TALES OF NORTHERN CLIMES:
Northampton songwriter Chris Pureka's new CD, ''Driving North,'' arrives with the chill of a retreating winter's last exhale. In its sparseness, her recording seems a woman's updating of Springsteen's ''Nebraska.'' The 11 tightly coiled compositions ride low emotionally, but rock with rhythms of the road. A performer like Pureka gets to see a lot of the road these days, now that she and her guitar are in demand - she has dates next week in Oregon, where she will open for Kris Delmhorst and headline at a women's festival. Tonight, though, she enchants a hometown crowd at the Iron Horse in Northampton, with a 7 p.m. CD release party. (Meg Hutchinson opens; tickets are $13 at the door.)
PUREKA'S PLACES:
''Silo Song,'' on the new CD, uses that farm building as a metaphor for the place people shovel secrets, storing away hurts that need air and sunshine. ''3 A.M.'' extends a plaintive, late-night plea for reconnection with a missing friend. The title track ''Driving North,'' which closes her disc, charts a course away from the fortress of someone's disregard. The best company, on Pureka's dispiriting ride, is the artist's ability to draw a personal voice from the strings of her guitar, a talent best displayed on the instrumental ''Reprieve.'' Pureka's singing voice is like homespun fabric that, when she lets emotion rise, becomes flocked with gold. Even when her songs dip into depression, the love lifted from Pureka's frets is as bright as high beams.

Thank you for raw, soulful music. I can listen on repeat and get lost in another world.

  • Absolutely Fantastic
    author: Chipmunk

I grew up listening to folk music but I never knew folk could be *THIS GOOD*! I was first introduced to Pureka at a live show. I knew nothing about her but simply watching her walk on stage and say "hi" was captivating. I was then impressed at how intently I was listening to these songs I had never heard before. Her stunning guitar work, crafty lyrics, both thoughtful and raw, and a voice that always sounded new, led me to buy ALL of her albums immediately after her set. At home, I ordered more copies to share with friends. I've been living off Chris Pureka's albums for two months now, eagerly awaiting her next show (four months to go!). The only thing I can recommend more than this album (and her others) is to catch her real charm at a performance!!

  • Best CDs I've gotten all year
    author: Elizabeth Cumpton

I just bought all of Chris Pureka's CD's, and I play them every day. It's a rare thing to find albums that I can just listen to all the way through, enjoying each song just as much as the last, and it seems like every time I play them, they get better. And, she's hot. :-)

  • A-mazing!

  • This music is great
    author: Kristen

I'm so happy I bought this CD, I liked it instantly. The music is raw and heartfelt (do I sound like a real music critic?? hehehe) I almost cried when I first heard Burning Bridges. Great CD, I'll be getting more of her stuff.

this cd amazed me. Not ashamed to say this is my 2nd copy I wore out the 1st one.

  • Amazing!
    author: Rachel

What an awesome CD. Chris has an amazing voice. I love the cd and listen to it all the time!

  • Haunting...
    author: Tina

I have been listening to this CD nonstop for the last weeks after a friend of mine gave me a copy of it. The copy got replaced by the original (I had to have it!) recently as well as Chris new CD Dryland which is equally brilliant. I just hope Chris will cross America's border soon so we'll be able to see her in Germany next year!

  • One word. Awesome.
    author: Mindy Acosta

This album was awesome. I got it two or so weeks ago. Usually I will listen to a new purchase 5 or 6 times and then have to stop before I get sick of listening to it. I’ve had this CD on repeat in my car since I bought it. There are no songs that I don’t like. The instrumental track was a welcomed surprise. Chris Pureka’s guitar playing is solid and beautiful and it is backed up with a voice full of emotion. I have recommended this CD to numerous people and will continue to do so.

  • author: Linda

I love this CD. Chris is so poetic...so emotional. The songs are beautifully written and her voice is mesmerizing.

  • Life-altering. No, I'm not exaggerating.
    author: Dylan

I'm one of those college kids that listens to anything and everything and has enough music to listen for a year straight and not hear the same song twice. I LOVE my music and it defines much of my life. I've had this album for about a year, and I've probably listened to it weekly or more since then. I'm here at CDBaby reordering it because I left my disc at home for my parents when I moved, and I still have a copy on my computer. I'm considering a 16-hour round trip drive to see Chris live because unlike last year, she won't be playing near me. Yes, it is that good.

