David "Cab" Callaway and Greg Popp met while attending Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois where they quickly recognized each other's musical talents and formed the band No Cover. After graduation, Cab and Greg lost touch for several years until Cab found Greg's number in an online alumni database. They quickly picked up where they left off and are now a song writing, recording, and producing team able to create songs that stand up to anything being played on the radio. Their influences are as varied as the music they produce, from classic artists such as Neil Young, CSN&Y and the Stones to more contemporary artists like Nickel Back, 3 Doors Down and Puddle of Mudd.
Baseline, their first album, is primarily the collaborative efforts of Cab and Greg. What started as two college buddies getting together to write and record a few songs has become a band that is taking Chicago by surprise. The songs are well written with hooky choruses that pull you in during the first listen. The music has many influences and is difficult to categorize. Their song Crazy World has a Country Rock feel while Heart Attack is forged from an over driven Alternative Rock vibe.
The band's name, Critical Mass, comes from Cab's fascination with cosmology, space, time and the origin of the universe. According to Webster's Dictionary, the definition of Critical Mass is: a size, number, or amount large enough to produce a particular result. The nuclear physics definition is more specific: the minimum amount of a given fissionable material necessary to achieve a self-sustaining chain reaction. Cab and Greg kicked around several ideas and names until Critical Mass became the most logical and natural choice.
