notes

Several years ago two Boston-based rock musicians (and moms), Chris Toppin (Fuzzy) and Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses, Breeders), decided they wanted to start a project that would bring together their tremendous music community in order to create the kind of kids' cd that didn’t seem to exist, with a few rare exceptions (Dan Zanes, Ralph’s World etc. - pre "kindie rock" scene).

When Chris and Tanya asked some of their friends to each write and record a song, the immediate response from each of the artists was of great enthusiasm. Chris and Tanya felt that they were going to end up with something quite special but what they ended up with far exceeded their expectations.

Each song seemed to have its own particular style and sparkle, and when all 16 submissions were put together to form one body of work, it became truly magical!

David Minehan’s “Shelter Soulmate”, a touching pop/rock gem of a song that depicts Minnie the kittie’s point of view of how wonderful it is to be found by your "soulmate" family at the animal shelter; Tanya Donelly’s “Laluna the Loon” about a little girl who tries to convince her parents that her midnight trips to the moon are not just a product of her fantastic imagination; Bill Janovitz’s crazy mixed up farm; Chris Toppin’s rocking love song to a ball. These are just a small sampling of the incredibly well crafted songs on this cd that offer kids the kind of sophistication in music that they deserve -- with imaginative topics that interest them, melodies that delight and grab them, and rhythms that get them up on their feet. And because parents will love the music just as much, this cd will definitely be in regular rotation for a long time to come.

  • Great perspectives of new music
    author: International Radio Broadcasting

It's always good to take on new perspectives when it comes to creativity. This band has arrived and has a wonderful way of looking at song creation. A very light hearted approach to making music a part of our lives. Just so enjoyable to listen to and a smille came to my face right away with Shelter soulmate! Good to see someone still has a sense of humour. John David Hart International Radio Broadcasting Hart of the Music

  • ENCORE!!! ENCORE!!! ENCORE!!!
    author: ubertortuga

Barney, the Wiggles, Baby Einstein, etc... All kind of creep me out. This is album is ranks up there with "C is for Cookie" I would be the first in line for the Coochicoo Revue II. This is truly an album for the family.

It's great fun but a little boy-oriented. We love it. This is play music, definitely not for sleepytime.

  • Not just for kids

I bought it for the Tanya Donelly song but I love the whole album. It's a very classy effort and not a disappointing song to be found.

  • Too good for kids.

My child is not even born yet and I am already playing this awesome album in the hope that when he/she grows up it will like proper music. Bill Janovitz' The Farm Where Everyone Does What They Want is great to sing along to - I almost know all the words myself - and Ashby's Funny Face could make anyone smile. Roll on the pregnancy!

  • Received as gift for my 3rd birthday - I love dancing to it.

A great CD, for kids and parents. Accessible but not condescending, with a range of styles represented. Caution: the first track is so beautiful, it might make you cry.
