notes

Formerly known as CRYSTAL-PHOENIX, incepted by singer songwriter James Lee Young, and drummer/percussionist Gil Gabaldon, in 1991.

After working for several years sharpening their skills, the guys decided to record their first project. Released in the summer of 2001, a bewildered Crystal-Phoenix is stunned when the CD shoots to number one at KCEL variety radio in California City. north of L.A.

Deejay Charlie Warren attributes their initial radio success to the nostalgic sounds and moods of the songs. "Their influences are from the 60's and 70's. They're incredible! Each song on the CD is as beautiful as the next."

With a sleek blend of folk, pop and hard rock, the CD is Southern California Rock And Roll yesterday, today and tomorrow, with a heavy Native American influence. They are legatees of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, America, Led Zeppelin and others.
Notable note: Jimmy and Gil smashed airplay records at KCEL radio, 106.9fm, California City,California. The CD reached an unprecedented 52 weeks at number 1, and STAYED THERE until the station changed its format to oldies !!! Also in BIGGER news, the band has been nominated for BEST NEW ARTIST/GROUP at the 2002 Fifth Annual Native American Music Awards!!!! The awards were announced nationally, and will take place in Milwaulkee, Wisc., on Sept. 7th,2002. Vote for your favorite group at www.nammys.com.
Daryl Dragon, who worked with the Beach Boys for more than six years, and better known as 'The Captain' half of The Captain and Tennille, writes in a letter to Jimmy, " Tunes were terrific!! Each tune seemed to be well thought out, lyrics meaningful, truthful and from the heart; each tune has it's OWN entity, rather than sounding similar to others on the CD. To me this is hard to accomplish- from most writers, unless they are top notch like you obviously are....Congrats!!"
In fall 2002, Crystal-Phoenix opened for rock superstar Kip Winger on his recent national tour, at the widely popular Paladino's Club in Tarzana, California. They were given a whopping 3 ENCORES!!!Also, they are going to be seen at the same venue soon opening for Native American Music Awards winner Micki Free! Micki was honored in the category for Best Male Artist. The group met Micki at the Nammy's. They are slated to appear on the Dan Smoke Show, in Canada later in winter 2003.There seems to be no end to the group's momentum, as they have been picked up by Radio 98.6 FM in Berlin, Germany, and Belgium's popular, Radio Milo! The group hopes to be in Germany later this year, or early next year.According to DJ Dirk Stursberg, the response to the 3 tracks that were played (the first 3 on the CD, "Apache"), was phenomenal, with most positive feedback on the beautiful vocals Jimmy displays on his songs! The group is currently preparing for their first video, and will begin recording songs for the next CD in March 2003. If you don't have this CD, get it now!!!!Most recently, Jimmy has recorded and released his latest solo project with world famous producer Dennis Dragon. Among other accomplishments, Dennis is noted for winning Grammy's album of the year for his work mixing songs for The Captain and Tennille. The two have collaborated to make this next project a definitive rock and roll album, featuring several talented musician's, including longtime pal Gil Gabaldon II on drums and percussion, solo artist Ricky lewis on lead guitar, and veteran of 60's group "Spirit", keyboardist John Locke!!! Don't miss this next CD!!!

  • Excellent music with a message
    author: Oldcrow

This is music as it should be. Worthwhile, and contains messages for all of us. Usually I don't like rock, but this cd is one of only a few exceptions. Buy it.

  • AWESOME!
    author: Cheyenne (She Wolf)

This CD is nothing short of brilliant. I usually don't like any music that has any type of Christian overtures in it. However, Jimmy Lee has such a calming and soothing voice, and finds a way to combine both worlds that is not ofensive. Apache is amazing. Thank you Jimmy Lee!

  • Bands? Been there, done that. JLY Band is the BEST!
    author: Cheryl V. Sherman

Having had many friends in rock in LA, I was in for the shock of my life! Hearing Apache for the first time was an epiphany! Jimmy's a great writer and has one of the best voices I've ever heard. The album flows and the contrast between different songs reminds me of Queen's, Night at the Opera. Both albums seamlessly segue from theme to theme. In fact, I had an extra copy of Apache and gave it to my friend from Ohio (Cleveland area). Everyone there who's heard it loves it!!!!!!!! Perhaps a new market?