  • Absolutely Amazing Album
    author: Luke MacNeil

This is an amazing album. Masterfully written and played. My girlfriend hasn't taken it out of the car for 3 months. I used to have the mcdonalds jingle stuck in my head.... you know 'Ba dat ba ba baaaaa ... I'm lovin it' .. but now its more like 'We sang porch songs... we were rock stars...' Its infultrating my life. I'm glad that I picked this up, its one of the best albums I own. - www.lukemacneil.com

    author: Vicki

Holy heck this album blew me away. I kept hearing snippets in my friends car and finally she loaned me her copy - phewww! It has been on the cd player at work non-stop, my co-worker is begining to be annoyed with me and it is all Chris Pureka's fault for putting out such a fantastic album. Can't wait to see you in Portland in November!!!

  • author: Geana

Every song on this album came at a perfect time in my life - every feeling I have that I can't explain just comes so freely out of this music. It's been in my cd player for weeks - definately my best music purchase yet.

  • Life Manual
    author: Alicia

If you've ever had things you wanted to say, but just couldn't put it together right, get this album. The stories she tells are real and true. It's all the stuff I'd say if I could sing with such a powerful voice, or play guitar impeccably, or write poetry to music. This album rocks.

  • I GIVE MY MAN FIVE STARS

    author: Lorianna

Saw Chris down in Quincy, Florida. Bounced my bank account buying her CD. I listen to it everyday. Such a sexy Voice w/Flawless Guitar Rifts! There is a song for Everyone on this album, possibly 11 of them!

  • smoky and smokin'
    author: Becca

"Cynical" is a true anthem (and my myspace profile song). This album is one of the greatest I have heard from an artist that I had never heard of. I'm so glad I took a chance, because I found a real gem here. Her voice is soulful, her lyrics are fluid and real. This one is a must-have.

  • better than cats. real cats.
    author: jennymiller.com

Man, I love this record. So instead of stealing it, I bought four of them. I strongly suggest you do the same. Give one to your ex (it made her cry), one to your sister (she wonders how she lived without it), one to your stepmom (because she rules), and one to yourself (because you're worth it).

  • simply amazing... so incredibly talented

  • The brightest new star on the horizon...
    author: Joyce Chappell

After catching a short video clip of a live Chris Pureka performance on either Free Speech TV or Link TV, I ordered "Driving North". As I placed my order, I found myself hoping that at least half of the CD would be worth my money (having been burned many times in the past). What a wonderful surprise to find that each and every song on "Driving North" is absolutely superb. Chris' talents are unmistakable and I'll be the first in line for her next CD. Chris Pureka is truly the brightest new star on the horizon of women's music!

  • So amazing
    author: Mindy

This cd is unbelievable. It's so very honest and touching. The songwriting is true & relative to anyone. Chris' voice is haunting and unlike any other. I've never been so moved by anyone's music before. "Driving North" is incredible.

  • one better than great
    author: Lisa

I caught chris on her current tour when she stopped into a little cafe here in Milwaukee. Her lyrics kept running through my head after the set. It's been in my car for the past week and everyone who gets in the passenger seat asks the same question after the first few minutes, "This is great! Who is this???" You gotta get it.

  • FINALLY!!!
    author: Anji (tee_n_ess18@hotmail.com)

First heard "Porch Songs" thanks to the Alix Olson DVD I bought last week. Then Chris appeared on the dvd herself helping little alix out on her poem "Checking My Pulse".....needless to say, I immediately checked her out. My sister bought the CD on here and we listened to it together, and I borrowed it for the night. We just sat there like "this is good.....this is really good." For awhile now we've been looking for an artist other than melissa ferrick and ani difranco to listen to....but with the same type of music....and FINALLY we found someone else's music to enjoy. And I do agree with the other reviews on this page....the lyrics are incredible and definitely make the cd what they are. Chris's voice is so moving, i always listen to this cd, no matter what i'm doing. Can't wait to check out her first cd. If it's anything like Driving North, I know I'll instantly love it. Everyone that hasn't already....BUY THIS CD!!!

