notes

Cubanoson is a traditional Cuban dance orchestra as created by pianist, Leonel “Papo” Ortega. This musically inspired pianist and composer has enjoyed the privilege of working alongside several exceptional musicians, among them, Roberto Rodriguez, Chico Alvarez, Junior Rivera, Jose Fajardo and Candido Camero. Cubanoson unites the “Punto Cubano” and the “Son Montuno” bringing danceable Cuban music to any event, (public or private), concert or festival. The purpose of this orchestra is to unite the talent and dedication of excellent contemporary musicians, (true exponents of our roots), to offer and express our traditional Cuban music to all cultural venues. Cubanoson honors the great artists who have bestowed upon us the utmost musical education. To them and others who have passed on our music through generations, we will continue honoring them with New York’s Cuban dance orchestra, Cubanoson!

This compilation consists of 10 selections of old style traditional Cuban music. It includes 3 compositions by composer and friend Silvio Cebrian, (Monsieur Jose, En la Campiña and No Te Preocupes.) (Side note) Monsieur Jose is a great tune with a new arrangement in which I added some French lyrics and coros, for our European and Canadian friends, and as a special treat, singer Ronnie Baro added his unmistakable voice and French verbiage to introduce this song.

The compilation additionally includes new arrangements of Lagrimas Negras, composed by Miguel Matamoros, Que Mala Suerte, by Arsenio Rodriguez, and Mujeres de Mayari composed by Francisco Repilado known as Compay Segundo to the music world.

The last 4 songs are all original compositions. Son Bailadores, composed by singer and friend, Mario J. Ortiz, music by Papo, resulted in the creation of an old-style guaguanco. Two other songs, Guajiro Soy, a guajira, and the title track Recordando a Cuba, that tribute the 6 original Cuban provinces, were co-written by me and my uncle Sergio Sori. Lastly, Son Cubanoson is a son montuno written by me to introduce the Cubanoson orchestra to the world.

Thank you and enjoy Recordando a Cuba.

  • Dance Floor Hit
    author: DJ Michael Peters

The proof that authentic Son in a modern interpretation can be a mega sucess on the Salsa dance floors was presented by, for example Cubanoson, they had a huge dance floor hit in 2006 with Recordando A Cuba."

  • Beautiful

From Sofia, Bulgaria - I really hope to see the band live one day. You can't even imagine how your music makes life beautiful.

  • Solid !

Cubanoson "Recordando A Cuba: Papo Ortega Presents Cubanoson" (Cubanoson Productions, 2006) - A solid, self-released set of traditionally oriented salsa/son from a New York City-based ensemble, led by pianist Leonel "Papo" Ortega... This disc doesn't go places we haven't been before, but it's good stuff... Live or on record, this is a band that can get your booty shaking and your feet slippin' around!

  • Bella qualita !
    author: Roberto Rabbi

Segnalo Monsieur Josè‚ composizone cantata in lingua francese.

  • Excellent insistent piano and rousing chorus!
    author: DJ Bongohead (Pablo Yglesias)

Lest we forget the Afro-Cuban origins of what we refer to today as salsa, the next jam comes from Cubanoson, a play on words that means both that Cuban son is what they play and that the are (son) Cuban! ‘Recordando A Cuba’ (from their debut album of the same name) means “remembering Cuba,’ and its lyrics, like a lot of expatriate songs, are full of memories of a land that lives on in the hearts of its displaced people. The insistent piano and the rousing chorus at the top of the track recalls the classic Punto Guajiro form, but then the several well-placed sharp brass and percussion ‘hits’ serve to dramatize and ‘wake up’ the dancer. The boogaloo feeling is left behind as the songs careens along in a straight funky salsa groove for the remainder, pumping up the crowds wherever it is heard. The tres guitar and high-pitched trumpet indicate that you are dancing to traditional Cuban music, but the high-quality sound engineering, toughness of the groove, vocal styling of the coro and powerful constant cowbell cry out: New York!

  • Dancer's delight !
    author: DJ Jeff

Papo Ortega presents: Cubanoson is the hottest surprise released this year. It is definitely worth picking up. This album is sure to be a dancer’s delight. The tile track “Recordando A Cuba” along with “Cubanoson”, “Que Mala Suete”, Guajiro Soy” and “Son Bailadores” has the power to draw you to the dance floor. Papo Ortega should be proud of this excellent project.

  • Cuban Music Lives!
    author: Ed Castaneda

Last Saturday it was my pleasure to hear Papo Ortega's CubanoSon perform live at the Westgate Lounge, a popular Latin music and dance club in Westchester, New York, that features the best Latin bands including the best of the new. CubanoSon performed songs from their new CD Recordando a Cuba. This new recording brings a fresh interpretation to a highly danceable style of music known as the “Son”. The Son originated in Cuba in the early part of the 1900’s and was popularized by orchestras like Arsenio Rodríguez y Su Conjunto, La Orquesta Aragon, Sonora Matanzera and José Fajardo y Su Orquesta. This musical style spread like wild fire throughout the world and gave birth to El Son Montuno, and along with El Punto Cubano, is the origins of what we now know as Salsa and Charanga. Here is proof of the Son’s powerful influence on Latin music today. Take a wonderfully fresh and modern musical journey through the heart, soul and rhythms of Cuba. Bravo CubanoSon!

  • Altamente Recomendado
    author: LaConga.org

  • Absolute Spitzenklasse
author: DJ Michael "El Rumbero" Peters

Unbedarfte mögen da gleich an Buena Vista denken. So klingt Kuba!

    author: DJ Thomas Saltho

  • Editor's Pick - A very special acquisition.
author: BP Editor of Descarga. com

Nice! An unexpected, all embracing, son-salsa release in the style of the best classic SAR recordings. In fact, most of the arrangements here are done by Manolo Albo, one of the originators (Along with Roberto Torres and Sergio Bofil) of the SAR dynasty. The brainchild of pianist-singer Leonel "Papo" Ortega, Cubanoson sports deep rich tres driven grooves (Junior Rivera) fronted by seasoned singers who know what they're doing: Ernest "Chico" Alvarez, another SAR star, and the legendary Ronnie Baro (Africando, SonSublime, Broadway, Barretto etc.) who here revives the classic "Monsieur Jose" — remember that from the recently reissued classic Sonido Solido? "Papo" Ortega can spin a fine, inviting, montuno, and sports a just-right vocal timber to fit right in with his other first-line singers. Cubanoson has all the elements of the best old school dance material, and is earmarked to become a classic. With percussionist Luisito Quintero. bassist Willie Cintron, trumpeter and musical director Roberto Rodríguez and others who help to make this one a very special acquisition. Very Highly Recommended.
