

Elizabeth and I started performing our songs in various Canberra venues about the middle of 05.

There is too much despair and apathy promoted by our corporate overlords in the form of a negative ‘reality media - advertising, shock jocks and big brother that is of such little artistic merit that we feel compelled to create our own media thrills.

I thought the name Cultural References would give us more scope in a performing identity and an excuse for dressing up whilst performing. Chameleon like.

We were joined in May 06 by our good friend Vandy Meyer. We now ply our wares as a trio – Bass, Cabassa and Guitar.

In November 06 I took time off work to record 13 songs for this CD “Personally Bubblewrapped “ . We wanted to present a better than demo product so we looked for someone with music production accreditation to achieve this outcome. We settled on Marciano Telese because he had an intriguing name which we struggled to pronounce properly – usually the hallmark of artistic allumuni ; Rachmarinov, Yehudi Menuin ,Uri Geller or Apu Nahasapeemapetilons.

We are very pleased with the outcome of our collaboration with Marciano and it is comforting to align ourselves with someone as twisted and crazy as ourselves.

We will perform anywhere anytime – Venezulean Embassy, Moruya riverside festival, folk festivals, Demonstrations, Fruitmarkets, Shopping centres, alleyways, abandoned buildings and anywhere near a café.