  • Incredible lyrics and Instrumentals - Buy this CD!!!
    author: Michelle (Kennebunk, Maine)

I absolutely love this cd. I was introduced to it on a weekend visit to a friend's, and when I got home I just HAD to buy it online from CD Baby. This CD is a combination great lyrics and fabulous music reminiscent of Melissa Etheridge and other great female singers. I listen to this one over and over and over and over....I will be buying two CD's when this one has worn out: one will be another copy of Driving North and the second will be her self-titled CD.

  • just buy it

Ran into this artist by chance performing at a club and was inspired enough to seek out the cd. Not easily impressed but this is great. A vocal blend as if Stevie Nicks and the Indigo Girls had made a baby, with super harmonies, and that distinctive inspired indie feel.

  • Played it on repeat for 5 days in a row. I never do this...EVER!
    author: PhillyQueenie

Seriously amazing. Cant wait to get her first cd now. If you're contemplating buying this, just do it. you won't regret it.

  • author: Mateus

Good stuff. Great CD everyone should go out and buy it now. The lyrics and beat of the songs blend so perfectly. This is a must have CD for any music lovers.

  • author: Melanie

This cd is totally a crowd pleaser. Driving North is definately one Cd that you will never get bored of. Every track is new, refreshing, and heart felt. You are missing out if you don't purchase her cd Driving North.

  • Great CD!!!
    author: mdietert

Driving North is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time. I would definately recommend this CD to those who like folk but who want something different and refreshing.

  • Hands off!!
    author: Kate

I bought this CD a week ago and I haven't stopped playing it! It's fantastic...I have to keep a watchful eye on friends with similiar musical tastes...because everyone wants to "borrow it". I know how that goes. No more guessing games, I know what to get everyone for any special occasion--their very own copy! I just wish CHRIS would play somewhere in WESTERN NEW YORK-- Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, or something because she's gaining quite the following out here!!!: )

  • Perfect!!
    author: Ellen in Victoria, BC

Amazing...awesome...remarkable...I only wish I could think of better descriptive words to relay how excellent DRIVING NORTH is. Its' sincere emotion has kept it in permanent rotation on my player. I suppose I would judge how good a cd is-by how often I skip over tracks...and there isn't a single song I would skip on this one.

  • Amazing
    author: Matt Morrow

This is one of the best CD's I own. A beautiful look at the dark side of life and love. Chris Pureka is up there with Bruce Springsteen and Patty Griffin. She says so much with so few words and her voice and guitar playing are phenomenal. It's been a long time since I recommended a CD so strongly, but you really need this.

  • FLAWLESS
    author: M.

One of the best five CD's I own. DO NOT pass this one up.

  • amazing
    author: Nicole

This CD is amazing. It does a daily rotation from my house to my car to my headphones and back again. I can't stop listening. It is raw bleeding honesty that you hear and feel when listening to this music.

  • haven't taken it off repeat since it arrived in the mail
    author: cake

you know when got a bit emotional trauma happening in your life or when youv'e feel like you've smoothed out the edges a bit... well, to me this is when you step out of your solitude and invite 'driving north' to join the silence barracading your mind.

  • Beautiful
    author: Sharon

After listening to many people on various web sites and message boards rave about Chris Pureka I decided to buy the CD and listen for myself. What a beautiful CD to listen to. Her emotions come clearly through on each song and her voice has a rich and smokiness to it. She surprises you by reaching out to different ranges and then reels you into a warm embrace with a soothing softness. Reprieve is a fabulous track and shows her guitar skills which I think are stunning. This was a fabulous find for me and I'm definitely hooked!

  • so much awesome
    author: alicia

This CD is one of my absolute favorites. I've had it for over 3 months, and hardly a day has gone by that I haven't listened to at least part of "Driving North," if not the entire album. There is so much to recommend this CD. Chris Pureka's voice, lyrics, and musicianship are stunning - at times haunting, at other points hopeful, yet always compelling. She has a sound comparable to many stellar performers that is captured completely by no one else. I highly recommend this CD! Buy it for yourself and your friends!

