notes
Steve Crawford and Spider MacKenzie are a guitar/vocal and harmonica duo hailing from the silver city of Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland, UK.
They have just released independently their highly anticipated debut album - 5am. The album reflects their live sets in a balanced collection of original songs and fresh arrangements of some great tunes from Tom Waits, Prince and Antonio Carlos Jobim among others. The album is receiving lavish praise wherever they’re heard.
Their self-penned songs, as well as their highly original arrangements of artists as diverse as Tom Waits and Prince, are a truly eclectic mix. With influences ranging from blues, jazz, country to soul and reggae they are difficult to pigeon-hole. Past attempts have described them as “a fresh pot of musical gumbo taking in the full spectrum of aural flavour – from country to jazz”, “Sting with a Stetson” and “songs distilled from the essence of the life experience”. think nothing of moving and grooving to their heavily rhythmic, funky acoustica, following that with a soothing ballad that could melt the hearts of the coldest, informing on and updating the rich folk-blues tradition of voice, guitar and harmonica. From a swing arrangement of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues to funky bluesy version of Prince’s Raspberry Beret . The thread that binds this together is the distinctive blend of Spiders harmonica described as sensitive virtuosity by The Sunday Times with Steve's lush vocals and guitar playing, merged to create a unique sound.
