notes

Ever driven across country on Highway 40 as it melts into I-10 and finally blooms as the 101? It begins as a barren, beautiful strip of asphalt, especially in mid-May as school is letting out. Now imagine what the AM radio would sound like if Van Morrison, Michael Stipe and Jeff Tweedy took a road trip from Oklahoma to the Hollywood Hills and fought over what station to listen.

The debut release from Creede Williams features the kind of music you would expect from a twenty-something who grew up on a used car lot, pitched scripts at a Los Angeles Talent agency, and practiced law in Amarillo. Now that he is singing stories from stages across the country, people are finally starting to listen.

The independent debut release from Williams is a great singer/songwriter album littered with insightful lyrics, homespun intimacy and the sly wit you would expect from a mix tape your older sister brought home from college. SOMETHING BORROWED is produced by CARY PIERCE(Jackopierce, Graham Colton Band, Jack Ingram) and features band members from VERTICAL HORIZON, JACKOPIERCE and THICKE.

A classics major with a Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma, Williams came up with a lot of the album while making his way from graduation to his first job in Los Angeles, "I was packing up to make the 21-hour drive out West and started trying to come up with my 'road trip' music. This got me thinking about the irony of how 'road trip' music rarely plays to the highway anymore. So the idea struck me that I would try to devise a way to pick cds that represented the towns and states I would drive through. Of course, it was such a stupid idea that I had to take it to the next level- writing a song at each stop along the way."

Nearly two years ago, Williams took the stage at an open mic and serendipity ensued as a local promoter in the bar booked Creede to play his club based on the strength of one song. Armed with a repertoire of exactly three songs and three weeks to write enough material to play the necessary to get paid, Creede revisited the poems from the "road trip" and SOMETHING BORROWED was born.

When asked about goals, Williams responded, "Ultimately, my goal is to write songs that might actually fit in on that road trip mix tape of my dreams. Music appreciation, for me at least, is born in the car and learns to walk in the living room." SOMETHING BORROWED is a warm introduction to an artist who is defining what is real versus what just feels like it.

  • Watched you on TV last night! You are as funny as your are talented
    author: Jeep-aholic

My Husband and I are hanging out last night with the tv going in the background....and I hear this song that I can't get out of my head. It was during ESPN's show about off-road racing. The next thing we know both of us are on the FLOOR cracking up at your one liners with the host. We immediately ordered your record after only hearing California and looked for bootlegs on the internet. Come to NORTH CAROLINA we say. :) Best album purchase we've made in the last couple of years. When is the second one coming out?

  • You'll FOR SURE turn people on to this CD!!
    author: Alp

Loved it the first time I heard it. Alone With You is way fun and Fallen is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. My girlfriend took my first copy, now I have to buy another.

  • Good programming music
    author: Ashley Bennett Salinas

This CD keeps me energized but doesn't take my mind away from my work. Before I know it the songs have looped through twice and I have finished programming large chunks of my web applications. Thanks Creede for proving that car dealers do produce talented children. Hope you are working on CD #2 :).

  • greatest CD!
    author: Corinne K

I loved this CD! Its rare to find a CD that has more than one or two song on it you like, but man, I have like 7 or 8 favorites on this one! His music is unique and soulful and you can tell he was born with a gift for writing~ Great CD, id recomend it to ANYONE who loves acoustic soul

  • Excellent

Creede can have one of my kids if he wants them. He kicks ass.

  • One of the Texas' new wordsmiths that matter
    author: Tex

Williams concocts musical fruit smoothies for the Starbucks set- tasty, nutritious, naturally sweetened singer/songwriter rock, rich with radio-ready quality and charm

  • Tuneful debut effort from Dallas-based singer-songwriter
    author: M. Tarradell

Music that has that uncluttered pop style buoyed by pure guitars and crystalline harmonies. He sometimes has a folkie undertone, as on plaintive "Alone With You," and a penchant for R&B on the soulful "Fallen." It's an album that gets better with each listen. Part of that credit goes to producer Cary Pierce (Jackopierce, Graham Colton Band), who keeps the disc's sound spacious and airy.

  • Absolutely amazing.
    author: Kendra

Anyone with a decent taste in music can recognize the obvious talent in Creede Williams music. With soulful, honest lyrics and a light sound, it's easy to close your eyes and imagine cruising down the highway at 90 miles per hour on a perfect spring afternoon with your best friend on a road trip across the country. "Something Borrowed" is nothing short of amazing.

  • Emerging artists aren't supposed to be this good.
    author: Mike

Astonishing! Emerging artists just aren’t supposed to be this damn good this soon. Creede Williams is a natural, armed with thoughtful maturity in his songwriting, enthusiasm and humor in his performance, genuineness in his character, and the one thing that can’t be taught regardless of an entertainer’s experience – presence. Blending a contagious love for his art and a humble appreciation for his audience, he personifies the type of entertainer perfectly suited for stardom.

  • Hottie with the goods
    author: Cory from Coronado

Awesome CD! We saw Creede in California and were BLOWN AWAY. Probably one of the funniest, witty performers i've seen. Somewhere between Van Morrison, Michael Stipe and Robert Downey. Yeah, that cool.

  • Great songs
    author: Jen

First, wanted to say I'm *really* enjoying the album (esp. tracks 1, 3 and 9!!). Come to Beantown!