  • she's got a great voice full of raw emotion
    author: allie oxen-free

Driving North is one of the best cds in my collection and I just can't get over Chris' voice. She's really got a talent for weaving together stories in her songs and backs it up by solid guitar playing. Each song is hearty enough that you can listen to it over and over. Try this cd and you won't be able to put it down. (yup, she's really cute!)

  • Absolutely Fabulous !!!
    author: Stefanie

2 words: Porch Songs. Chris is an AMAZINGLY talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. Her words become your own ("Burning Bridges"). Her music is visceral and gritty ("Cynical")and it is because of those qualities that you fall in love with her music. (Not to mention her "knee" dance !) Buy the cd, throw in in your car, and just drive !

  • a songwriter's songerwriter
    author: IndieFocus.com

Her choice of instrumentation and lyrical lines that accompany her acoustic strumming are a masterpiece. Her lyrics speak of honesty and intelligence while her guitar technique is right on the money. Blend it all together along with the pure smoky voice of jazz clubs and bars and you've got it. Standouts include the instrumental "Reprieve" and the haunting rhythmic declaration of “Cynical.”

  • superstar
    author: Amelia Borofsky

Better than molly shannon, better than wonderman, its a bird, its a plane, its....chris pureka! Amazing CD that I listen to for five hours at a time on repeat while cleaning the house, driving north, driving south, eating dinner, talking with friends, bike riding, running, anything. I LOVE this cd and the lyrics are perceptive and real. Everyone in Hawaii is listening to her, and whatever Hawaii does, the rest of the country follows...

  • Outstanding new voice provokes passions
    author: ALW

Driving North is one of the more exciting new albums i've heard this year. Crisp fingers on the guitar, honey lyricism, and a brave voice charmed me into listening to the CD on repeat for several days. Solid through and through. (Plus, Chris is cute.)

  • I fell in love with Chris' "Driving North" !
    author: Yumiko

I simply fell in love with Chris' "Driving North"! My friend was playing this CD when we were at her house and just grabbed my attention! I ordered 2 right when I got home!!

  • A voice like Jack Daniels flowing from a cello
    author: Birgit

On this album Chris Pureka has opened the tap and let her soul seep out through her fingertips and drip into her guitar strings; fusing sinew with string, wood with skin, turning a guitar into something living. Add to that a smokey voice that trembles and quivers and then wraps itself tightly around every note and you are left with a superb aural experience. A voice like Jack Daniels flowing from a cello. Mesmerizing. Driving North, a must have CD. You will listen to it for a long time! Trust me.

  • Let they who have not been heartbroken press stop
    author: AlexWNC

Chris has proven with this cd that she is an artist to be taken seriously. I challenge anyone to listen to this cd and not be moved. Her lyrics capture the experiences we've all had with love and loss with a clarity that defies descrpition. My anticipation for this cd has been satisfied beyond my expectations.

  • absolutely addictive!!
    author: Deb

This cd captured my attention and interest from the beginning. I have not been this affected by a cd in a very long time.

  • OUTSTANDING
    author: JJ Lipton

One of the best new albums of 2004. You need to hear this artist!

  • Exceptional
    author: Collected Sounds

This is a nice collection of well-written songs with interesting melodies and clever lyrics. This is a good choice whether you want it for background music or to really sit (or lay) down with headphones on, the lyrics in hand and really get into it. Stand out songs: You know what? I can't even pick one because they're all equally good. OK, gun to my head, if I had to pick a single…."3AM"…no "Porch Songs"…no, "Cynical"…yes…that one…see, it's hard? But that's my final answer. I think. Just a note: I just lent this CD to a friend at work and by the time she had heard the second song she had already ordered herself a copy. Now she's going crazy waiting for it to show up (I let her borrow mine again so she'll be OK).

Incredible lyrics, amazing voice, beautiful songwritting..all of this wrapped up in an 11 track CD..DO NOT PASS UP THIS CD! You won't be disappointed!

  • What they all said...the cd is amazing!
    author: kd

Chris deals the gift of music that jives me into a cool puddle of sparking molten. Why? Her sheer artistry compressed into each song evokes pensive thought lulled by her words, voice and guitar strumming. But wonderously, those same qualities manage to slap myself into a classic case of rockin'the invisible microphone! I love both cd's that Chris released, but the second wins my best-of-best vote.

