Cosmonaut
"There is a real grove..." - Music Revue
Two assholes from Lansing (Jamesen's Brian George and Josh Stacey) met another from Grand Rapids (Veronica Speedwell's Rodney Johnson), and schemed about a rock-band; but they didn't have a singer. The aforementioned contacted an asshole from Kalamazoo (Thought Industry's Brent Oberlin). The Michigan quartet named the group Cosmonaut after minutes of heated debate.
Much history occurred prior to this "forming", but has mercifully been omitted for the sake of good meter and reader attention.
What can I say? Rock-bios are boring.
2004 brings "Pipebomb Full of Nails", Cosmonaut's debut release on Ann Arbor's Swollen Lip Records. With song titles like "National Geographic Lovesong" and "The Orient is Red", this pissed-off Indie-rock platter is mmm-good.
Stop reading and listen to the album.

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Brent's angry vocals and lyrics, aggressive music. It's not Thought Industry, but close enough. It's a shame Cosmonaut broke up. For those of you who are complaining about the "telephone" sound of Brent's voice, deal with it. I think it fits the music perfectly.
Fucking Rules!
author: JeremyThis CD is some of the best music I've ever heard period. I give it ten stars, fucking fantastic. I forgot how much I love Brent O. and all his musical endeavors but this made me go back and purchase all the TI stuff on cd. Yeah its short but its sweet as a cosmopolitan and equally as intoxicating. Track 1 and 3 are my favorites today, but they are bound to be dethroned by 2 and 5. Anyone who doesn't appreciate this cd will never be a friend of mine. Pure anger and distrust, I love it! Jeb
Good sounds to these Thought Industry deprived ears!
author: ImthrashsfuThis is not Thought Industry, but if you like that band you will enjoy this disc. Great riffing, classic Oberlin vocals. Overall it's rocking, edgy in spots, with a bit of diversity.
Good one from Oberlin and co.
author: e.d. millerQuality stuff from ex Thought Industry mainman and friends, basically quality Outer Space/Black Umbrella era TI rock. Hope both these guys and TI reform one day, both are bands more folks need to discover. Also, Music Revue needs to run Spellcheck.
Cosmonaut OWNS your BITCH ASS!
author: JobyQuite Frankly I HATE all the belly-aching about Brent's Rat Pedal VOX on this album. All you Namby Pamby Mother Fuckers did nothing but BITCH for ten years about how Brent wasn't "EVIL" enough anymore . . . So what's he do, gets together with his cosmonaut cronies and delivers the single most pissed off record of his carear. I LOVE this record I saw all but Two of Cosmonauts shows and was SUPREMeLY Pissed that they broke up. If this record doesn't make you wanna fuck or fight your fucking DEAD . . .
sweet
author: tom jr (biolich)this album has alot of great qualities and awesome riffs.... but theres something about it that wont add up to much replay value... i love it cuz its brent..
A must have!!
author: AmyLike some of the other fans in the review, I felt that the album was too short. Brent is still in top form and the new band comes together perfectly. My husband has always been a TI follower and through him, I have become quite loyal myself. Pipe Bomb Full Of Nails is a sweet reward for all the waiting we've done for a following to TI's SHORT WAVE ON A COLD DAY!!! Send us more!!!!
Thank God Brett Didn't Disappear With Thought Industry
author: SpencerThis CD is awesome. Musically it sounds like it would have fit quite naturally between Thought Industry's MOD's album and the follow on "Outer Space..." I know the band might not like all the T.I references, but most people probably found them (as I did) trying to figure out what happened to T.I. If you did, then buy this album because Brett is here and is musically and lyrically in great form. Brett's actual vocals are the only minor issue I have with the album, I know that Brett has always used different effects on his vocals, and to good effect, but there are too many effects on the vocals too often this time, its doesn't take away from the album, its just that I know what Brett can do totally unprocessed... Oh by the way, the drummer is pretty damn good too!
MODs era Thought Industry with more pop sensibility
author: Tom MondaThose expecting an extension of Thought Industry's outer space pop classic "Shortwave on a Cold Day" should be pleasantly surprised. This CD reminds me of "MODS carve the pig" era thought industry but more song oriented. There is still some very cool rhythmic interplay and odd metered playing in tunes such as "The Orient is Red." And as always, Brent's lyrics are interesting. Definitely worth it! A lot more aggressive then you would think!
Fuck, yes..Super disc and no lucky punches here. Solid!
author: thomasHard rockin' act with a promising future - provided Brent O. stays put. The nod to TI is clearly present but it's neatly mixed in with Cosmonaut's own lush yet paranoid soundscape. A unique cocktail in every way, which at times sounds like mighty Kong, the now-defunct, genre-bashing outfit from Holland. The drummer plays as if he isn't getting enough attention - tone it down, dude - you're very annoying at times :-/
Nice Piece of Work
author: MikeI'm loving this but sure wish it was longer. I was really disappointed when Thought Industry broke up but this is killer stuff of equal greatness.
more Brent, less "telephone"
author: skiplapwhile eager to hear Brents' voice again, i was slightly dissapointed by the consistancy of the telephone/CB effect used on it...overall, this album will musically satisfy us that long for more T.I. like myself. Dont get me wrong, it rocks hard. Just next time please, let Brents' voice be its own!
Who needs a Martini to get to outer space?
author: carlOnce again I am awed by Mr. Oberlin's musical achievements. I guess I really do not have to mourn the loss of Thought Industry any longer. This disc is as good as Genius Hired Guns, easily.