  • I finally bought your cd!
    author: JW

I broke down and bought your cd and have to say it was worth it! Sweet Lord...production/writing/craft were scrumptrulescent!

  • Come to California!
    author: E.Coli

I love it. I wish there were more songs, as it's over too soon. Your sound is like a combination of so many of my favorite artists, so I'm really enjoying it. Come on out to Northern California (insert track 1 comment here), 'cause we'd love to hear you live!

  • Cool voice with a great turn of phrase....
    author: Music Queen

Folksy and upbeat not unlike the new country acts ala Dierks Bentley and Pat Green, but with a bit more grit. Good healthy Americana but doesn’t fall into the traps like Old 97’s did. Produced by Cary Pierce, if that’s any indication.

  • Counting Crow-sy. Sounds like Adam Duritz by way of Texas
    author: Emily

Half the songs I love, half the songs are a little too radio friendly for me. Very Graham Colton sounding style with a better voice. Prolly the best packaging of any cd I've ever seen.

  • Matt Nathanson-y pop rock with a layer of Texas dirt
    author: Mattew

In the vein of the Pat Green if he spent a couple Summers in the Haight Asbury district in NoCal. Folksy, earnest and tight. We tried to get them to play our College festival but couldn't pull it off. If you like Grham Colton, Vertical Horizon, Howie Day,Adam Richman, etc you'll like this.

  • Saw them at SxSw....the record is great, but they are live band
    author: LindseyFromAustin

We randomly stumbled onto Creede and company at SxSw. For a festival noted for it's cutting edge band selection (read loud, indecipherable crap)it was like a dream to actually watch an energetic group with amazing vocals and looks. Pretty packed out show for a band slagged for being primed for VH1. If this what VH1 plays, get the tv controller because I had no idea what I was missing.

  • Pure genius.....but at first I didn't hear that fact. Amazing Songwriting
    author: Leslie

It took about ten listens to get all of the comparisons out of my head and hear Creede Williams for what and who he is. Creede manages to shine brightly throughout the entire cd. I'm sure there will be plenty of artists borrowing from Creede once they hear this excellent release. It's every bit as good as any CD I've heard. It's not a hard rocking CD...more down the vein of Elton John's "Tumbleweed Connection", The Wallflowers, Wilco,Train,Van Morrison and Dave Matthews. The lyrics are exceptional and are some of the best I've heard. I now find myself singing along with this cd. It's everything a great cd should be. I highly recommend it to anyone who digs high quality Americana rock that never gets sappy or goofy. I hope this album winds up being huge...he deserves it.

  • Comparisons to Michael Stipe/Ben Folds...really more Counting Crows
    author: A.Ellis

The Opener “California” is perhaps the most obvious song to get Williams noticed. The melancholic “Lately (The End)” is another candidate, mixing a Five For Fighting vibe with Williams’s own brand of southern-flavored roots rock to maximum effect. But the outstanding song of this remarkably consistent record is the closer, the Van Morrison-esque “Fallen.” It's the perfect way to end Something Borrowed, proving that the album is most definitely for keeps.

  • A singer/songwriter for the entire nation to enjoy; and one day for the entire w
    author: J-Sin

His voice reminds of Athens, GA favorites R.E.M. at times while the backing strums of his guitar is roots-rock fusion as its very best. His songs have a varied degree of traveling lonesome in a convertible taking in all the beautiful landscape that our vast country has to offer. Indeed his goal in songwriting is to produce those songs that “actually fit on that road trip mix tape of my dreams”. I think he can wake up; his dreams are now realized.

  • Acoustic guitar strumming and fun rhythms give it an air of Van
    author: Ray

Morrison's early works like Tupelo Honey. California is a strong song, good cd opening song, with a hint of that Graham Colton sound. I'm sure it's Cary Pierce singing the backup vocals. One of my favorite songs is How Does It Feel: good vocals, good harmonies and a feel good rhythm. A country feeling song is Alone With You. It makes you want to two-step, which I found myself doing countless times. Fallen is my favorite song on the album.

  • Bought the album last week and have given it some serious play since
    author: Mark- Wisconsin

I will have to agree with one of the reviews on your site -it does get better with each listen. Top to bottom a great album with South of Me by far my favorite. It's funny because I don't really have anything like it in my stack of CD's and I think that's what was aimed for.

    author: Kenneth Monez

"Something Borrowed" might as well be a best-selling novel put to music. With a voice reminiscent of James Taylor, & amazing songwriting, it's clear that Creede Williams may emerge as one of this generations greatest storytellers.

  • Songs that resonate, especially with fans of Counting Crows.
    author: Kristen

Imagine all your favorite acoustic rockers in one — that's the essence of Williams, but he has this mature edge that really appeals to the masses (okay, at least me). This is thoughtful music arranged in an alluring way, with melodies that vary in perfect proportions.

I absolutely LOVE this album. We bought an ep at a show a couple of months ago and have been waiting for the album since. Seriously confessional lyrics with a ton of melody- try LATELY(the end) if you wan't your heart ripped out.

  • My favorite, amongst an entire album full of them, is “Lately (The End),” it has
    author: Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck

Williams plays a blues flavored country rock with just enough pop gloss to smooth out the edges. His voice sounded familiar, or should I say borrowed? His heartfelt vocalizations reminded me of the Counting Crows and REM. This is most certainly a compliment in every way.