  • stops you in your tracks.....
    author: jess

Time stands still when I listen to this album. I absolutely adore Chris's music and this album showcases her talents delightfully. Well worth the long long wait since her first (also wonderful) CD. Buy one for you and one for someone you love!!!

    wow...

  • Amazing CD with songs full of soul and raw emotion
    author: Michelle

I’ve been playing this CD morning, noon, and night since I got it. I can’t ever foresee getting tired of these songs. The melodies are solid, the lyrics are well written and the songs are beautifully performed. It would be so easy to lose oneself in the guitar alone if the lyrics weren’t so amazing in expressing the raw emotions that many feel but could never express. There is no weak point in any song – the musicians and back up harmonies deliver every time. My friends will all get the gift of this CD for the next year of birthdays and holidays. It’s a guaranteed winner.

  • It hasn't left my cd player
    author: Randall

This cd has been played in my apartment nearly every day since I got it on May 6th. Every song has something different to offer for every mood i'm in. "Burning Bridges" especially takes me on an amazing journey (up and and down and through various emotions)every time i hear it. I'm so happy to have more Chris Pureka songs to listen to!

  • These songs are so good, they give me chills.
    author: Lou Ann Bierwert

A great blend of slow and upbeat songs that also have a great blend of backup artists that make it easy to listen this cd over and over without ever getting tired of it. The songs are also so genuine and so well written. I love every one.

  • “Driving North” delivers in every aspect
    author: Desdemona "Bunty" Burgin

I bought Chris Pureka’s new CD “Driving North” 3 weeks ago, and it has not left my CD player, literally. Pureka has been someone that I have always enjoyed seeing live, and when I really love someone’s live performance I often worry when I hear that they are releasing a full studio album. In the past, I’ve found that it can be quite difficult for artists to bottle up the same kind of energy that you get from a live performance into a over produced studio album. “Driving North” however, delivers in every aspect. There is no lack of energy anywhere on this album. The production value is extremely solid, along with all the musicians that appear on it. The lyrics are intelligent, passionate lyrics that everyone can relate to. I truly can not stop listening to this CD, and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • awesome

i bought this cd last weekend after seeing chris play and i have been playing it nearly nonstop since!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! her words perfectly represent feelings and experiences relevant to us all

  • Best record I've heard in years.
    author: Steve

This record is the most solid album I have purchased in at least 10 years. The lyrics are so poignant, thought-provoking and gut-wrenching. Her voice is like nothing I've ever heard: low and rumbling, hitting you in the heart and making you remember that time you broke [insert their name here's] heart--or the time they broke yours. The instrumentation: impecable, the voice: uncanny, the album: worth buying 2--one for the car, one for the house. I haven't taken this out of my ears since I recieved it.

  • buy it. all of you.
    author: Sarah Bolen

This CD is amazing. Chris Pureka is one of the most thorough, attentive songwriters I know, and nowhere is this more obvious than DRIVING NORTH. She squeezed these lyrics from her heart, from the moments where it's all you've got and all you can do it breathe and hold still, guitar in hand like a sieve, capturing only the purest, clearest vision of what it means to love, and to hurt. What impresses me most about these songs, and Chris' music in general, is her ability to select and describe those snapshots of expeience that best convey what she's trying to express. In Burning Bridges, she tells "a story of loaded glances, and leaning in too far". The attention to detail in this song bears more of a resemblence to a Margaret Atwood novel than to anything you're likely to hear on the radio. In Driving North, she laments, "You've been building these walls for a long time. It's not like I didn't know. You flash me another smile as you lay another stone. I still fall for that every time." What I love about this lyric is that it's a genuine attempt at objectivity. What we have is not another singer-songwriter writing about how they've been done wrong, but instead a person who is owning up to the fact that it takes two people to break a heart: one who is breaking it, and one who is letting it be broken. Chris' perceptiveness is a match for Hannibal Lechter, and she's not afraid to point that dissective lens back at herself. I don't care who you are or what kind of music you're into, you should buy this CD. The lyrics alone are worth your $15.
